"THE most extraordinary scenes linked to Saturday's Crabbie's Grand National took place not
on the racecourse but behind closed doors as 39 of the 40 riders staged a mass revolt by
collectively refusing to leave the weighing room to hear the outcome of a stewards' inquiry
into farcical scenes at the start.
All riders with the exception of Brendan Powell, whose mount Battle Group planted himself
at the start, now face being punished by the BHA after not a single jockey obeyed the stewards'
instructions to hear the result of their deliberations.
A BHA spokesman said only one rider or a representative of the weighing room was required to
be present for the reading of the inquiry's findings but none were willing to co-operate.
The case will now be heard at the BHA's London headquarters where a panel will not only make
public the suspensions dished out to the 39 jockeys for their actions at the start but
additionally decide how to deal with their act of rebellion.
The inquiry had been called to determine why all but one of the riders attempted to form a
line before the Grand National's official 4.15 start time had been reached. Minutes later
an official false start was recorded after the tape was broken.
The racecourse inquiry had attempted to investigate whether the riders had lined up before
being invited to do so and subsequently disobeyed the starter's instructions, additionally
putting the safety of one of the starting staff at risk."

I will never forget the image of Starter Keith Brown - with his Mackintosh firmly belted up beneath his arm-pits
  - in Esha Ness's 'National that never was year.It was like something out of a Monty Python sketch - - and showed up officialdom for what it is. Brilliant! The way races are started on the jumps is a joke. So the stewards blame 39 jockeys!!!
Good on the jocks for refusing to cowtow to these useless pr@tts. I hope the suspensions the BHA is threatening results in a jockeys' strike. It's about time someone took on the nincompoops that run the sport. |

So - NOW - after what almost everybody has agreed was an 'acceptable Grand National'....
[b[The BHA are going to bring the race into the Public Eye, again[/b] - - and no doubt the NATIONAL NEWS - when they, presumably, announce that they have both admonished, and Suspended, 39 Grand National Jockeys. JOE PUBLIC - the NATIONAL Newspapers - the BBC, et al - who will, 'LOVE IT' - will ONLY see this in ONE LIGHT..... Yet another SLUR on the GRAND NATIONAL Talk about 'SHOOTING YOURSELF IN THE FOOT'. |

The BHA throwing their weight around for no useful purpose whatsoever. A complete farce.
I wouldn't mind if we had some consistency - but compare to Cheltenham, where they were essentially encouraged to have a running start. |

Funnily enough in a similar stand off 250 miles South in a place called Canary Wharf 39 alleged Journalists would not leave the building after the alleged Editor was told to produce a paper for the punters and not for the sponsors...
There was one alleged Tipster that left the building because he had made a profit... Police have brought in Special Investigators to find out his identity... They may have to bring in those that worked on Operation Yewtree to work out who he was.... |

The GN normally goes off at least 10 mins late these days during which time the odds on nearly all the runners contracts quite noticeably giving a very healthy overround on the SP. Had somebody boobed by getting them down to the start on time this year ?

So the stewards were holding an enquiry into why there was a false start (which I presume they're required to when such an eventuality occurs), they've asked for at least 1 jockey to go to the stewards' room to give the jockeys' version of events, but the jokeys decided to play silly buggers and now we have a 'story'.
I'm not understanding the 'sympathy vote' for the jockeys here. The stewards were their jobs, and we don't know for sure the jokeys were going to be banned! |

thats not what happened George B, the jockeys did attend the first enquiry, but the enquiry was held over until after the amateur race, the jockeys did not like the way the enquiry was going so they all decided not to return to the enquiry.

In attempting to re-convene the Enquiry after the last race, the riders, who had not been given permission to leave the course, refused to attend the Enquiry. The Stewards have referred the matter to the British Horseracing Authority. |

Surely with crowd noise,the jostle of 40 horses etc, it's quite possible that most of the jockeys would not have heard the starter's assistant and would have pushed forward from behind.
And those in front who did couldn't do much about it. It's all very well for the stewards and others to blame them but no jockey is going to deliberately disobey the starter because they know what the outcome will be. |

Isn't the point of the starter having a microphone so that he can give clear instructions to the riders, with such a big field and the crowd noise?
Why exactly do we need anyone standing in front of the horses giving instructions? |

The Start and race are on - But ONLY from the Proper Start. Somewhat annoyingly - The False Start from 2 years ago is on - - along with the Double False Start Void race in 1993. |
