I will never forget the image of Starter Keith Brown - with his Mackintosh firmly belted up beneath his arm-pits
![]() - in Esha Ness's 'National that never was year.It was like something out of a Monty Python sketch - - and showed up officialdom for what it is. Thought we had moved on, a little, from those days .... - But, apparently not. ![]() ----------------- Photo - in this link... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/racing/article-2304222/The-Grand-National-1993-20-years-on.html |

I remember that too onlooker - talk about bringing disrespect to the sport! It was made to look a joke that day.
By:
can't ban them all or can they??
By:
Brilliant! The way races are started on the jumps is a joke. So the stewards blame 39 jockeys!!!
Good on the jocks for refusing to cowtow to these useless pr@tts. I hope the suspensions the BHA is threatening results in a jockeys' strike. It's about time someone took on the nincompoops that run the sport. |

So - NOW - after what almost everybody has agreed was an 'acceptable Grand National'....
[b[The BHA are going to bring the race into the Public Eye, again[/b] - - and no doubt the NATIONAL NEWS - when they, presumably, announce that they have both admonished, and Suspended, 39 Grand National Jockeys. JOE PUBLIC - the NATIONAL Newspapers - the BBC, et al - who will, 'LOVE IT' - will ONLY see this in ONE LIGHT..... Yet another SLUR on the GRAND NATIONAL Talk about 'SHOOTING YOURSELF IN THE FOOT'. |

By:
I wonder if any of the 39 will bottle it and plea bargain...no ban for testifying that AP, RJ, BG were the ring leaders and bullied the rest :o
By:
who is the scab ?
By:
The BHA throwing their weight around for no useful purpose whatsoever. A complete farce.
I wouldn't mind if we had some consistency - but compare to Cheltenham, where they were essentially encouraged to have a running start. |

I thought Powell WAS trying to form a line. Only Battle Group obeyed the starter imo.

Funnily enough in a similar stand off 250 miles South in a place called Canary Wharf 39 alleged Journalists would not leave the building after the alleged Editor was told to produce a paper for the punters and not for the sponsors...
There was one alleged Tipster that left the building because he had made a profit... Police have brought in Special Investigators to find out his identity... They may have to bring in those that worked on Operation Yewtree to work out who he was.... |

The leader of the 39.....AP McCoy
:( |

The GN normally goes off at least 10 mins late these days during which time the odds on nearly all the runners contracts quite noticeably giving a very healthy overround on the SP. Had somebody boobed by getting them down to the start on time this year ?

So the stewards were holding an enquiry into why there was a false start (which I presume they're required to when such an eventuality occurs), they've asked for at least 1 jockey to go to the stewards' room to give the jockeys' version of events, but the jokeys decided to play silly buggers and now we have a 'story'.
I'm not understanding the 'sympathy vote' for the jockeys here. The stewards were their jobs, and we don't know for sure the jokeys were going to be banned! |
By:
*The stewards were doing their jobs

Stewards 1 ; Jockeys 0.
(Riders og) |
By:
George, the jockeys didn't refuse to talk to the stewards, tey refused to go and listen to the stewards' decision.
By:
^is the correct answer.
By:
can u fit 39 in the stewards room
By:
load them into starting stalls for this four and a half mile stayers hurdle
By:
Soz, my mistake, just trying to establish the facts here
![]() But presumably, they didn't know for sure they were going to be banned, so why didn't one of them just go along and find out!? |
By:
thats not what happened George B, the jockeys did attend the first enquiry, but the enquiry was held over until after the amateur race, the jockeys did not like the way the enquiry was going so they all decided not to return to the enquiry.

The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Starter that Sam Twiston-Davies, the rider of TIDAL BAY (IRE), Mr S Waley-Cohen, the rider of LONG RUN (FR), Andrew Tinkler, the rider of HUNT BALL (IRE), Barry Geraghty, the rider of TRIOLO D’ALENE (FR), Noel Fehily, the rider of ROCKY CREEK (IRE), Brian O’Connell, the rider of QUITO DE LA ROQUE (FR), Mark Walsh, the rider of COLBERT STATION (IRE), Wayne Hutchinson, the rider of WALKON (FR), Richard Johnson, the rider of BALTHAZAR KING (IRE), Jack Doyle, the rider of WAYWARD PRINCE, Ryan Mania, the rider of MR MOONSHINE (IRE), Nick Schofield, the rider of TEAFORTHREE (IRE), Henry Brooke, the rider of ACROSS THE BAY (IRE), A P McCoy, the rider of DOUBLE SEVEN (IRE), A E Lynch, the rider of BUCKERS BRIDGE (IRE), Davy Russell, the rider of LION NA BEARNAI (IRE), Paul Townend, the rider of PRINCE DE BEAUCHENE (FR), Paul Carberry, the rider of MONBEG DUDE (IRE), Peter Buchanan, the rider of BIG SHU (IRE), Brian Harding, the rider of BURTON PORT (IRE), Denis O’Regan, the rider of OUR FATHER (IRE), Jamie Moore, the rider of MOUNTAINOUS (IRE), Aidan Coleman, the rider of THE RAINBOW HUNTER, Brian Hughes, the rider of VINTAGE STAR (IRE), Tom O’Brien, the rider of CHANCE DU ROY (FR), Ryan Mahon, the rider of HAWKES POINT, Wilson Renwick, the rider of KRUZHLININ (GER), Leighton Aspell, the rider of PINEAU DE RE (FR), Michael Byrne, the rider of GOLAN WAY, Richie McLernon, the rider of TWIRLING MAGNET (IRE), Katie Walsh, the rider of VESPER BELL (IRE), Tom Scudamore, the rider of THE PACKAGE, Davy Condon, the rider of RAZ DE MAREE (FR), Jake Greenall, the rider of ROSE OF THE MOON (IRE), David Bass, the rider of SHAKALAKABOOMBOOM (IRE), Paul Moloney, the rider of ALVARADO (IRE), Robert Colgan, the rider of LAST TIME D’ALBAIN (FR), Adam Wedge, the rider of ONE IN A MILAN (IRE) AND Conor O’Farrell, the rider of SWING BILL (FR) had lined up despite being advised by the Assistant Starter, who was positioned in front of the field, that it was not yet race time and then proceeded towards the start.
When these riders moved forward towards the start they knocked down the Assistant Starter, thereby comprising the welfare of an Official. After taking initial evidence from the riders and the Starting Team, the Stewards adjourned the Enquiry to consider the matter. In attempting to re-convene the Enquiry after the last race, the riders, who had not been given permission to leave the course, refused to attend the Enquiry. The Stewards have referred the matter to the British Horseracing Authority. |

So trying to start before the off time and knocking down an official in the process.
Nothing to see here, move along... |
By:
Surely with crowd noise, the jostle of 40 horses etc, it's quite possible that most of the jockeys would not have heard the starter's assistant and would have pushed forward from behind.
And those in front who did couldn't do much about it. It's all very well for the stewards and others to blame them but no jockey is going to deliberately disobey the starter because they know what the outcome will be. |
By:
Remind me - when was this race first run?
By:
surely the assistant starter needs a psychiatric evaluation?! who the hell stands up in front of 40 horses shout and screaming?
By:
Isn't the point of the starter having a microphone so that he can give clear instructions to the riders, with such a big field and the crowd noise?
Why exactly do we need anyone standing in front of the horses giving instructions? |
By:
Oh I see, so they couldn't hear him but thought they'd run him over anyway!?

Btw, has anyone got a link to the televisual evidence of this unfortunate assistant starter having 39 horses charging at him?
