The Anorak - here is your ANSWER ...
---------------- The Alexandra Park meeting, "following Royal Ascot," was, in fact - the second such meeting after Royal Ascot. It was run on WEDNESDAY June 30th * Incidentally, I thought that Ally Pally - moved to Monday evenings - and then Windsor inherited those fixtures - as now. ------------- Somewhat coincidentally - the second race, that Wednesday, was won by a horse called - NEVER NEVER, the Favourite. A horse called NEVER NEVER - has JUST won the last race at Hexham, as the Favourite. ![]() ---------- The Winners that Wednesday evening were ... 2-y-o Seller - WHISTLE TIME - P Rafferty - W O'Gorman - 12 ran -7/2 2ndfav 1m 5f Handicap - NEVER NEVER - W Guest - Sir Gordon Richards(Trainer) - 4 ran - 4/5 Fav 2-y-o Maiden Fillies - HEN-PECKED - Frankie Durr - J Walsh - 6 ran - 6/5 Fav 3 & 4-y-o Maiden - POLYNIA - Lester Piggott - Tommy Gosling - 8 ran - Evens Fav 1m 5f Handicap - ATTRACTIVE - 'Weary' Willie Williamson - Walter Wharton - owned by Major Lionel Holliday - 6 ran - 11/4 2ndfav 1m Handicap - TROMBA - Lester Piggott - Fred Armstrong - 3 ran - 1/10 Fav. ---------- Tote Double - 10 shillings Stake - £6 7s ( 175 winning tickets) Tote TREBLE - 5 shillings Stake - 17 shillings (887 tickets)SP of Tote TREBLE winners ... 4/5 - Evens - 1/10. The "middle leg of the Tote TREBLE," was won by Polynia - who had previously finished 4th in a Folkestone Maiden. The Final leg of the Tote TREBLE being the, "1/10 Fav, who had run at Royal Ascot" - as referred to, by TheAnorak - But the horse was TrOMba - part of Old TOM in THAT name, though - who HAD, indeed, finished, "second in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot."So - well remembered The Anorak. |

Well done onlooker.
He'd have been doing well to pick up the Tote Treble on 26 may. One leg was won by a John Meacock horse, who had form figs of 0/000-00, and started at 33/1. The divi was £2302.10s to a 5s stake. |

Looking at TheAnoraks Tote TREBLE dividend - and 887 winning tickets.
Assuming a Tote 'take-out' of around 25%, in those days - then the Total POOL would have been around £1000. Likewise the Tote Double POOL, too. How much would £1000 equate to nowadays? |
|
By:
About £15000.

£1000 in 1965 would be worth £16391 today

Onlooker,
Thank you very much - you'll be pleased to know that I've completely forgotten all the losers I backed in the 60's and find I have no desire to be reminded of them! My thanks also to everyone else that has contributed - I hope the memories have brightened an otherwise quiet afternoon of racing. |

What was the name of the Meacock horse - was it Zardar-Kuh?.
|

By:
Looking at the Tote pool another way, one thousand pounds was about my fathers salary as a senior civil servant in the Home Office at that time, and I reckon that would now be more like £60k.
Or again, we had moved five years earlier into a three bed semi in North London for which my father paid £2,850. The same house changed hands three years ago for £390,000. So the official change of value based on inflation figures seems to indicate the extent to which government has fiddled the figures over the years. |

Old Tom was a 3yo in 1962, but he didn't run at Ally Pally nor in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot. His runs were 23 April at Newcastle and 18 May at Haydock. Next race was 22 August at York.
Tamerlo was 2nd in the Britannia Stakes and won next time out at Brighton on 2 July followed up by another win at Goodwood on 3 August. They were his only 2 wins of the year. Admirals Lark won at Ally Pally on 26 June he had finished down the field in the Royal Hunt Cup on 20 June. Admirals Lark won the last race on the card at Ally Pally and so would have been part of the tote treble. You are right all three legs of the tote treble went to the favourite. Lucky Harry @ 5/2, Altimeter @ 9/4, and Adimrals Lark was 11/10. There were 194 winning tickets and the tote treble paid £7.11s or £7.55p in decimal coinage. |

Anorak - there is a really good website called "Whats it worth". It allows you to add any amount, a start year and an end year and it will calc current value based on a range of measures. Not sure if house prices are there but it certainly has wages growth and a cost index (rpi or some other price index)

Karkeh Rud – Bay Mare, 1962. The bay mare managed to win three races on the flat, a 2 mile handicap at Brighton as a 3 year old, a 1 mile handicap at Warwick as a 4 yr old, and a 1 mile and half a furlong handicap at Windsor also at 4 yrs old. Karkeh Rud was also placed 11 times on the flat and when tried over hurdles she made the frame once. From a total of 66 races flat and jumps her record stood at 3 wins, 12 places, and 51 unplaced runs. info courtesy of the Apprentice Jockey. There are profiles of the others on there too.. http://theapprenticejockey.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/john-meacock-still-making-us-smile.html |

Memory kicking in now, the jock on TARQOGAN was trying to be cute
and he leaned forward in saddle to judge how much he was heading PRINTER by and forgot about other horses, OLD TOM shot through whilst he was engrossed in finessing, if this is on video then please watch carefully as to how I read the race!!!! I named 3 big races that TARQOGAN would win if taking part and they were the ROYAL HUNT CUP, the big mile handicap at Redcar I think, and THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE, he did not compete in either of the first two but he did compete and win the CAMBRIDGESHIRE and I think he beat PRINTER in that, the mate I told had forgotten about it by the CAMBRIDGESHIRE. |
|
By:
bazzar - he might have beaten Printer in the Cambs, but I think that good filly (mare?) Karelia was second.

interesting thread
still didnt answer my question though ,about the same age and same name as RP ![]() |
|
By:
You on the right fred, casemoney?. What was the question?
|
|
By:
Karelia was second in Cambridgeshire - I remember the loss well. If you want a guide to the Royal Hunt Cup then just look for those that had previously finished well or ran on well in Grade C or higher handicaps over 7-8f on good or better ground. You'd have backed Refuse to Lose, Showboat and Norton.

It used to make me laugh when a contestant won and Miles seem to really resent giving them that 5/-. It was if it was his own money.

Casemoney,
No I was never on Millionaire - my only TV exposure consisted of about 30 appearances on the racing channel in 2002/3. The anorak tag came about from a regional TV documentary series made by London Weekend in 1996 which followed various individuals involved with racing. I was their tame pro punter and was asked whether I objected to people describing me as an anorak and I responded that it didn't bother me as I was an anorak that was making a living - the name stuck long after the show had been forgotten. |
