I suspect most punters if my age will know the feeling of all the years of the past merging together and I've been trying unsuccessfully to establish the right year for three key betting events from my youth.
The first involves a horse called Vigos Slipper, who ran in the Lincoln and then reappeared a few days later to win a 1m 3f handicap at Catterick - and if my memory is correct, the SP was about 9/2. Vigos Slipper went on to win two (or maybe three) more races that season, all of which were over 1m 3f at either Redcar or Catterick. This was my first ever winner, backed to the tune of 2s 6d each way.
The second relates to my first ever visit to Alexandra Palace and the only horse I remember was called Old Tom, who won the middle leg of the Tote Treble at 10/1 on, having finished second in the Brittania Handicap at Royal Ascot a week or two earlier. All three legs of the treble went to the favourite and I collected a dividend of about 17s for a 5s stake.
The third is a horse called Top of the Pops, who won the 5f handicap at the Ascot Heath meeting at something like 8/1 or 9/1. I backed this on the strength of a tip from my barber (!) and laid out £1 win, to which I added another 10s when the price lengthened at the second show.
As you can see, I retain quite a bit of the detail, but I can't fix the year for any of those bets. Any help gratefully received.

Vigos Slipper won at Catterick, Ayr & Redcar in 1965. Had a Timeform rating at the end of the 1965 season of 80. Old Tom won the Lincoln in 1965 I remember it well as I had backed it in the Lincoln the previous year!

I can remember Old Tom winning the Lincoln in the 60s. I was 13 at the time but my dad had a bet on him.
I don't have form boos but my Timeform annuals give the following : 1963 4ch.c. Won at Stockton in April and Zetland Hcap at Doncaster in June, 3rd in Rose of York Hcap in August. Very game and genuine 1964. Improved form to win two races and be placed three times in good company. Won Eastern Hcap at Newcastle in March, dead-heated for 3rd in Victoria Cup at newbury in May, won Matthew Peacock stakes at Haydock in September. 1965. Won Lincoln by 1/2l from Tarqogan. Possibly unlucky when 6th in Royal Hunt Cup finishing very strongly indeed. Died in 1965 and was trained by Peter Easterby. |

Top of the Pops won at Ascot in 1966.Decent horse had a Timeform rating at the end of 1966 of 113.Won the Albemarle Stakes at Ascot.

Onlooker will know. I remember Old Tom cos I backed it for the Lincoln. Scobie rode it. I was about 12, so 1964/65. My first ever 25/1 winner, I think

Thanks for all that info - that points to Old Tom winning at Ally Pally in 1962, as he had to be a 3-y-old to run in the Britannia.

I backed TARQOGAN and doubled him ew with JAY TRUMP for the national,
jockey did not do the horse justice with weak finish thinking he had it won, BREASLEY dosed him on the line, closer than 1/2 length I remember. |

I have a photo of the finish, bazzar, but it is not side on and I cannot be sure it was taken right on the line. I'd guess the distance is about a neck. Tarqogan went on to win the Cambs that season carrying 9st 3lbs. Mind, he might not have carried far off that in the Lincoln.

Old Tom was a 3yo in 1962, but he didn't run in the Britannia. The first 3 home were Fiacre, tamerlo, and Flag.
A future Lincoln winner did run in the race, though - Mighty Ghurka. |

Old Tom ran in the Royal Hunt Cup in '64 and '65, but was unplaced both times.

Believe it or not delta ,I was actually on the Show the night the Chap got in the seat ,I failed to do so ,he went on to win half a million the following show ,probably irrelevant

Top Of The Pops won the first race on the card at the Heath meeting at 11/2 fav.
The 2nd race on the card was won by The Knack at 25/1. I picked it out for my aunt (I think just because it was 1 from 1 - I had no idea of class of race - I was only 12) - and she put it in her usual cross doubles and a treble - but the others all lost, so she (and me) got no return. |

I'm starting to think that Old Tom wasn't the name of the Ally Pally horse that won at 10/1 on, but that I've remembered him from the Lincoln.
But I'm still pretty sure it was a meeting just after Royal Ascot and his price was down to him running so well there and having only two or three opponents at AP. |

Old Tom was reckoned to only just stay the mile, and Breasley held him up until late.
Vijay finished 5th, having been relegated to the rear rank at the start (39 runners), because he'd played up at the start the year before. Another horse also backed into him as the tapes went up. Old Tom was owned by a Mr Elbs, who left Norfolk to live in Kenya, had the horse bought for him in his absence as a 2yo, and never saw his horse run. |

My memory is that BREASLEY was allowed to come up between the far rail and TARQOGAN ,
the jockey who's name was the same as the trainer but NOT related, should not have left room for Breasley to do him but he did. |

Before I delve into the books, to 'dot the t's and cross the i's' - which may not be immediately, as we are currently racing .... The name Jimmy Etherington sprang to mind when I saw Vigo's Slipper. As has already been posted - with OLD TOM winning the Lincoln in the year suggested by Anorak - then, if Vigo's ran in that year's Lincoln, too - then that is probably a cross-reference connection/reason that has complicated the Ally Pally issue. |

It's an indication of how sophisticated I was as a punter back then - not, as the info about Vigos Slipper came from the man I worked for on a Saturday morning, helping out with his greengrocery round, selling fruit and veg door to door from the back of a converted removals van.
He told me it was running in the Lincoln as a racecourse gallop to get it ready for the Catterick race and that was the one it would win. No idea where he got this from, as we were in North London and the horse was trained in Yorkshire. He'd never even mentioned racing before, although I knew he liked a bet as I was also the Saturday afternoon boardboy in the local betting shop, which exposed me to all the characters in an otherwise sedate middle class suburb. |

You obviously helped the wrong, "fruit and veg man". Peter Naughton's, "fruit and veg man" - won the SCOOP6.  - although - in those days - it would have had to have been the Tote Jackpot. |

Racing journalist and broadcaster Peter Naughton was working live on Racing UK at Haydock when he learned that he had won 'around £7,500, not a life-changing sum' as part of a group entry run by his 'mate Arthur on the fruit and veg'. Remember it well , Numpty Naughton wetting himself with excitement , money no doubt long wasted away ......... |

Naughton's story isn't true though is it? It was a mate of his (who I think is a racing journalist) who dragged him in for £50 because the syndicate organiser (who certainly isn't a fruit and veg man) was upping the stake that week.
