I suspect most punters if my age will know the feeling of all the years of the past merging together and I've been trying unsuccessfully to establish the right year for three key betting events from my youth.

The first involves a horse called Vigos Slipper, who ran in the Lincoln and then reappeared a few days later to win a 1m 3f handicap at Catterick - and if my memory is correct, the SP was about 9/2. Vigos Slipper went on to win two (or maybe three) more races that season, all of which were over 1m 3f at either Redcar or Catterick. This was my first ever winner, backed to the tune of 2s 6d each way.

The second relates to my first ever visit to Alexandra Palace and the only horse I remember was called Old Tom, who won the middle leg of the Tote Treble at 10/1 on, having finished second in the Brittania Handicap at Royal Ascot a week or two earlier. All three legs of the treble went to the favourite and I collected a dividend of about 17s for a 5s stake.

The third is a horse called Top of the Pops, who won the 5f handicap at the Ascot Heath meeting at something like 8/1 or 9/1. I backed this on the strength of a tip from my barber (!) and laid out £1 win, to which I added another 10s when the price lengthened at the second show.

As you can see, I retain quite a bit of the detail, but I can't fix the year for any of those bets. Any help gratefully received.

Vigos Slipper won at Catterick, Ayr & Redcar in 1965. Had a Timeform rating at the end of the 1965 season of 80. Old Tom won the Lincoln in 1965 I remember it well as I had backed it in the Lincoln the previous year!

I can remember Old Tom winning the Lincoln in the 60s. I was 13 at the time but my dad had a bet on him.

I don't have form boos but my Timeform annuals give the following :

1963 4ch.c.   Won at Stockton in April and Zetland Hcap at Doncaster in June, 3rd in Rose of York Hcap in August.  Very game and genuine

1964. Improved form to win two races and be placed three times in good company.  Won Eastern Hcap at Newcastle in March, dead-heated for 3rd in Victoria Cup at newbury in May, won Matthew Peacock stakes at Haydock in September.

1965. Won Lincoln by 1/2l from Tarqogan. Possibly unlucky when 6th in Royal Hunt Cup finishing very strongly indeed.

Died in 1965 and was trained by Peter Easterby.

He was best on the soft, all his wins were on soft...yet he won the Lincoln on firm going

I'm starting to think that Old Tom wasn't the name of the Ally Pally horse that won at 10/1 on, but that I've remembered him from the Lincoln.

But I'm still pretty sure it was a meeting just after Royal Ascot and his price was down to him running so well there and having only two or three opponents at AP.
Report ged March 31, 2014 2:42 PM BST
Old Tom was reckoned to only just stay the mile, and Breasley held him up until late.

Vijay finished 5th, having been relegated to the rear rank at the start (39 runners), because he'd played up at the start the year before. Another horse also backed into him as the tapes went up.

Old Tom was owned by a Mr Elbs, who left Norfolk to live in Kenya, had the horse bought for him in his absence as a 2yo, and never saw his horse run.

Afternoon, everybody,

Before I delve into the books, to 'dot the t's and cross the i's' - which may not be immediately, as we are currently racing ....

The name Jimmy Etherington sprang to mind when I saw Vigo's Slipper.

As has already been posted - with OLD TOM winning the Lincoln in the year suggested by Anorak - then, if Vigo's ran in that year's Lincoln, too - then that is probably a cross-reference connection/reason that has complicated the Ally Pally issue.
Report ged March 31, 2014 4:03 PM BST
Vigo's carried 7-0 in that year's Lincoln, ridden by N McIntosh - came into it with form figs of 000004-

It's an indication of how sophisticated I was as a punter back then - not, as the info about Vigos Slipper came from the man I worked for on a Saturday morning, helping out with his greengrocery round, selling fruit and veg door to door from the back of a converted removals van.

He told me it was running in the Lincoln as a racecourse gallop to get it ready for the Catterick race and that was the one it would win. No idea where he got this from, as we were in North London and the horse was trained in Yorkshire. He'd never even mentioned racing before, although I knew he liked a bet as I was also the Saturday afternoon boardboy in the local betting shop, which exposed me to all the characters in an otherwise sedate middle class suburb.

----------------

The Alexandra Park meeting, "following Royal Ascot," was, in fact - the second such meeting after Royal Ascot.

It was run on WEDNESDAY June 30th

* Incidentally, I thought that Ally Pally - moved to Monday evenings - and then Windsor inherited those fixtures - as now.
-------------

Somewhat coincidentally - the second race, that Wednesday, was won by a horse called - NEVER NEVER, the Favourite.

A horse called NEVER NEVER - has JUST won the last race at Hexham, as the Favourite. Happy
----------

The Winners that Wednesday evening were ...

2-y-o Seller - WHISTLE TIME - P Rafferty - W O'Gorman - 12 ran -7/2 2ndfav

1m 5f Handicap - NEVER NEVER - W Guest - Sir Gordon Richards(Trainer) - 4 ran - 4/5 Fav

2-y-o Maiden Fillies - HEN-PECKED - Frankie Durr - J Walsh - 6 ran - 6/5 Fav

1m 5f Handicap - ATTRACTIVE - 'Weary' Willie Williamson - Walter Wharton - owned by Major Lionel Holliday - 6 ran - 11/4 2ndfav

1m Handicap - TROMBA - Lester Piggott - Fred Armstrong - 3 ran - 1/10 Fav.
----------

Tote Double - 10 shillings Stake - £6 7s ( 175 winning tickets)

Tote TREBLE - 5 shillings Stake Happy - 17 shillings (887 tickets)

SP of Tote TREBLE winners ... 4/5 - Evens - 1/10.

The "middle leg of the Tote TREBLE," was won by Polynia - who had previously finished 4th in a Folkestone Maiden.

The Final leg of the Tote TREBLE being the, "1/10 Fav, who had run at Royal Ascot" - as referred to, by TheAnorak  -

But the horse was TrOMba - part of Old TOM in THAT name, though  Grin - who HAD, indeed, finished, "second in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot."

So - well remembered The Anorak.

Looking at the Tote pool another way, one thousand pounds was about my fathers salary as a senior civil servant in the Home Office at that time, and I reckon that would now be more like £60k.

Or again, we had moved five years earlier into a three bed semi in North London for which my father paid £2,850. The same house changed hands three years ago for £390,000.

So the official change of value based on inflation figures seems to indicate the extent to which government has fiddled the figures over the years.

Tamerlo was 2nd in the Britannia Stakes and won next time out at Brighton on 2 July followed up by another win at Goodwood on 3 August.  They were his only 2 wins of the year.

Admirals Lark won at Ally Pally on 26 June he had finished down the field in the Royal Hunt Cup on 20 June.  Admirals Lark won the last race on the card at Ally Pally and so would have been part of the tote treble.
You are right all three legs of the tote treble went to the favourite.  Lucky Harry @ 5/2, Altimeter @ 9/4, and Adimrals Lark was 11/10.  There were 194 winning tickets and the tote treble paid £7.11s or £7.55p in decimal coinage.

No I was never on Millionaire - my only TV exposure consisted of about 30 appearances on the racing channel in 2002/3.

The anorak tag came about from a regional TV documentary series made by London Weekend in 1996 which followed various individuals involved with racing. I was their tame pro punter and was asked whether I objected to people describing me as an anorak and I responded that it didn't bother me as I was an anorak that was making a living - the name stuck long after the show had been forgotten.
