Thats why I thought it was a strange ride mart..went for home far too early on bad ground...had he taken a "pull" and waited a bit longer then BB would have won imo.

Paul Nicholls said after the race that he had told Sam to be positive so don't blame the jockey. As the race worked out, what was he supposed to do when the other 2 pacemakers fell away, take a pull and wait for the main dangers to keep him company? as others have said, the hill and soft ground found him out this time as it has so many in the past.

Has always worked in the past.....if Ruby had rode BB it would have won, he knows the horse inside out..STD does not.
Come the world hurdle, it will be more or less guaranteed that BB will be "waited with" to some extent.

before racing jonathan neesom said the ground was soft all the way round, but the straight was bottomless.
look at the 2m hurdle following the cleeve,in to the straight there was 2/3l covering the whole field, come to the line the majority were tailed off.
the straight was bottomless.

on first viewing i thought std had done little wrong, but now i agree with the chaps above.
he went to early and bottomed the horse, and i think the jockey and connections know it.

Report sageform January 26, 2014 8:40 AM GMT
Koi, Ruby would probably have waited back alongside McCoy but Sam was told to do what he did and with 3 horses going clear, it was a no win situation. Two of them were going to stop a long way out. It looked a great ride to me until the last 100 yards. You could argue that the winner would have dotted up if he had been allowed a bigger lead. Nobody seems to criticize AP for sitting so far back and getting beat a head.

Report Angel Gabrial January 26, 2014 8:52 AM GMT
Sam rode Big Bucks just as he normally is, taking it up 3 out. There was no flat spot so he was probably travelling better than most of us thought. Taking a pull and waiting to take it up at the last would have been going against the `ride a positive race` instructions from connections.

Anyone who backed BB has to look in the mirror if they are now moaning about the ride. What was the odds Big Bucks would have been ridden to normal instructions?Crazy 1/5 perhaps? Did they want to blow away the cobwebs? yup. Is the World Hurdle the target again? yup. BB was 6/5 for a reason, that reason is that he more than likely would need the race. Your money is not the concern of the connections as long as horse and rider try to win the race by the riding the horse as normal, which he did.
Report halcyon days January 26, 2014 8:58 AM GMT
STD is a young lad and unlike Big Bucks plenty of improvement still to come !

I believe he rode to orders, and obviously hasn't got Ruby's ''in built clock'' to judge the pace of the race, and understand the vagaries of both horse and track re: going ! Many times did Ruby do his own thing and not ride to Nicholls instructions whilst still attaining the right result !

Be interesting to know if he walked the course..... and was aware of the bottomless ground from the last obstacle ?.....
Report moondan January 26, 2014 8:58 AM GMT
I took the e.w on Fishers Cross yesterday and thought I was unlucky not to collect in full.

Fishers is the horse to take out of the race, it has a future.

With regards the ride, did not think that sam did much wrong I am just a bit confused as to why he is suddenly thought of as the next champion jockey.
No doubt in my mind that Ruby left Nichols because most of the stars in the yard were at the wrong end of their careers and replacements were not obvious.

With regards to heavy ground racing I never like to see horses held up because unless the front runners come back you are dead.
Fishers was held up because his health and jumping had been an issue but had that not been the case I think it would have won easily.
Forget Big Bucks he will never beat Fishers Cross.

The king is dead long live the king.
Report Angel Gabrial January 26, 2014 9:12 AM GMT
Moondan if you are taking the form literally then you are saying Fishers Cross was unlucky not or badly ridden to beat Knockara Beau the 145 rated 11 year old. Hardly King worthy.

I can not take the form literally.
Report nanny January 26, 2014 9:23 AM GMT
He may have kicked for home because of his poor tactical ride on Double Ross, who is an out and out stayer, but was held up to long, and then beaten for speed.
Report moondan January 26, 2014 9:33 AM GMT
Angel.

I dont think the going suited any horse and yes it was a muddled affair but Fishers form had been a big concern for the stable as was all the stables runners.
My money will say Fishers will not be beaten again this year or next for that matter and I think its sometimes forgotten that he is by far the most serious threat that big bucks has n had to face in about 5 years.
Thanks to Big Bucks we may start to see these long distance races become more competitive instead of the 5-6 runner affairs which has been the norm.
And thank the racing Gods for that because its been pretty boring and over hyped up until now.
Hope to hear from you at the German open this week, cannot support the shootout in any way.

the criticism of STD is ridiculous.

rode the horse exactly as it is is always ridden, looked all over the winner but is not the horse he was in 2012.  A 70 per cent Big Bucks should have laughed at that field imo.

the excuses re being off the racecourse have been made and are valid.

we will see come world hurdle day who is right, of course it also depends who his rivals are on the day

i remember See You Then being off the track for an age when he won his last CH, won his one prep race and then the CH.

koikeeper spot on imo.  as soon as std kicked for home a mile out i knew straight away would be difficult for bb to win. surley std has watched recording of bb wins in the past. as far as i can remember hes never been ridden as forcefully as this and from my limited experience of racehorses, horses coming back from a tendon injury scare would want an easy race first time back and bb was given a hard race due to forcing the issue a mile from home.

Report aberdonia January 26, 2014 10:37 AM GMT
He lost the race so the Nicholls team would obviously would have tried something different.

It is pure speculation however, based on how Big Bucks performed, that he would have won with different tactics, bearing in
mind Big Bucks normally wins ridden the way he was yesterday imo.
Report aberdonia January 26, 2014 10:40 AM GMT
Mange, i think he will win the World Hurdle as well, providing Annie Power does not turn up.
Report festivalfanatic January 26, 2014 10:44 AM GMT
STD was chosen to ride the horse for 2 reasons - he is highly rated in the weighing room (Geraghty said as much earlier this season) and he normally gives horses positive rides - this is the way that he has been brought up. You don't see many of his dad's ridden patiently.

Turning in yesterday, I thought BB was going to win. If he had been given a more patient ride, he might have done. More likely that a combination of the ground and lack of race fitness would have done for him anyway.
Report differentdrum January 26, 2014 10:45 AM GMT
Really? How many of his races has he lead 6f out in? I suspect hardly any. Most of the time he would have been asked to pick up the leader on the run to the last or even after.

Walsh wouldn't have been interested in getting any 'big jumps' out of the horse until he really asked him to race. All about conserving his energy.

Really? How many of his races has he lead 6f out in? I suspect hardly any. Most of the time he would have been asked to pick up the leader on the run to the last or even after.   LaughLaughLaughLaugh

Big Bucks WILL hose up in World Hurdle imo. Personally thought it was good(not great) comeback run and STD just got there too soon(hindsight is a wonderful thing). Apart from AP nothing will get near him. 6/4 was a gift and laying at 1/2 was also obvious thing to do (sorry about the aftertiming Tongue Out). 3/1 after the race for WH thanks very much Cool Hopefully AP goes for CH or if Mrs Ricci gets her way The Mares race Confused. Nicholls horses usually go quiet before Festival, so wouldn't worry too much but the sooner he gets STD or imo Townend as stable jockey the better. Lac Fontana fairly finished yesterday the fekker i backed the 2nd Sad

Big Bucks lost the race the way it was ridden no question about it...most people know that's not the way to ride the horse.
Report EastLower Gooner January 26, 2014 12:20 PM GMT
Actually think STD got it right. BB is not a speed horse...always finds a terrific amount off the bridle. Just look at his last world hurdle win when he took up very early and broke the speed horses and non stayers on the turn back for home.

Yesterday's race was falling apart quickly...made sense to go for it so far out and give the horse what he what he really needed - a solid pre Cheltenham workout.

Nicholls even admitted b4 the race that if he had done things differently he would've gotten 1 more racecourse gallop into BB before yesterday....I suspect he thought the horse's sheer class would've pulled him through....he eluded to this on the morning line when Tom was making his case for Boston Bob and he said something like - yeah but he beat 130, 140 horses last time....that's not up there with what BB's is capable off ie 170+ performances.

Pretty similar situation to Silvinaco imo....said pre haydock the horse was bang on but then after the king George win said - I just knew if I had him spot on at Haydock he wouldn't have won today....bit of kick in the arse for punters but I'm guessing its the same with Big Bucks.

The whole team would be disappointed it....who wouldn't be? he won a zillion races over hurdles and finally lost his unbeaten tag yesterday....got to be a little shock to system....but they got what they wanted - a solid work out and its now all roads back to the Festival.

The more worrying thing about yesterdays race for me was the fact AT FISHERS CROSS couldn't even beat Knockbara Beau.....Big Bucks has excuses with his fitness but what the hell is AFC's excuse? That's even more desperate for me.
Report moondan January 26, 2014 12:27 PM GMT
Ruby knew when to get out. That was a clue in itself.

Is Reynard being serious here.

It`s a bit late now Reynard, but Big Bucks has done rather well being ridden in a similar way. ?Crazy

I've just cottoned on to the thread title. I remember a race many moons ago from Hong Kong I think it was. The horse was most definitely not supposed to be trying but nobody told the horse. The poor jockey spent the whole race trying to do his best Boston Strangler impression all to no avail. All the way up the straight he was casting increasingly anxious glances back towards the field which receded further and further into the distance. All seemed lost as they entered the final furlong with the jockey now needing binoculars to see his toiling rivals and then he jumped off the horse. Laugh

If Sam had waited and then Big Bucks hit his flat spot between the last and 2nd last and got beat 3/4L the moaners would be up in arms about him not kicking on.

Reynard, yes Ruby would just have squeezed Big Bucks along and gone to the front between the 3rd last and 2nd last and won 1/2L all out, but Ruby knows the horse and is a better jockey than Sam. This is why BB was 6/5 and not 5/6, punters need to assess before they pile in.
Report georgebakerfanclub January 26, 2014 2:13 PM GMT
No idea if it would have won but I have never seen it ridden that way before, usually held up until the last hurdle. So unless he was told to do it has to go down as a ill judged ride. IMHO.

Have you ever seen Big Bucks ridden without being drunk?
Report Angel Gabrial January 26, 2014 2:21 PM GMT
usually held up until the last hurdleLaugh

Disputed lead until strode ahead on bridle after 3 out, canter

Chased leaders, led 3 out, clear approaching last, easily (op 1-5)

Tracked leaders, went 2nd 9th, narrow lead after 3 out, urged along and quickened after 2 out, hung left before last where pressed, drifted right flat but stayed on mightily (op 4-5 tchd 10-11 in places and 8-11 in places)

Guess the name of this horse George?

yorkie he never gave it a shocking ride he gave it a great ride , if he had held it up it wd have got beaten ,you no how much energy they expend making up ground , Cheltenham as a rule of thumb does not suit hold up tactics , even on good ground , that why mr joe 90 timmy murphy , gets beat so often , they make up ground nothing left for the hill , big bucks just did not get up the hill after over 400 days off,  coming back from injury against race fit rivals , the horse is always up with the van , like I said they held it up once it was well beat , lot off punters talking through pockets, trying too way blame , try Wonga loans al give you 20p go call them ! the horse was beaten by fitter rivals on the day , take your losses with dignity you got a great run , but fitness told in the end , end off chapter !
