Jeze Istabraq or The Fly over 2 and 1/2 miles. Over 3 miles plus at Chelts BB would pick either one up carry him round  and beat the other. The Fly definitely one of best ever. But for injury would have a supreme and four CHs

Given your username you are excused on the basis that this is a fishing trip or you maybe too young to have witnessed the great hurdlers of yesteryear.
Hurricane Fly is best of his generation without a doubt but certainly not the best ever.

Night Nurse, Sea Pigeon, Comedy of Errors, See You Then, Bula, Hatton's Grace, Sir Ken

a travesty that they've taken Bula's name away from the hurdle race at Cheltenham before Christmas.

I had £200 @ 10/1 the year it didn't make Cheltenham. Unlucky or what? Just remember it's got bad legs.

Istabraq was once turned over by Pridwell at 2m4f.

Funnily enough when the argument was put forward to do down Frankel based on the quality or horse it beat and especially what the 2nd did afterwards, there are too many positives for the ones Istabraq beat in his 3 CH wins.

Hurricane Fly a true great , just like Istabraq.

But neither of them had the competion on the golden era of the 70's nor the Brave Inca / Harchibald / Hardy Eustace/ Mac's Joy Era.

And let's be honest if you had a champ , would you not rather have him in an era of fewer potential rivals.

Of the five horse that won the Champion Hurdle between 1973-1981 I'd have four of them, Comedy of Errors, Night Nurse, Monksfield and Sea Pigeon all superior to Hurricane Fly - and the other,Lanzarote, close to his equal. And that ain't rose tinted spectacles, it's the pure in depth quality in the hurdling sphere during that period.

One of those supposedly sub-standard Champion Hurdle wins had 2 previous CH winners in behind.

It's impossible to come up with a definitive answer to the best hurdler ever and whilst you can use some obvious criteria to support any claims, the quality of horse beaten isn't everything as they can only beat what they race against and how good are the opponents Usain Bolt is beating in recent seasons yet I would imagine most people would put him right up there with the very best 100m/200m sprinters ever.

for starters the ch hurdle like the ch chase was all about flat out brilliant jumping on good ground, its now gd to sft at best and horses can afford the odd mistake, not be as fluent as 20 yrs ago and still win

Bolt= speed figures Ima nothing else........... like Un De Sceaux has very quick speed figures........... as for H.F Vs Istab they both beat what was around at the time and both beat mediocre fields, compared to previous winners in the past(Brave Inca, Night Hurse, Sea Pigeon where stronger contests by a long way)....... but hopefully Mullins will run Un De Sceaux in the big one and that will sort out the best this year.

Of course speed figures are important easygold but my point was if Bolt is beating nobodies and say Carl Lewis was beating Linford Christie, Ben Johnson, Frankie Fredricks, Dennis Mitchell and Calvin Smith the you can't just say Lewis was better because he beat better opponents but other posters seem to solely want to solely judge horses like Frankel and Hurricane Fly on the horses they have beaten.

Just out of interest though, what's you source or reasoning behind Un De Sceaux having very quick speed figures?

Timeform had Istabraq (180) as the best since Night Nurse (182)and on a par with Monksfield (180). Not sure what they have for the Fly.

Of course the greatest hurdler of all time would have been Golden CygnetWink - Timeform 176 AS A NOVICE. I think I remember reading that that was a better rating than over 80% of Champion Hurdle winners, before or since.

Whilst it makes for an interesting debate, people cannot be relied upon to leave personal bias aside, its human nature after all.

At the end of the day it is all superfluous, as nothing can ever be proven or decided irrefutably when those expressing their opinions, are like the horses, from many different generations.
