Report salmon spray November 10, 2013 7:08 PM GMT
I don't think he rode him.
Andy made his name on an outside ride Sky Pink a year or two later.
Report salmon spray November 10, 2013 7:11 PM GMT
Sorry he did. Claimed 5lbs. Can't have been more than 16.

Did he feature in a 1-2 one time with stablemate Hanassi? One of them was 8/1 I think.

Maybe the other was 100/8, or I might be thinking of a diffeent horse altogether. they came up the stand rail, running left to right on the TV screen, wherever it was. Newbury perhaps.
Report salmon spray November 10, 2013 7:29 PM GMT
Not that season ged.
I think I have the following season's but as it took me 10 mins to find that one you'll have to wait for onlooker.

Does anyone remember Tudor Dance and Frozen Alive having a terrific battle one Saturday afternoon (Sandown or Ascot) with Johnny Haine (or maybe Jeff King) and Stan Mellor riding - then repeating it a couple of Saturdays later with a 3rd horse in the mix as well? One of the best 2-horse battles I've seen - great riders too. Fantastic television.

I only ask that because I've got Tudor Dance in the same bit of my head as Mayfair Bill and Hanassi.

Only if it was Sandown. The BBC had Ascot.
And it was Tony Cook who was their race commentator then.

ged - Cannot find that - Tried 1964 to 1969.

Have found - Mayfair Bill beating Antiar, by 3/4 length in the Stoke Poges Handicap Hurdle at Windsor - Antiar was Cazalet's - 20/1 (opened 100/8)

Have fund Hanassi finishing 3rd to Turnell's Fine Art - and also 3rd to Turnell's Sky Pink (at Kempton)
Report ged November 10, 2013 9:44 PM GMT
onlooker - thanks. Was Hanassi Turnell's? I was fairly sure in my mind it was Hanassi who was either 1st or 2nd, with another Turnell horse in the 1-2 - and being either Mayfair Bill or Tudor Dance, and that it was 'left-to-right' finish on the TV.
Report ged November 10, 2013 9:45 PM GMT
I could have course have 'conflated' 2 races - wouldn't be the first time.
Report onlooker November 10, 2013 10:09 PM GMT
Yes - Hanassi was Turnell's

Mayfair Bill was 9 yrs old in 1968 - Not got him running in 68/69
Hanassi was 8 yrs old -  ditto -

Both Tudor Dance and Frozen Alive were foaled in 1966 - so had, obviously not dun over Jumps by 68/69
Report salmon spray November 10, 2013 11:54 PM GMT
Sky Pink was ridden by Andy a lot but wasn't he trained by John Sutcliffe ?
Report PAULBU November 11, 2013 11:32 AM GMT
Don't worry Ged, you're not losing it.

Kempton Park Saturday 28th Feb 1970 KP Hurdle 2m

1 Frozen Alive 11-5 S Mellor 7-2 fav
2 Tudor Dance 10-10 J King 5-1
3 Highland Abbe 11-3 D Holley 100-6

Distances Nk, Nk

And yes, it was a right handed track.
Report ged November 11, 2013 11:46 AM GMT
Thanks Paulbu - that must have been the 2nd of the 2 races between Frozen Alive and Tudor Dance (both at right-handed tracks, in fairly close proximity timewise)

...but the Hanassi race I was trying to recall was a different affair, and my memory is obviously shakier there.
Report mentalbird November 11, 2013 11:47 AM GMT
Did they meet at the Kempton Christmas meeting also? Does anyone remember Canasta Lad and Barnard meeting in novice chases, did they both fall at the last at Wincanton  once?
Report PAULBU November 11, 2013 12:06 PM GMT
You're correct again, Ged

Kempton Park Saturday 27th Dec 1969 Egham Hurdle 2m (3-y-o)

1 Frozen Alive 10-10 S Mellor 7-4 fav
2 Tudor Dance 10-10 J King 11-4
3 Regal Path 11-3 D Barrott 100-30

Distances sh hd, 15
Report ged November 11, 2013 12:08 PM GMT
Thanks again. Mentalbird correct on that one.
Report PAULBU November 11, 2013 12:14 PM GMT
Sorry Mentalbird, I hadn't seen your posting re the Kempton Christmas meeting.
Report ged November 11, 2013 12:22 PM GMT
I think the December one was probably the best. The 2 were head and head from the 2nd last, and in those days the didn't camera didn't try to get up their nostrils, so you had a really good view of them pulling clear and battling each other, and both jockeys were all action.
Report PAULBU November 11, 2013 12:53 PM GMT
Mentalbird, Barnard and Canasta Lad met a couple of times, most noticeably when first and second respectively in the 1971 Gloucestershire Hurdle. They were novice chasers in different seasons, Barnard in 72-73 and Canasta Lad in 73-74 and they never met in a novice chase. Barnard once fell at the last at Cheltenham when well clear.
Report mentalbird November 11, 2013 1:27 PM GMT
17.01.1974, Wincanton, Barnard 5/4 fell 2 out, Vikrom ( not Canasta Lad) 5/6 fell last but remounted to win. Had to look it up.
Report mentalbird November 11, 2013 1:41 PM GMT
The Kempton race on Dec 27 was the last on the card, must have been on BBC then, I had been to Wolverhampton earlier with my Grandad , but it was abandoned due to fog. I can't remember which one I backed, Tudor Dance was Jim Joel's , I think the Tv coverage finished before the result was called and so didn't find out until the 6 or 7 pm radio results.

My favoutite horse at the time.Andy Turnell, also rode Fishermans Song about the same time.probably only a seller tho.
Report PAULBU November 11, 2013 2:39 PM GMT
Ged, I don't think Hanassi was ever with Bob Turnell. Andy rode the horse from time to time along with Johnny Haine but according to Horses In Training/ Racing Up To Date data, Hanassi was trained by :-

1962-4 Ryan Price
1964-5 Mick Masson
1965-8 Major J Goldsmith
Report mentalbird November 11, 2013 2:52 PM GMT
Thurs Oct 20 1966, Hannassi A Turnell beat Makaldar 3/4 L at Newbury, sp 8/1. I think that meeting used to be on BBC, it was a mixed meeting, Horris Hill day.
Report ged November 11, 2013 4:37 PM GMT
Thanks both. Looks like I've crossed a few wires there then.
