I wont be playing this race,but couldnt help looking at its form when I saw its price and who trained it.
INTERESTING to say the least,I wonder if HF is in on this one,has all the hallmarks of a J Best,he was on one of these last April.
Surely on form it has to be a lay at that price.

Seem to remember Best giving an interview a while back saying he was looking for more 'Saturday' horses and wouldn't be playing the system, lining one up for a touch etc anymore. Seems old habits die hard.

The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of PLANETOID (IRE), ridden by Mattie Batchelor and trained by Jim Best, which raced in rear throughout, finishing seventh, beaten 111 lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer’s representative. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer, and observations from the Handicapper. The rider stated that his instructions were to try to get his mount to jump well, as PLANETOID (IRE) had so far failed to translate his Flat-race ability to jumping and had fallen on his previous start. He further stated that PLANETOID (IRE) had generally jumped better today but was outpaced, being unsuited by the heavy going. He had considered pulling up in the back straight, but had felt that he might possibly manage to catch up the back-markers who appeared to be slowing. The trainer’s representative confirmed these instructions. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations. |

4.20, fifth race The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, PLANETOID (IRE), ridden by A.P. McCoy, and trained by Jim Best, which had never previously been placed. They interviewed the trainer who stated that the gelding had problems with his jumping last year and has been given a break in order to re-school him over hurdles. He further added that PLANETOID (IRE) was suited by this quicker ground and running for the first time in a handicap. Having heard his evidence they forwarded his explanation to the British Horseracing Authority so that the previous performances of PLANETOID (IRE) could be reviewed. The Stewards ordered the gelding to be routine tested. |

After looking at today's racing cards last night and seeing the utter dross that was racing today I decided not to even bother looking at the prices or anything today as I am not having a bet. Can anybody tell me what price Planetoid opened up at generally this morning before it got down to the SP of 5/6??
Is every race below class 3 bent in both flat and jumps racing?? Seems like it!! |

From that graph, it looks like an early gamble 4s to evens which stopped as punters realised Mattie was no longer riding.
The only other explanation is they were AP followers who knew about the jockey change in advance but I don't see how that can be the case. |

Thanks for that Kenny, very informative. 11/4 in to 11/10 in 40mmins. Between 9am-9:40am. For that kind of gamble to happen in 40 mins is very informative.
Mattie Batchelor's car/dentist was obviously known about long before 2:30pm!! Suspicious betting pattern indeed, You just don't see them types of betting collapses over such a short period of time. It stinks and as usual the genuine day to day punter is being put away again. Horse racing a corrupt business or a sport? Don't see how these type of races can be described as a 'Sport'. |

Bookmakers have very low limits for punters to get on early in the morning to try and protect themselves some more against stuff like this happening. You don't know how many people in how many different locations at how many different shops they had putting their bets on for them...
Perhaps A LOT of people were in on this and they knew the price was going to collapse regardless so they had to get on early? The only people who know this are Best and his cronies. Agree with you that it's not very smart though with how obvious they have made it look and the adding of McCoy on top just added the cherry on top. Imagine the outrage that this has caused and times it by 10 if AP was wearing green and gold on top of the horse today  |

Same betting patterns with Alan Jones, Noel Quinlan & John Butler. The "plot horses" are hammered from first thing.
Michael Wigham varies his betting operation, his now drift and are then hammered 3 mins before the off, a much better ploy all round. David Rees & Sophie Leech also use the late switch of jockey (usually to Paul Moloney), then the price collapses, but their bets are already on. What was more significant in today's race was the 3rd ........ keep tabs on it ...... today's result was carved up before they ran. In fact, the 3rd was not meant to get placed and was heavily layed in both the win & place markets ....... Costello not in their good books after that. Here endeth the first lesson ....    |

....... expect the h/capper to lump 20lb on it next Wednesday (up to 105) ...... so 3:50 Fontwell next Tuesday off 85 + 6lb extra = 91 should be a formality with a stone in hand, after today's schooling run ..... going should stay G-F with watering ......

However If one knew the horse had been re-schooled, was now jumping a lot better, and the trainer had him about right, and taking into account his reasonable flat form, then it was a different story First time in hcap as well, so a carefully planned coup. It is possible some shrewdies could have guessed this may happen, not me, otherwise one needed to be in the know Looks very bad for racing when a horse improves quite this much from previous form. The ordinary punter has little chance. But J Best will probably get away with it. |

The BHA are spineless. They will just wait for something big to come out in public again where they are forced to act such as with Al Zarooni...

An 85 horse from the Flat has a few "jogs",runs off the same Mark over Hurdles,is backed off the Boards in the morning and,finally the Champion Jockey is a late "switch".

Were huge bets placed??? or did the bookies run from this, and it was actually shortened up for little money? the bookies may have sensed a pattern here, and of course its flat form meant it was a potential improver in a hcap for time If big bets really were wagered I would think there should be a case for a ban here Whatever the horses potential, it hardly warranted started 5/6f on any previous hurdle form It is the horses 6 "jogs" last year I would not be happy about |
