Ignorance is not a defence as the farmer knew full well.

^ It seems to be ignorance ...Because a couple of Al Zarooni’s horses tested positive last season the trainer was warned that, at any time in the next 12 months, he could receive an unannounced visit from the BHA’s testing unit. They arrived early in the morning on April 9.

telegraph.co.uk

Anabolic steroids are used primarily to strengthen or beef up horses and can be given to a horse in training only if it has had a life-threatening illness or injury and under special permission from a vet. Usually if it is ill enough to justify steroids as a medication it is out of training.

Seven of the horses, including Certify, tested positive for Ethylestrenol while four, including last year’s Ascot Gold Cup runner-up Opinion Poll, tested positive for Stanozolol. Both are short acting and should be through a horse’s system within a month. All 11 horses could now be banned from running for the remainder of the season. The BHA hinted at this when saying the horses would be out for an “extended” period

They wont up sticks, it was not one of their English trainers that phucked up.  It was an in house c ock up and the Sheikh should be taking the ultimate responsibility for the actions of his employee's.

They wont do an Aga Khan.  They will take it on the chin and carry on.

I really don't think it right to say that Mo should take the ultimate responsibility...surely he employs Crisford fo that purpose and if he's taken his eye off the ball then he should fall on his sword.

posy , how many times have you seen Zarooni interviewed after a winner and he basically gives all credit to Sheik Mo and says he just does as the great man tells him.

The buck stops with the boss.

Remember ....a fish rots from the head down.

I doubt that Godolphin are the only outfit using these enhancing training methods.
The honest trainers haven't got a chance. It is really shocking and outrageous. So sad for the honesty and integrity of the sport.
There are a few stables in Ireland that need a visit.

Are we all not guilty?  If the prize money wasn't there, (and if the gambling industry didn't exist), then thoroughbreds wouldn't be raced at such tender ages of 2 years old.  Horses don't mature properly until 4, 5, 6....

Mr Hendersons vet administered something to help horses who have a tendancy to bleed during races - the vet was stupidly unaware that this particular aid unlike some others was banned

Doesn't get any bigger than Godolphin....  They own racing, and still need to dope their horses.  Says a hell of a lot..  CrazyCrazy

A few follow-up points, guys

1. The vet(s) would surely have administered the drugs and the drugs would have to be procured from somewhere. Blaming on the trainer is rather like the lone assassin explanations.

2. I believe the use of steroids in horses per se, never mind Thoroughbreds, is banned across the European Union because the horse under EU Law is a food animal. So this isn't just a breach of the Rules of Racing but a breach of EU Law.

And there are two decongestant drugs which are easily available which, if you use them over a period of three months, have the same affect as a steroid. This is because they contain clenbuterol which all the East German athletes and gymnasts used. When you read of a horse having tested positive for a decongestant, it is mainly cobblers in that the decongestant will have included clenbuterol and was probably being administered for the reason above.

The withdrawal period is very short, say a week to 10 days.
By:

So you can have your horses on this for the whole time, just take them off it a week to 10 days before racing, and it is just the same as using a steroid with the obvious advantage of you don't test positive!!

and if the out-of-competition testers come round, your friendly vet will have prescribed it for respiratory reasons

Trainer succumbed to the pressure.  Pressure of training for the largest owner in the world, pressure from the Coolmore challenge, pressure from Bin Surour.   He needed winners to keep is position and hence resorted to this.

The ignorance plea is nonsense.  His vets will have administered any substance (only on direction of the trainer) and don't tell me the vets aren't aware of the rules.

"

Has Alan Lee or Julian Muscat entered the building?, anyone remember Binocular been a certain non runner for the Champion hurdle only for it to take a 2 week sojourn in Ireland in the care of the Ballydoyle vet and come back home kicking and bucking and hose up in the Champion hurdle?.

the bit that i find truely damning and unforgivable is this wasnt a single horse getting treatment to get over a physical problem .To my untrained eye it seems a regular part of many of the string were being trained on steroids ... and if steroids why not anything else after all once youve taken the ist step to cheat because lets not forget thats exactly what it is ,, then anything it seems goes .There is shortly going to be the big circus around frankie dettorie returning no doubt with his cheeky chappie grin in play ,the odd grin and lets not forget the crowd pleaseing flying dismount on his first winner back ... then the interview where he says last few months have been a nightmare and hes looking forward to the future ,,, who will dare to ask in these interviews if he has an opinion on the fact that his success might have been gained in the manner of lance armstrong or ben johnson .Im certain this wont be asked after all why rock the small boat that is racing ...you wont be allowed back on again . im really dissapointed ,not surprised but def dissapointed

I wonder if his doping policy (his stupidity most likely went on for quite some time) caused the death of Rewilding?

Extraordinary perfomance to run down So You Think that saw him catipulted into the King George mix as a livewire contender :(

I think Nicolas Godfrey summed it up correctly today....MAZ has forfeited his right to comment on any speculation about the previous running of his horses.

-----

on another note...had the doping discussion with one of my buddies a while back...gym nut who loves his cycling...said he wasn't surprised anabolics were used...said Blood Passports like the TDF would probably bring up some shocking results in racing.

If they done an on the spot check on every racing stable in Britain and Ireland right now you would get scores of similar results to godolphin, horses are been doped in training so they can work them harder on the lead up to the races, you'd want to be pretty naive to think this is an isolated incident and only the Americans dope horses?.

Does anyone ever question the remarkable transformations in form from many of the qualified vet Mark Johnsons charges?.
