catterick was amuseing yesterday,in the last they pulled the 2nd fav out around 20mins before the race, around 1/2 the led boards were given a break for 5 mins till the machine updated. |
By:
jimnast
Serious question 50 books at Wetherby today how many could price up without a machine. |
By:
ronnie do you mean be first up with there own tissue ?
By:
jimnast
Years ago when I used to unsuccessfully bet on the spreads I was always a seller, if we had a market of people putting their tissues up first I would be a very heavy seller at 6 to 8, do u think I would have made a few quid. |
By:
Adge, making a book in february, are you not well! this must be contrary to the A.P. rule book.
By:
JIMNAST - ARE YOU REALLY SURPRISED ?
RONNIE - I ADMIT THAT THESE DAYS I COULD NOT PRICE A RACE FROM SCRATCH AND BE CONFIDENT ENOUGH TO PUT THEM ON THE BOARD......BUT HOW MANY COULD ? |
By:
lol ronnie at 6 i would be a heavier seller than you.
i think a couple could have a go,but i would only fancy one to be able to price up all day without any exchanges in view for anybody,if like the old days the staff from the other books waited for his show they would be f....d on charlie hall and boxing day because he wouldnt get on. |
By:
mugbookie
i was a little surprised there was only 5 runners you would have thought they could have had a go they had the show before the horse was withdrawn. |
By:
ronnie re the spreads i to was very unsuccesful at that game,in fact ive yet to meet anybody who could make that pay.
By:
JIMNAST - ITS A BIT LIKE BETTING WITHOUT - HOW MANY COULD WORK OUT THE PRICES WITHOUT USING THE MACHINE ? REMEMBER GILLIBRAND......A WITHOUT MASTER AT WORK....OFTEN WITH HIS OWN TISSUE.
By:
mugbookie
in my first years of going racing i would stand and watch gillie an absoulute master, betting without but better still betting on the photo. sht head 1/2 head 4/6 neck evens 1/2 length 3/1 dead heat 3/1 fantastic ![]() ![]() |
By:
that betting without i think you have to do that all the time or not at all.

Gillibrand there’s a blast from the past, betting on the photo evens a dead heat 4 to 5 a short head, evens a head, 4 to 6 a neck, official result wins by half a length, now I'm definitely showing my age. Signing of now lads as the other half’s threatening to half my length and I have a full and exiting day at Korals tomorrow, don’t forget never a quarrel forget Koral. |
By:
JIMNAST - ONE OF THE TRUE MASTERS OF THE BETTING RING...SADLY MISSED.....HE'D HAVE PUT A FEW TO SHAME THESE DAYS.
By:
NIGHT RONNIE - AT LEAST TRY TO ENJOY YOUR SHIFT
By:
agree jimnast only works at a few tracks imo and more often than not its better with a short un in the race and if its nh .....believe me we have tried it and its hard work although a betting too a better percentage ...remember ronnie and sam dempster made a living for yrs up here in the north and scotland ?

heres a nice story about gillie a friend of mine had an sp office and did quite a bit of phone buissness with a few strong backers,he also did a bit of private laying at the course so was pretty well known to the books back then,in 81 at the festival he layed a big treble i use to remember the first two i cant now but the 3rd was little owl in the gold cup,so news got around about this bet now my pal did plenty on the bet but nowhere near as much as the punter won,but that was unknown to gillie who sent him a blank cheque with a note saying this is to help you out if you need any help settle up when things pick up. |
By:
good night ronnie i posted he went 3s the dead heat christ he bet even better than i thought.
By:
dave i think to make it work you have to be good on the stool aswell as the modern day punters havnt got a clue what you have on the board especially in the summer.
By:
hell yeah jimnast ya cant just stand quietly and hope to take money ... you have to educate and bully them at the same time .nigh on impossible south of the trent and too many six the field races in the summer !!
By:
JIMNAST - ANOTHER STORY ABOUT GILLIE...WHEN HE WAS A YOUNG FELLA,HE GOT TO WORK ONE OF THESE 'CAN YOU KNOCK THE CANS DOWN WITH THREE THROWS' TYPE OF STALLS IN BLACKPOOL....HIS BANTER WAS THAT GOOD , HE WORKED SEVEN DAYS A WEEK AND REFUSED THE OFFER OF ANY BREAKS HE WAS MAKING THAT MUCH MONEY !
By:
he would be good at that.
By:
All nice stories about Gillie but in the end he topped himself.
