When the new Channel 4 Racing team assemble for the first time at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day, the most gaping hole will not be the seat vacated by John McCririck but the one that John Francome quietly slipped out of the moment it was announced his present employer, Highflyer, had lost the contract.

After 27 years on our televisions Francome, 60, will cover his last King George VI Chase on Boxing Day and will hang up his microphone at Newbury on Saturday.
For the second time in his life Francome, the self-deprecating man with the Midas touch, the quick wit, the dash of devilment and no shortage of opinions, has quit something at which he has been a natural.
At Chepstow in April 1985 he took jump racing by surprise when he ‘retired’ after being briefly hung-up in the saddle. At that stage he had been the most successful jump jockey in history with 1,138 winners. In life, as in riding, timing is everything and again he has left racing wanting more.
“It doesn’t seem anything like 27 years,” he said reflecting on his role as a pundit. “I worked for a great team, the people behind the scenes like the electricians, riggers as much as anyone. I don’t care whether you’re a rocket scientist or a dustman as long as you’re good company, that’s the main thing.
“You might say I’ve got out on my own terms, others will say I jumped before I was pushed! It says a lot for how lucky I’ve been to go into two jobs, one with Fred Winter and his headlad, Brian Delaney, and the same with Andrew Franklin and John Fairley [Highflyer’s executive producers].
“I’ll miss giving my six pence worth on something interesting that’s happened. You can say what people at home what to know and I’ve always been a more than a little opinionated. I’ll miss our production meetings before racing most, you could make a comedy series about them, and for me it was just like travelling to the races when I was riding, it was an extension of being in the weighing room.”
Though he has not got anything specific to do in ‘retirement’ you can rest assured the grass will never grow under his feet. Current projects include building a new barn for his tenant, the trainer Clive Cox.
“I’ve got things to do and something will crop up,” he said and you know with Francome that something will.
Poet, a good flat horse he bought and had gelded because it was too much of a character to ever become a stallion, won first time out over hurdles at Newbury earlier in the week. He still rides out and schools horses, he has bought a JCB and he has taken over as president of the Injured Jockeys Fund from the late Lord Oaksey with whom he shared the small screen for a number of years.
“I never think I’m 60,” he admitted looking not a pound heavier than he was when he retired from the saddle. “I’m sure there’ll come a time when I can’t jump something or don’t want to but I schooled a couple of yaks this morning and loved it.”
He is not a man who would own a horse for the sake of it. “I took a chance on Poet,” he explained. “I’ve no desire to have it run in my colours. The only way we could get it near a pole to start with was corner it in the indoor school and put poles all around it, then he had to walk over them to get out. All the lads said he wouldn’t jump and yet at Newbury on Wednesday he jumped like a rabbit.”
Recalling his great friend Oaksey, he said: “We only had two things in common, a love of horses and a big head size. I forgot my helmet going racing one day and went round every jockey to see if I could get their’s to fit and was getting to the point that I wasn’t going to be able to ride when I tried on John’s. I rather fear his head had more in it than mine. His head was large for storing things, mine was large because I was too big for my boots.”
In his previous incarnation his King George victories came on Wayward Lad in 1983 and Burrough Hill Lad a year later. “Wayward Lad beat Fifty Dollars More, trained by Fred Winter. Though I was disappointed for Fred I’d been jocked off by the horse’s owner Sheikh Ali Abu Khamsin so it gave me great pleasure, a bit of icing on the cake to beat him.
“Burrough Hill Lad beat Combs Ditch a short-head and until the outcome of the photo was announced I have it in my mind that Jenny Pitman was ready to bollock me, though I don’t know why. Combs Ditch was a good horse on his day.”
If Francome’s departure from television is anything like the secretly organised drinks party earlier this month to celebrate his 60th – he said he would have “preferred to have sat down and watched Countryfile” – he will want to go without fanfare. If Newbury is abandoned it would probably suit him even better.
If you look at Dr Feelgood's thread you'll notice he certainly wasn't the worst tipster on C4 by any means ... As Tucho said "Be careful what you wish for"

Thankfully i dont watch C4 'love Ins' anymore for me , the 'personalities' were bigger than the sport on the show which extends right across the media nut TML was one of the worst trend setters. In fairness Franks would offer up a few decent selections.. but he gave every horse a chance and that it what you are NOT looking for...And very much chairman of The Jockeys Union...Being bent when he was riding (OK not all of the time ) he cannot bring himself to critcise jocks in any way shape of or form which is patently ridiculous and undermines his credibilty as a so called pundit

have this picture in the back of my mind of the likes of taylor, segal, melish, yifter, willourghby etc pouring over the weights and measures all week before a big handicap hurdle or chase, and francome appears on a sat morning with his fav line 7lbs nothing just 1 good jump,

Too true. I'd rather listen to Francome than any other presenter/pundit/analyst on terrestrial tv.
I truly dread the new line up on Ch4 with Balding topping the list - accompanied by the abjectly poor Persaud.

That was to FFF about listening to him off-air too.
I'd buy Francome a drink (non-alcoholic, as he doesn't imbibe) any time - I wouldn't pass a peanut to the monstrous Balding.

Of all the racing pundits I would want to walk the plank John Francome would have been very low on the list, shame he has gone really when the likes of that odious Persad is still around.

There is absolutely no competition between John and Rishi; it's a no-brainer. The only 'Doubles' that Rishi should get involved with are those ones in Trinidad; delicious as they are! His racing knowledge is limited, lacks experience. I hope that we haven't seen the last of John on TV after this month.

typical forum shoite anyone retiring or dying suddenly becomes the oracle, any chance of putting up any threads from 12 months ago which tell of francomes legendary status as a pundit, thanks in advance, if it helps theres plenty about him on the moaning line thread describing him as a useless chucking idiot,

Never sold out, always called it as he saw it, never worried about what he might lose out on personally by actually telling the truth, never cared if his own view differed to the self serving sheep in the press room.
Compare that to the bookmaker owned, integrity-lite, truth evading career freeloaders who are largely following him, and the future is only going to offer us synchronised back-slapping, mendacity and commercially driven exploitation, imho...

the way you lot talk you,d think he was the eamon dunmphy of the weighing room ,a part from a pot at dettori which was an open goal please give us a list of the people he,s knobbled in the last 27 years, shouldnt take long

Somewhere on Youtube might still be the video of an Irish Cheltenham preview where Francs got into a row with Ted Walsh and the other local racing worthies when discussing that year's Irish Good Thing, Dunguib -- "He can't jump!"
Of all jockeys turned pundits, only two were good judges, only two worth listening to, and we have somehow contrived to lose them both in this hamfisted change of broadcasters: Carson and Francome.

if you wanna listen to Franks..then i dread to think what your P and L is like...lazy punter who just got by on his one liners is not what you watch an allegedly informative racing programme for.

my feeling about his career as a pundit is that he could have been really, really good if he had done some homework/studying
i always got the impression he turned up and winged it
i do agree there are far worse, as mentioned above.

@Happy Valley -- you are probably right about Francome winging it on the day but unlike many of his critics, I think that homework would have been a bad thing. What Francome gave me was an expert view of aspects of a day's racing I cannot easily see for myself on television: conformation, demeanour, raceriding and so on. I do not need him to read the formbook because Jimbo does that (and so do I).
Still, soon Francome will be gone and we'll have Micky Fitz to tell us whether Nicky Henderson fancies his runner, and whatever else it is the man does.

Respect as a jockey although not always a punters friend as far I remember, he could beat a fancy with an inferior horse, one of the few jockeys that could do that. My biggest wins with him were Brown Chamberlin in the Sun All and the Hennessey both backed around 7/1 as far I can remember.
As a pundit he was interesting to listen to on occasions but honestly I can't understand those that think he was a good tipster.

Comes across as arrogant and not interested in the ordinary punter
Never known him tip a winner to the great unwashed but no doubt secured the best prices for himself by putting everyone away
He seems a bit shocked that he has been ejected from the gravy train
Good riddance to him

IMO John was one of the very few jockeys that looked a natural when he made the transition from riding to racing pundit on tv. I haven't watched Ch4 racing or heard JF since RUK became available, but I see that that they have now signed Mick Fitzgerald up as one of the pundits; that just beggars belief.

very good tipster for his bets on the morning line the thread on here about the betting tips on the morning line shows him in profit over the long term you cant ask for much more.

He may have been a good jockey but he talks through his quarters. Prime example came as him and Jimbo discussed Barnet Fair's galloping riderless down the track at Ascot in July. Francome expressed the view that this actually increased the likelihood of the horse winning because it was a good pipe-opener.

Whatever you thought of the old set up I will be amazed if the New one is not a disaster, a longer programme during racing with the same amount of racing shown, in other words I expect there will be loads of utter drivel in the coming months to fill in the gaps, its easy to criticise but would it not be better to s l a g of the old regime once the the new have proved their worth.

i dont get it a lot say he is a awful tipster but the facts are he is a good profitable tipster on morning line bets, if you are talking about general comments before a race then they are not tips just observations from someone who is employed to give them

I really liked him. He wasn't really there for his tipping so much as for the occasional quips and the stories that he was able to tell. You've got to remember that the C4 lot are there for a Joe Public that want different things from the kind of seasoned form studiers that you probably get on betfair.

For someone so 'opinionated' he found it very difficult to form an opinion about paddock negatives despite it being his job for many years. Just another pundit making sure he does not offend his buddies rather than do the job properly.

good on yer John, you dont need this comedy show. you can concentrate more on worthwhile things in the game, rather thah the shower of **** that is Ch 4 racing.

Think Francs will be sorely missed. Best thing about him was the fact he would always be looking for a value bet, an outsider, worth an interest. Think this approach is of far more value than Jim McGrath explaining why some AOB hotpot is the best bet of the day at Evens.

actually sad to see him go started following racing seriously about the time he joined the show seems a decent bloke who doesn't take himself too seriously only gripe was his paddock negatives, never once put up a horse that looked unfit etc
be lucky

What a life he's had. at the Chester meeting they all stayed at the best hotel in town, ate and drink like kings, did a few hours work on the tele and had a cracking weeks holiday, all payed for by the production company and on top of that they got paid. Best Jockey I've ever seen, it was like watching a show jumper clearing those big fences. Love the story how he through his misses out of his house for having a affair, don't know if it was true but it did sound like something he would do. Great guy he'll be missed by all his fans.
