A lovely piece on WAS.
I knew him quite well, a lovely man.
His nephew Peter Cheeseborough trained for a while, after Arthurs death.
Arthur's daughter was (perhaps still is) connected with John Wade who trains.
The bloodstock agent Gill Richardson was Arthur's secretary.
A lovely man.

Tudenham made its debut in the Scarborough stakes at York on May 10 1972. Paul Cook was on board. A few different jockeys rode it later.

Huperade was trained by George Owen that day, W.A. trained it earlier in its career, both the first two were owner ridden. Just found the day in old form book, Soul Music beat a 4/9 of Dickensons in the last.

Sparrow - the weights for the 1987 Grand National came out on Tuesday 3rd February. There were 98 entries with 5 horses each allocated top weight of 12 stone. The Thinker, then a nine-year-old, was given 11 stone six pounds. In the event, it didn't run, partly because of the drying ground. If you want to see all the weights, I'll post it.

Thanks whitwhitlaw, I always thought it had been given less weight and came out of the National due to it's Gold Cup exertions.

What were Chris Collins' colours exactly? I remembner them as pretty much all white - though I probably only saw them on a b/w TV. I think he owned (and rode) Titus Oates when it was with WA as a young hunter-chaser. It then went to GWR for a then record sum for a chaser (going from Cussons to Cussins?).

Hello blackbarn. Yes I was thinking dark cap, but my memory was vague. Not surprised at the dark cuffs, but bit more surprised by the dark collar.
By:

When: 05 Feb 13 10:17
Mine too Ged.  I had to look it up, and my recollection was all white.  Re cuffs, not certain but I think that, even in the days when you were much freer than today in your colour choice,  you still had to have MATCHING collar and cuffs.
By:

Ged - forget the bit about matching collar and cuffs.  Total B ollx, only got to page 3 of the B and H Colours book and found a blue collar with no cuffs

From Dec 1998..

ALBERT NEAVES, the former Kent trainer whose best-known horse was the front-running chaser Certain Justice, has died at the age of 87, seven days before his 60th wedding anniversary.

Neaves trained on a small scale on his 300-acre fruit and arable farm at Eastling for more 39 years, until retirement at the end of 1996.

Apart from Certain Justice, the winner of 26 races who was bought for 600gns and has a chase named in his honour at Fontwell's March fixture, Neaves will be best remembered for Do Or Die, who won the George Duller Hurdle at Cheltenham, and sprinter Al l Promise, whom the trainer purchased for 90gns.

Bob McCreery, the former leading amateur who rode Certain Justice for three seasons, said yesterday that Neaves was "a true and honest gentleman, with a good eye for a cheap horse".

McCreery recalled that when Certain Justice was nearing the end of his career, Neaves was fined by the Folkestone stewards for allegedly schooling the horse in public.

McCreery said: "The accusation was a utter nonsense, because Albert was as straight as they come. Certain Justice was always doing his best."

After the inquiry, a furious McCreery told Admiral Ffrench Blake, Folkestone's senior steward, that he was not fit to sit on the panel, which resulted in the rider being reported to Jockey Club headquarters for "being rude" to an official. He was subsequently banned for one month.

Neaves leaves a wife, Rosemary, and two children, Bob and Mary. The funeral will take place on Monday at Eastling Parish Church at 1.30pm. Family flowers only. Donations to the Injured Jockeys' Fund.

Reculver - Great memory of the colours. Nearly!. They were Blue, Brown Square and Gold sleeves collar and cap.

Remember Neaves' Copperless winning a Hunter Chase at Plumpton ridden I think by "Ratkins" around 1972. Iron man Joe Guest used to ride for him too.

workrider - there's a link here, posted by WHITWHITLAW (much) earlier on this thread:-

http://community.cdnbf.net/community.betfair.com/user/whitwhitlaw/4454d811cc4651656e821212877fb396.png?v=157200

It's a scanned image of the article that Brough Scott wrote in the Times the day after Terry Biddlecombe's last ride (on Amarind in the Cathcart). It's an example, I think, of how well Brough could write, and conveys very well what Terry was like, and how he was thought of.

If you get the image up, you can make it bigger, if necessary, by pressing CTRL+.

I see the 1-2 in the 1000gns were owned by "The Aga Khan" and "The Aly Khan" resp. I didn't realise they owned at the same time, or that the son was known as "The Aly" rather than "Prince Aly".

Was A.Carson related to Willie?
