fair enough grey shark, you cant expect 10,000 to turn up at each meeting ,the point i was trying to make was that hereford were i am an annual member is one off the few racecourses left where the vast majority of the people who go ,actually go for the horse racing, which are the 7 you have not yet been to ?

if you do manage to get to hereford before it closes make sure you pay a visit to barrels in the town center, you will struggle to find a better pub anywhere, the indian next door isnt bad either. |

I will miss Hereford, i enjoy my trips down that neck of the woods..

Jim , obviously i know 10,000 can't go , it's all very nice saying there real racing fans but sadly there isn't enough to make it viable and few new ones coming aboard so something has to give .
catt, chester , flos , ripon , cart , newc, carlisle are the ones , think you've done them all , iirc. |
By:
Thanks for the reply jimnast.
By:
I'll make sure to check them out when I go jimnast, it's been a few years since I looked around the town centre so I'll prob make a day of it.

I know this will go down like a bowl of cold sick with you lot but I can see the company's point about Hereford. I have been to all UK and a significant amount of those in Ireland and France and Hereford is a dump. The facilities are no better than a country track in New Zealand (for which entry is free) and the prize money is terrible. I was there one sunday and the entire prize money on offer that day was less than that on offer for an ok trotting race in France. The place needs major investment and would you invest that in a place you don't own and have only a short leasehold? We have some very go-ahead racecourse owners particularly Musselburgh, where a grotty run down old tip was transformed into a superb course. Perhaps they could take over Hereford but they would want some serious guarantees from the Council.
As regards Folkestone, I have a feeling Arena are trying to put pressure on the planning authorities. Judging what has happened in the past in these planning stand-offs, there will be a compromise with say 50% of the housing they are bidding for. To be honest, I can't see that the present road infrastructure could handle an 800 house development. I do hope Folkestone is saved |

carlisle has improved enormously since it closed for foot and mouth, cartmel great for buissness but not my cup of tea as racing fan, newcastle to big for the ammount who turn up other than 2 days a year, ripon pretty around the back but very poor viewing, chester great day out at the chester vase fixture, ffos las a bit plain really, catterick poor in every way although worth the visit just to see how bad the outside toilets are. |

hereford membership 100 quid a year with fantastic recipicals. canthinkofaclevername fair post that i really hope your right about folkestone. |
By:
Jim , thats similar to my opinions on those tracks , however the travelling , rip off prices mean i simply can't be bothered to go , when i have it all here in my house and tea works out about 5p a cup etc.
By:
£100 membership , now even i think thats value , how many members last season ?
By:
i can understand that grey shark i have friends who take that view, but i cant go more than 2 days without been on a racecourse, wheather it be working or for pleasure i just love seeing the horses and the diversity of or tracks and whilst not been keen on the likes of catterick and huntingdon i would not want them to close.the cost of entrance has to be addressed silver rings at market rasen and newton abbot are now way over the top, tatts at many places midweek are to expensive,i dont agree with free entry you get the wrong sort in,but a fiver midweek would be fair, and a tenner at the weekend,i accept the big days should be more expensive although goodwood and cheltenham are ott.
By:
re the hereford membership i dont know how many, i know roo of the forum has one.
By:
The every other day but saturday sport must be priced down.
I have warwick on my doorstep, but refuse to pay 20 odd quid to see all weather to sub standard racing on watered grass. The place is an open air tomb. Different atmosphere altogether there in the winter, but still the place is keeping people away by the outrageous prices. |
By:
I'm in the same boat as Grey Shark with only half a dozen or so left.
Do you really think Catterick is the worst? I didn't mind it at all. There are plenty worse in my opinion. The Folkestone closure has left me in a bit of a quandry. Do I make the effort to go before it closes or do I accept that the list of tracks to visit falls by one? |

jumps only membership at warwick is good value, decent recipricols also, agree 100 percent about the flat there and i am not anti flat. |

you should make every effort you can to get to folkestone, you will be surprised how nice it is,hythe 3 miles away is the place to stay there is and excellent thai on the high street called thai tom. |
By:
You should write a book about the racecourses Jimnast, where to stay, best eateries, pubs etc.
Would be a good read for the lifer horse racing fans. |
By:
I think I should make the effort.
I suppose it has always been one that is a bit awkward to get to so there have always been alternatives that I've gone to instead. Out of interest jimnast which ones do you prefer? I always find in interesting to hear other what others who have been to most/all of them say. |
By:
Don't know if you ever visited the star and garter in Leamington Spa on your visits to Warwick Jimnast?
But the great pub sadly closed down last week. |
By:
Wasnt there an old book called "Travelling the Turf" sometime in the 70s??
By:
i've got one from the late 80s
By:
and there we go back to one of my original points that there are very few under 30's interested enough to go racing , be ripped off , understand how form and everything works.
30 plus years ago there were fewer things to gamble on and so racing appealed more , now there is so much choice of ways to gamble , things will have to change . |
By:
Most of the places will have changed a bit then Squares

jmimnast is correct
get to folkestone because once its gone you will be sorry you missed the opportunity I will always be pleased I got to lanark and teeside park before they closed. |

Regarding the crowds at Hereford, based on the published figures from Levy Board website, they've staged ten meetings this year and the total attendance for all ten is 13,665.
All the midweek meetings in January and March had around 800 turning up - and those figures include annual members. |

the whole game means so much to me,the courses the horses are top of my list, this morning i woke up feeling really happy and looking forward to watching the opening ceramony tonight ,the news of two of our racecourses are to close has totally spoilt the day for me and has overshadowed tonight. |

theres many i really like ,i always think something happens at fontwell its always a great day out,the rowley mile produces fantastic racing, ascot in the winter is fantastic its all class the racing and the facilties, warwick jumps, kelso and folkestone are all great places to go racing. |
By:
Most of us used to go a great deal more
its just A-There seems a lot of dross midweek and B trasport/Petrol/Admission/Eating isnt very cheap, and thats what people dont get about Horseracing when they compare it to other leisure activitiesYou dont go to the Royal Albert Hall and do Two Hundred trying to win the fifty you spent to get in ![]() |
