Smackover was still listed as being with Ian Walker as a 7-yr-old in 1979.
I will investigate further. |

Onloooker, is it sheer coincedence that May be some time, Snow Angel and Dont take me alive win on the same night!

Same SMACKOVER -
He moved to Bryan in either 181 0r 192 - when aged 7 - I typed the wrong age earlier. Stewart's Rise also listed in 1982 - as a 5-yr-old. Bryan had 31 in training at Hopwas Hill. |

31 horses in training and most of them selling platers!

Just read all this, brought back some great memories.
Anyone remember John Meacock. All his horses had very weird names for the time, things like Qasar-ul-haq. Nowadays they'd be commonplace. |
|
By:
Not 100% sure but I think Smackover won at Goodwood summer 1979 as a 4-y-o
Sam |
|
By:
John Meacock was an ex-Cavalryman.
Not sure if he had some connection with the Persian Lancers - Hence the horses having names like Vakil-Ul-Mulk, and the like. |
|

I think Walker trained a handicapper called Right So in the late 70's.

Discussing those Wildenstein horses for Cecil...I can't believe we never mentioned our old friend Belmont Bay again
![]() |
|
By:
He did indeed Pauli Right So won a few for him - the one we had with him ran against Niniski in the Hastings Maiden at Newmarket and again in the Glasgow Stakes at York (I think)as a 3-y-o
Sam |
|
By:
Thought Belmont Bay was purchased by Charles St George although I'm not sure
Sam |
|
By:
Sam - now I'm not as certain as I thought

Googled and it looks like it was Wildenstein after all - I'm still insisting it won the Newbury Spring Cup first run for Cecil

You're right Sam. Belmont Bay did win the Newbury Spring Cup under 10-0 on his first run for Cecil.

A Newbury handicap rings a bell with me Sam...and that could ONLY be the Spring Cup.
I wouldn't know if it was his seasonal debut, or indeed his debut for Henry. Speaking of 'Ring The Bell' does anyone remember an Aussie/NZ acquisition for Henry of that name? Not exactly trumpeted like So You Think but useful, despite not hitting the heights. That might have been a Garo Varian horse like Critique...help Onlooker ![]() |

I got something right then Pauli - think it was around 14/1 that day and again I think I had it in an each-way double with Current Gold also around 14/1 in the Scottish National.
Something strange happened in that race? Sam |

He did indeed Pauli Right So won a few for him - the one we had with him ran against Niniski in the Hastings Maiden at Newmarket ------------------ What an amazing coincidence This thread was started with a question asking for the name of a Henry Cecil horse - who 'ran out' on the bend in a race at Haydock in 1979. As you will see - I found the horse, which was MYSTIFICATEUR. I then typed out, and posted, it's career runs - right at the beginning of this thjread. On that Career Listing - I show that MYSTIFICATEUR made his débutin ... The Hastings Maiden at Newmarket- won by Niniski. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Niniski, wasn't that Herns, Lady beaverbrook maybe.

Yes

Onlooker - I posted a while back in this same thread that we were accidentally going around in circles
![]() Can you tell us anything about Ring The Bell? Who owned him? I think I remember seeing him with some strange tack...possibly even a bell on his bridle? ![]() Am I making that up? Motley - you're right about Niniski |

By:
Didn't ring the bell come over from aus, or New Zealand.

Sorry naval, just noticed you have already posted he was NA/AUS import.

BELMONT BAY
Won 3 times from 5 outings - as a 2-yr-old in 1979 for Ian Walker As a 3-yr-old - He started off by finishing 3rd in the Free Handicap - and then won a further 3 races from 5 more races, including 2 valuable Newmarket Handicaps. He was still trained by Ian Walker - and owned by C R SMITH. As a 4-yr-old - for Henry Cecil He won the Newbury Spring Cup (first time out) carrying top-weight of 10st- followed by the Phillip Coynes Trophy at Leicester, The Lockinge, back at Newbury, and then the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot. Unplaced in the Sussex and the Moulin - before wiing a 7 furlong Conditions at Goodwood - and finished his career with a 4th place in the Prix de La Foret at Longchamp. |

Is it a bit of a coincidence onlooker - so Mousehold was in the race too - think there was at least one other good one that came out that race and one called Bananas Foster might have ran in it.

|
By:
Onlooker you mentioned that Belmont Bay ran 3rd in the Free Handicap in 1980 - that was the race won by Moorestyle wasn't it?

Grand Canyon I vaguely recall from mid 70s
|
|
By:
I think Grand Canyon might have been the one that started it all.
he ran at Cheltenham and Aintree I believe. |
|
By:
Re Ring The Bell (NZ), not sure what his Uk record was like (Someone will know!) but he won the Avondale Guineas in NZ before coming here. He was the sire of National winner Lord Gyllene.
|
|
By:
Grand Canyon was owned by a guy called Basil Samuel, and won The Colonial Cup. Was entered for The Grand National, but ended up injured when he came over. Owner had couple of other runners in it though.
|
|
By:
seem to remember Grand Canyon running at aintree, but thought it was a hurdle race.
|
|
By:
He definitely ran here Outpost, but don't know about a hurdle race at Aintree. He did run in the King George at Kempton though.

Grand Canyon made his debut over fences in England in the SGB Handicap Chase at Ascot in December 1978. He won in a course record time but sustained an injury during the race which forced him to miss the second half of the season. He reappeared in the SGB again in December 1979 but was pulled up. His final race of the 79-80 season was the King George where he fell five out.

I have Grand Canyon as being owned by D W (Pat) Samuel, who also had horses later with Nicky Henderson. Other NZ imports he owned were Navigation, The Tramp and Paemako Prince.
|
|
By:
Blimey - it's that Pat Samuel - he owned Captain Christy as well!
