I was at Towcester yesterday evening and watching 'real time' and
ATR delayed pictures at the same time and it looked impossible to me,
the ATR pictures seemingly about 100 yards behind. Any opinions ?

Yawn. Had this debate about a month ago and the answer was a resounding yes because I do it and I make good money doing it.

I think you need to rephrase your question to:-

"Does everyone who can't make it pay think that NO ONE can make it pay?"
Report kenilworth May 23, 2012 10:25 AM BST
How do you avoid the obvious pitfalls, for instance the
first signs of niggling ?
-------------------------
RHM, despite having already covered this subject, you fail
to read my question properly, for instance, I didn't say i
don't make it pay, in fact I didn't say I actually play in
running, so when you have stifled your yawn, close the thread.
Report Red Hiney Monkey May 23, 2012 10:30 AM BST
1) Your post was entitled 'Does anyone seriously think they can win  'in running' with ATR pics?'

Can't see how i've 'failed' to read it. Yes they seriously THINK they can, and yes they seriously DO.

2) Then you state that it looks 'impossible to you.'

Well, this clearly indicate you don't/can't make it pay imo.

Its just another regurgitated question on the same theme thats been covered many a time before, always with the same outcome.

do your homework, find the run styles, in a nutshell back the nigglers and lay the travelers.

RHM, I'll be clear, I don't bet in running,
and I hope that might be clear enough, or maybe not.

Rocky
, I would imagine those watching 'real time' racing
may also have the ability to spot the nigglers and the
travelers just as well, don't you think ?

most ppl who win IR using atr pics have the common sense to keep quiet about it
Report Red Hiney Monkey May 23, 2012 10:56 AM BST
You're trying to make smart alec comments like 'and I hope that might be clear enough, or maybe not,' to someone who has, in all probability - based on the the national average - a higher IQ than yours. Please don't patronise me because I can run smart alec comments all day long.

If you don't bet in running what difference does it make to you?! What's more, why start a thread asking a question thats already been answered before?

Further to you opening post, 'any opinions?'

It's not a matter of opinion whether 'Does anyone seriously think they can win  'in running' with ATR pics?' It's simple fact. As black and white as that. YES.

I think you will find the majority of real time players are more interested in using the time difference to their advantage.

RHM - do you use ATR or other sources?
Report Red Hiney Monkey May 23, 2012 11:05 AM BST
elise, let me explain, its simple maths, just like betting. The average is 100. Its a fact.  I would have to only have an IQ of 101 to be in the 51st percentile which means, ever so slightly, I would have a higher probability of having a higher IQ than any chosen person at random in the UK. I am well above the average in recent tests, therefore, in PROBABILITY, I have a higher IQ than kenilworth.

Bilbo, I use ATR, RUK and BF Video depending. BF Video is the first choice for speed but is far from reliable, as you know, so I'm forced to use ATR sometimes.

Report bilbobaggins May 23, 2012 11:14 AM BST
Fair enough - you just have to be more alert with ATR pics, I know that but they are not ideal to use. BF video for me.  It's strange that someone( kenilworth) who doesn't bet in-running even raised the question in the first place.

I backed a horse at NewAbb the other day, in-running, while watching BF LiveVideo. The horses had just jumped the 2nd last and I backed the horse in close-up 3rd - about a second later the market suspended!!!! So they must have been about a hurdle behind.

Wee eck and i do not see eye to eye, probably due to the fact he is, as im told, approaching a grand old age and his views on punting are so outdated it's compelled me to block his posts ever since I posted a profitable laying system on here some time ago.

His one-dimensional views bring to the conlusion no racing systems ever work and always end up in loss.

This forum is so amusing.

If you do lots of homework, dodge pots, grinders etc etc you can play in running using ATR.The only way though would be to leave bets in the system, trying to do it from the ATR pics you are watching would be impossible
Report mousaka May 23, 2012 3:43 PM BST
You can win using atr...but you must obviously take a view early in the race..if you know enough about racing...YES it can be done !!
Report mousaka May 23, 2012 3:57 PM BST
God no...that would be a cardinal sin...NEVER leave unmatched bets ..that would be the way to the poor house !!...or back to work !!
Report BARNSTER May 23, 2012 4:51 PM BST
so basically all your doing is making sure your selection is doing what its supposed to be doing in the first few furlongs of the race b4 you put your bet on,the trouble with that is, thats factored into the bsp and you usually have to take shorter odds for the privalage of making sure you get away ok which in the long term means your going to win or lose about the same, which makes ir on atr a waste of time.

It is a bit surreal to watch in running prices move quickly when watching a horse that is apparently only in the pack drop to 1.1. I do use in running but only to a strict policy. If I have backed a horse at decent odds I put up a lay at half of the BSP and select keep. The in running decision is taken before the race starts so the delay is irrelevant. Why do I put up a lay? Because I seem to get a lot of decent priced bets that are in contention a furlong out and get beaten so a lay is taken 80% of the time allowing me to break even on those races.
Report longbridge May 24, 2023 9:40 AM BST
sageform - if you are selecting 'keep' you are placing your lay bet pre-play, so how do you know what BSP is in order to have the bet at half BSP?  Apologies if I am missing something here.
Report sageform May 24, 2023 10:38 AM BST
I mean the price that I backed it at (which as I usually leave it fairly last minute) is close to BSP and sometimes I choose BSP for the pre race bet as it seems to me that 80% of BSPs are above the last traded price.
Report longbridge May 24, 2023 12:51 PM BST
Thanks sageform.

I did a test on a (actually, for once, winning) strategy I had in 2018 or so - placed 2/8 win/place at a price and also at BSP and tracked the P/L for each.  BSP came out marginally ahead, which shows how shrewd I am not at taking prices...

(not relevant to this discussion, but I also tracked how much commission I paid as a fraction of winnings which led to my complete lack of sympathy for those complaining about PC)
