Take the point about all the money in it these days and the possiblilty the Olympic stadium could become a Mosque in 40 years time(or less) but still looking forward to it. |

The Olympics is the greatest sporting event in the world. It's the only time it will be held in this country in my lifetime. I cannot wait to go and be part of it and find it strange that people can be so against it, apart from maybe those living in London who have no interest and will be inconvenienced. If you have no interest don't tune in but I'm looking forward to being part of the event.
It's ridiculous to say it's better to stay at home and watch it on tv as you'll get a better view. You could say that about most sporting events, football, horse racing, darts etc. I enjoy watching them all on tv but it's much better when you're there. As for the competitors representing their countries, i do agree that they're not doing it for their country. However, whilst money is a factor in some of the sports for the vast majority of competitors it's the prestige of competing, reaching finals and winning medals. I won't be cheering on everyone just because they're British. For example any of our drug cheats i hope will fail miserably. However, if you watch sport you get drawn to certain people so i for one would be elated if Jess Ennis, Mo Farah, Rebecca Adlington, Chris Hoy and a number of others managed to win gold. I certainly don't believe any of them are in it for the money and sponsorship. |

Hibby, I'm talking about those 4 i mentioned. I just don't believe that heptathletes, distance runners, cyclists and swimmers enter their sports to make money. Compared to other sports the rewards are relatively small. I'm sure all 4 do well but when they started the motivation would have been to win medals/events.
Watchit, I got my tickets through the normals channels in the first ballot. I applied for lots of tickets and managed to get 4. (2 tickets for 2 events). |

If the British people were allowed to vote on whether they wanted multiple billions spent on Olympics or upgrading hospitals , upgrading schools or into paying for more police etc. , i suspect the overated , overpriced olympics would only get a small percentage of the vote .... a total waste

Hibby, i think you're missing the point of sport. Most people participate to achieve goals, to become the best, or just to take part. I have no idea about the finances of people like Mo Farah and Rebecca Adlington but I'd be extremely confident they did not enter their sports to earn money. I know you love the darts and I assume other sports too. The Olympics clearly does not interest you but i find it surprising that you call it garbage. Many people would say the same about darts. Imo they would be wrong as it's one of the great sports to watch for drama. I guess it's each to their own. For me the Olympics is the greatest sporting event on earth and I'm going to enjoy it from start to finish, particularly on the 2 days i'll be in the Olympic stadium.

Wife had tickets for synchronised swimming, through a c0ck up they oversubscribed by 10,000, got a call to change them to whatever we wanted so now have tickets for an athletics finals session, main event that night being the mens 400 metres.

Don't understand the fascination some have with the Olympics to be honest.
For me, 99% of it is desperately boring. Take out the sprint finals and it's like watching the entire production footage of the Lord of the Rings, just to see the last 5 minutes. The other thing that gets me is that every four years there seems to be even more events than in times gone by. I'm personally looking forward to the shirt ironing and cake decorating contests this year though. |

i don't love darts asparagus...i've had a few bets on it but i very rarely watch it tbh...
if you love the olympics then that's good but it's not for me. when these people were youngsters and took the sport up i do believe they took it up because they enjoyed doing the sport but i do also believe that once these people get a bit older they do have £ signs in their eyes and it's a combination of self-glory and £ which drives them on. if ALL you got for winning a gold medal was a gold medal and NO financial reward...would these people still be doing their sport or would they be working in their local bookies or working for the royal mail or milkmen or milkwomen...? there's NOWT wrong with making £...but what i don't like is when people come on the telly and say things like 'i want to win a gold medal for MY country and the people'....i find that very irritating indeed and it makes me sick tbh... most people do it for THEMSELVES...why don't they just say so...? |

Morning hibby hope you have got rid of all those bugs that were bothering you and i don't mean the forum ones, think it is time i found somewhere warm and dry it's been p*****g down in leith all night agree with you on the olympic's,used to be great when everyone had pride in their country but those day's have gone.

i was advised to drink more water and it seems to have helped me feel a bit better...still seem to pick up colds at the drop of a hat tho. hopefully the sun will shine on LEITH on may 19th dod...??? |

They were a cracking team used to stand up there in easter road in rain snow just to watch them,you were always confident they would win in those days quite phenomenal.

they didn't win the trophies they should have by the sound of things. why was that...? did they bottle it ? they were surely as good as rangers or celtic back then... |

It's a long time to remember back pretty sure it was injury's they were being hacked badly on the park i think alex cropley broke his leg and was never the same, lack of strength in depth and not the financial clout of the big two did not help.

cropley and brownlie broke legs didn't they dod...? top team very good but the reserves / squad players weren't and they didn't have the £ to buy more decent players... shame that...they should have won a league title tbh... i distinctly remember walking up Leith Walk with my mum on both occasions celtic knocked in 6 at hampden in the mid 70's dod... that was a real sickener. |
