^ Absolutely Biscar - he should pay.  However what Stan James did was unacceptable and I think they owe all the punters involved a written apology.  To take (in some cases) large amounts of money from a customer's bank account without notice could have resulted in bank charges, missed mortgage payments/standing orders etc and could have had very serious consequences.  Bookmakers think they can act above the law - it is about time they are held accountable when they do so.

Sounds like you're trying to cover your desperately embarrassing incompetence bigdog - my niece has a law degree as well and if I needed legal advice I wouldn't go anywhere near her.

OP

Suggest lesson learnt here, is to keep a record of ever bet placed. So that at any time, you know what you've staked, any returns and therefore profit or loss.

Agree with Albert Square. Write back offering to pay back a few quid a week once they agree never to restrict your account. Would be interesting to see their response

If you'd had a winning bet you can bet your bottom dollar it would have been voided
and 'sorry your bet wasn't paid for.'
You couldn't win, so you shouldn't lose.

TT,the sooner the people who are responcible for that farce, get in trouble for letting that happen the better, its getting well beyond a joke, it did not happen as much in the past, i dont know if it has to do with the new systeems, that i beleave are part/close to the betting industry/bookmakers, and not independant like Extel.

a guy came into a bookies i was in the other day, put £100 on a dog race, watched it lose and left the shop. the bet didnt get put on in time according to the computer but the guy had already left the shop and he wasnt a regular. so thats £100 that the bookies have got that will probably NEVER be recovered because the guy thought he had lost, think of how many times this has happened and the money must be in the millions over the years. if his dog had won he would still have just got his money back.

What do you disagree with busvaldo?
BTW this stanjames has acted ILLEGALLY by going into his bank acount.
OP, tell em you are fining them the amount you owe them for their criminal actions.
By:
Busvaldo
When: 08 May 12 19:51
He owes 4k,semantics are irrelavent, legal costs will be more than the amount involved.

Just pay it and move on,simple stuff.
By:
John_Cherry
When: 08 May 12 19:54
lol semantics. If any bet had come to any serious amount the bookie would have tried every trick in the book to get out of it seeing as he hadn't paid for the bet. You KNOW they would. They've performed a criminal act to get their money, that shows you what their ethics are like.

I know the system that Stan james has and I knew that if not operated properly then the punter is not charged for his bets !!
However having had numerous accounts with them that immediately are closed with a winner I cannot comment on whether this is still the case !!
Banks seems to be a bit of a legal expert in these matters (bon viveur !) and maybe you should heed his advice.
If it was me I would tell them the only way is the highway between Gib and Spain.Your Bank has told you that it was an illegal chargeback and that would do for me.They would not dare to put you on a credit blacklist. How many more punters have not been charged ?
Rancid firm, rancid rock and the sooner they give the game up the better.....

aerobicengine, Not sure were you stand as regards the law today, i beleave it has changed, but in the past if you owed a bookmaker money you were not legally bound to pay, but, why dont you pay them, as in a good will guesture, Grin

Isn't this quite straightforward. All the stuff prior to them giving you the refund is irrelevant (water under the bridge) now they have given you the refund. However rancid and gibraltar based they are, and how badly they have previously behaved is, does not detract from the fact that you owe them for bets made. It is a simple did you? or didnt you?. Not sure of the sums involved but they'll probably bypass the Small Claims process and seek judgment in the County Court (better chance of recovering all their expenses at your expense).

Simply put - Pay if you owe, take them on if you don't

They will not take you to Court. There must be many who have not been charged for their bets and they cannot afford to take them all to task.Mickey Mouse outfit.I remember when they used to change their prices when I had a bet until I was banned.Plenty of Irish contacts though.......

Once again and I will speak for every punter out there......
They will not let you win.Your account will be closed down if you beat the sp..
Therefore if they have not charged you for losing bets do not pay.
If you had the audacity to win then your account would be no more. There is no longer any honour of paying your debts.Indeed if you can dodge paying such outfits then you should do so....

Leaving aside whether you owe or you don't, homefortea's entirely reasonable "moral'ish high ground" position has absolutely no relevance to your position.

If you don't believe me, pop into your local CAB and ask them to recommend a local solicitor who specialises in civil debt (they will have several!). Ask for a short (30 minute consulation) which will be at your cost and almost certainly worth it.

I firmly believe that you will find this a more authoritative source of factual information than THIS particular mine of losers and guessers (including meWink)
