You people saying "it happens", "it's racing" etc. are missing the point.

This race is made so dangerous by the conditions (types of fences, length of race) and the field size - things that could easily be changed to save much of the bloodshed.

Whether you bet in this race again is not I'm sure of any consequence to anyone.

Why you bother to state the bleeding obvious about the fact that horses have died is also nothing new to most of us.

If you really feel strongly about the National, dont waste our time on here.
Get off your arse and petition people, go to your MP, put yourself out there and do something about it.

Methinks your not passionate enough to do anything other than mouth off like many others.

Do something positive or hold your peace.

But this was on a different level and could easily be prevented

i know it is sad that two horses were killed in the national and it is a dangerous sport but just remember that a couple of weeks ago three horses died in a two mile flat race at the dubai carnival.

horses were born to run and many get injured in the fields at home what wil we suggest soon that we tie them up so they cannot move and so be safe.

again i say it is very sad to see any animals suffer or die for our enjoyment but quality of life is important to is it not.Love

BAN IT
Report steerforth April 15, 2023 6:52 PM BST
I suspect the OP is not alone, I felt a little uneasy myself. But his right not to participate is just that - his right. When it comes to calls for banning the race, I would take a different stance.
There is no defence when the arguement against is that horses' lives are being risked. No amount of platitudes about "5 star treatment" or teary eyed anthropomorphic gush will ever persuade one single anti to capitulate when the job they are bred and trained for carries one iota of risk. There is only one correct approach, for this issue as well as many others in our cancel culture century.
Tell them squarely and forthrightly, "This is what we do and we will continue to do it. Whilst we recognise that you, in your minority, do not believe that such activity should be permitted under law, we demand that you recognise and respect that we act responsibly in accordance with stipulated regulations. Furthermore we steadfastly refuse to accept that you, in that minority, have the right to disrupt or prevent us from doing what we do in such manner. Now please stand aside".
Unless we have the confidence to stand up for ourselves and our culture, we will sink further into the abject poverty of what it is to have a meaningful and diverse existence.

Jermaine do you eat meat of some sort,if you do then you should go to the slaughter house and watch the animals as they know what is happening some try to jump free and also struggle. That surely is more cruel they have no chance to live a full life, some are only 6 months to a year old when they should live years. If you do eat meat you are promoting this happening,I myself do eat some meat and think it is part of life, what would happen to these horses if they did not become racehorses, dog meat I presume. You cannot just say that the National is cruel due to the casualties, even on the flat horses are put down. But these horses are treated very well in their stables and well looked after, not queuing up up to get turned into dog meat,or left in a field with nothing to eat and having no Vet care.

McCririck said Synchronised should never have started the race having thrown McCoy and run loose, while Claire Balding in commentary just before the start said the horse 'didn't look up for it', appearing jittery when McCoy presented it to the first fence.

If Balding could see that from the commentary box, then you'd think McCoy must've known his mount was reluctant to race too. But then, being McCoy, perhaps he thought the horse was just being soft.

they need to take the speed out of the race over those first 2 or three fences.

When I was forced to play rugby at school back in the 80s - a game I utterly loathe - it wasn't uncommon for players to have ears half bitten off and eyes trod on deliberately in a ruck. As a tight-head prop, I was usually the one being trodden on. A game was played in almost absolute silence, only the two team captains being allowed to speak. Woe betide any other team member who said anything ; they'd get a swift whack around the head from one of the games masters, all of whom were total sadists. One of them thought it great fun to swerve his Lancia Delta at you as he tore down the school's driveway. He eventually moved to another school, where he was dismissed for throwing a child against the gym wall, triggering an epileptic fit. He finally found his niche, it seems, by joining the Met'.

I say this since years later I was chatting to a chap and his wife who coach young kids at rugby, and by the look on both their faces after I'd told them what it was like playing school rugby back when I did, they were both utterly appalled. As much as we hated it, we accepted it ; but that didn't make it right, and I know few people today who would think kids being brutalised in that way was acceptable, then or now.

Times change. Perhaps the Grand National isn't a sensible race to have in the 21st century, not just because of public attitudes towards the race, but also because of the simple fact that most horses these days are bred for speed, and are therefore not up to the still unique set of challenges that the National presents them with.

I do understand the sentiments of posters but I feel they are missing the point. The GN is probably the most iconic jumps race in the world and if the protestors manage to get it banned I feel the whole NH scene will be under considerable threat. The numbers of protestors would grow inexorably as a result of the GN being banned and they would make NH racing and possibly all horseracing impossible to manage.
Personally I never enjoyed watching yesterdays race but I do believe the whole hysterics of the situation, the time factor and the faster ground played into the protestors hands and they may even get some pleasure from that.
