I can remember the idea being to make a formal enclosure, under regulation.

Wasnot,The Downs is common land except for Derby week,thats how they come to charge the Travelling people for pulling their trailers on.I think it comes under the jurisdiction of Walton Council that week.

Not a major point. But surely the Hill will be classed as a "minor" enclosure so AGT fee will be the lower figure, i think a Fiver!

10 pitches short on the front row at cheltenham yesterday due to a horse auction at 530,a few plastic rails couldnt be moved nobody gave a f..k so how on earth can the hill be managed ?

Regarding applying for the Lonsdale,I was also in the Walton but have no recollection of being given an opportunity to go in the Lonsdale. |

Not the opportunity to go in there, allpoints, the chance of applying. I think we would have ended up on the waiting list so did not bother. Exact detail could be wrong, my brain is not what it was.

i have bet "on the hill" 12 times in the last 20 yrs so feel i am worthy of posting comment on this thread . i spoke to andrew boardly y'day and he is the agt represtative for the ring layouts etc on the hill going forward . he is to have a meeting at epsom at epsom on monday to discuss certain issues . there will be paint marks on the turf to identify the pitches with numbers on the plan for all 10 rings on the hill . seniority decided by the bidding process i'e highest bid pick 1 and so forth . it also seems that ONLY BOOKMAKERS who bet at the 2011 derby will be invited to tender for a pitch . having spoken to andrew pls let me reassure things are not as bad as they seem for what it is worth i will only be tendering the minimum bid £150 i think it would be crazy for anyone to bid any higher for the obvious reasons

Flash - interesting points. I agree that in many of the cases there is not much difference in pick position, but where there is an opportunity to move of the pick list people will bid!
They are also including the BH monday into the mix - complete waste of time. |

does that mean wen we arrive on sat and a lorry is parked over 6 picks with no driver in sight to move it we can ave money back and as for friday if epsom pay me £100 to attend i mite just turn up theres enough work for 2 books at best

Wasnot,There was a shed under the number board on the Hill where a man had a bookmakers list and you bought the betting badge.The customs man was in there as well and stamped your Tax sheet for betting duty.

There was another hut in Shysters alley what you now call the Walton.The senior ring official,Wally Bridges,who lived in Lambourn used to sit in there.The other areas I cant speak for because I dont know.One Derby day Sam Clay -Dells brother who had one arm was late and the BPA men met and decided with the bookmakers,rightly so, to keep the pitch open for him.Sam Clay-Dell was president of the BPA at the time.The brother was an amazing man he only had one arm but bet holding the tickets in his arm pit.A list of bookmakers must of existed because of the badge and the tax form that you put your field money on.

So in order to bet in previous years do I take it that some form of accreditation was sent inc. Cert. of discharge plus the required fee and Epsom returned some form of receipt to the bookmaker ? In the case when the 'Batten Affair' occurred the miscreant not only left unpaid bets but must have bet without providing the aforesaid documentation. Will the new system be robust enough to make a repeat occurrence highly unlikely ? Sorry if this is getting off the point.

i just gone through last years business total take 2378 slips equal 662 with normal costs leaves u with very little actual profit and they want u to bid 250 give us a break

Last year £60 Oaks, £150 Derby, £40 august bank holiday, if they try it on at £250 they will meet the point of deminishing returns.

You might have something there whisky - the tender form should offer three options for any or all of those days.

don't worry there will be a full complement there regardless of the price quoted, for everyone who refuses to pay there will be another who will pay whatever price is named by Epsom, with so many people missing £250 will look like a bargain when that bloke is the only person there with so many on here saying they will not go

the oaks day had 1 good year on the hill about 5 years ago ever since then the only people there r bookmakers hunting around for a pitch with 10 punters near them not worth a carrot shud b free

£250 in advance would be taking a bit of a punt on the weather, I will probably go to Beverley and send the sweetheart to Cartmel.
As for august bank holiday monday Epsom or Cartmel no contest. |
