Known steve for 30 years was betting with him for 3/4 years he lives down the road! The early 80s onwards was just cannon fodder for anyone putting the hours in more recordings and coverage of racing books were clueless and on track so they just cleaned up on everything.I was a teenager when I first used to go to steves office as was best mates with his younger brother, when I was in my late 20s I was putting on for him with his brothers I would pick up the paper for him in the morning and be in the office by 7am.If I hadn't met him would probably not have done this for a living and been stuck in the daily rut.In the early days of photo betting steve would have an elastic band running down the screenShockedand rarely got them wrongShockedhe also did all the entries for sea deer when it won all those races over a 16 month period and wardara and a few others that ran up sequences over a few seasons.

I remember going into hills having 1100 bets to tuppence in hills shop all they would take for one of steves perms.i went to an independent they took it to 5ps but was a place 6.The placepot paid half the place 6 and the independent had to pay out over 5k just for this £50 bet, they also did tissue prices on all races I remember doing some acca for steve 12 horses mostly very short but they were pricing up 1/2 when these things should've been 1/10.We closed the shop in 3 months! Most of the time we had to travel out,as soon as you're trying to get Canadians on to any sort of stake the alarm bells start ringing and you could never get a bet on.They even had our profiles yet we were only putting on and very rarely visted the same shops.
It took e 2 years after I stopped putting on to persuade them the bets I was putting on were my own but that was inevitable I think they let me bet with hills for about 12 months winning consistently on placepots for 2 years.I remember I won 10k and 5k in two weeks back to back the third week I walked in they upped the stakes so you could only do them to 10p so big perms became harder to speculate on and they obviously wouldn't want to take the bets.

dont know if this qualifys as best gambler i know but in the early 70s  fat kevin (he was a big lad ) came into the boozer where i was drinking one night and was borrowing money from anyone who would entertain him ,£1 £5 £10 anything he could get his hands on hit the pub land lord for a score and when he had asked everyone finished his drink and fooked off ,next day i was in a meccas shop and kevin walks in on the borrow again ,so i says to him whats going on ,he says i have had a word for one next week good price and i am getting as much dough as i can to lump on it, or words to that effect.
are you having a bet now i says ,no fook it not having a bet ,iam saving it and going to the track and its shyte or bust  i am of to the pawn shop and he pulls from out of his sky rocket a bag full of his wifes tom ,rings belcher chains earings the lot ,i am putting the lot in and having it on ,over the next 4 or 5 days kevin is till doing the rounds borrowing from any one he can and raising money he was a van driver and on the friday he gets his wages (cash in those days ) and gives his missus a tenner and keeps the rest for the bet ,sells his car it was only an old runaround and he wouldnt have got a lot for it but tbh i think he would have sold his ar$hole if he could to raise money ,
anyway day of race midweek  and he is off to one of the gaffs  it was plumpton or fontwell iirc ,a few off us are in the know about the name of the horse but i was a young buck in those days with only a passing interest in betting and i think i had a £5 or something on it , dont know ecxactly how much kev had raised over the 4 or 5 days but it must have been a fair whack  my wages were about £20 a week back then and you could get a good bet on in those days t the tracks and shops   fat kevin had put his fookin life on the line his marriage etc and he had all those people to pay back  some would have been faces who you had to pay back or a spell in hospital would have followed ,anyway i am back in the meccas shop with a few mates waiting for the race ! long story short kevs horse gets backed from 8s to 9/2 takes it up at the 2nd last wins by about 8l  happy days ........fook knows how much he won but it must have been  life changer for him . he had some **** did  kev !

Never exactly knew him but I chatted to Barry Hills a few times and he clearly made money from betting. I remember a day at Bath standing next to him on the stand. Guy Harwood had an odds on fav so I had backed a Hills horse without the fav. It was second a neck ahead of the third with 100 yards to go so I started shouting for it and Barry asked me what my bet was. I told him 7/2 without the fav and he put his head on one side and said "that was a very good bet" He always nodded and said hello after that. You always had to avoid the ones ridden by R Street though. Out the back or round the outside.
