Get better returns backing their picks to place as singles imo. You can go thru the card with 1 line only to find you just get back what you paid out.

With pool bets you only have to be smarter than the rest of the people in the pool imho

yeah, Like Angus haddock and that bloke wot picked that Hodge girly rider wot had never ridden a winner when she won him the million pound pool !

When betting opportunities exist with a large portion of recreational money to be won from long term losing punters then the more shrewd gambler is always interested , offset though by the 27% deduction which a shrewdie would be loathe to get involved in.
Yes would be the answer but very selective and probably confine interest to the meetings with a severe draw bias or lots of bad weather around resulting in a considerable amount of non-runners. Good luck today all ![]() |

I don't know any pro's who don't do ppots
!!The easiest way for punters to win is if they study aw meetings as you can put a line through 60% of the runners most meetings, fortunately most punters don't seem to realize this.![]() |

no. of course not . ludicrous . It would mean a professional playing in races he has no professional interest in . It would be very rare indeed if a professional was in any way interested in all 6 races on any card. Wouldnt be the slightest bit interested in a roll over either . why ? for the same reason he wouldnt be interested in the national lottery constantly rolling over . Placepots have by their very nature , too many variables in for any pro . They are pros for many reasons ...extreme discipline , thorough research , careful selection of individual events and a proper staking policy . As well as other factors of course . A question for all who doubt what i have said .......how in Gods name can you research all the races on a card for placepots ?

Here's one ^^^^i am a pro punter and you're second to last sentence answers your last, most pros will have studied every runner in every race and have a shortlist in every race. The bet is a massive advantage over your daily punter,in every way!!

ok you are a pro punter . I was a bookmaker with 4 shops in the north west and knew many pros. I never knew one who wished to do the placepot buut clearly there is at least one . By definition , the more events you play in , the more variables there are and the less chance you have of controlling those variables. That , gigilo , is basic mathematics. of course as a pro you will know that accountancy and mathematics , and the maths of probability [ if you did A level maths you will know all about that ] are essential weapons in a pro's armoury .

I couldn't even get the bets on when they weren't going in the pool because of constantly winning on them, banned for 50 mile radius. All hills shops banned in midlands and shown my profile, the only slight negative about the bet is the take out if your forms 10x better than an average punter everythings in your favour. There's nothing complicated about it,your form against an average punter over six races they can't possibly win,for the average punter it's a waste of time with such little studying.

I know one who does....has done for over a decade...he only does jumps Sept to April.

Duncan when they weren't going into the pool, you could drive to surrounding hills shops within a certain area and all of them wouldv'e been phoned through by the time you reached the next shop.Thats how great the bet was, they just wouldn't take them, now they go in the pool i don't get so involved but anyone doing a full card and knowing horses on that card that are going to be overbet ,should be doing the bet.

Pros would be very interested BUT 27% takeout and virtually all bets go in pool is off putting.

I am not a pro but I am a modest winner and placepots can, relatively often, offer very good value. I do win on them.
pablo I think one of the misconceptions in punting is that increasing the variables decreases the angle a professional can take on a given bet/race. I totally agree that what is effectively a 6-race accumulator introduces variables that make it hard to be sure of yourself, but as you said, basic mathematics skills are required to assess value and many punters that play the placepot do not take these into account. As one loose example of what I am trying to say, I placed a 16 line perm at a summer jumps meeting two years back (including all 4 that ran in the 4-runner novice chase). The outsider (16-1) won that race and that knocked virtually all of the (presumably) recreational money out. I won the bet to a 2 pound stake and the dividend was nearly 700 pounds. All because of one surprising result, where it really didn't cost me much as a player to perm all four horses. There are loads of other examples that illustrate the point but I'll not bore everyone by elaborating. Suffice to say that a mathematical approach to placepot betting can, in the right circumstances, make it a very good value bet. |
|
By:
Thats a poor example as you couldv'e done hundreds of small perms alike and you said that was the only result pure chance, you may as well do straight line of favs as doing a bet like that especially on aw meetings.
To win on the bet is all form related, turf meetings are more complex as you're factoring in everything so usually ending up with larger perms. If you're doing the aw its all time based if doing it as it should be done, very few punters will be doing this for one race never mind six. It's easier to cut perms down on a high % of aw meetings, but on the flip side punters won't invest heavily when crds are impossible. There are huge edges to all meetings and surfaces, that very few take advantage of thus the bet banned from shops and having to go in the pool.I could go on but would take another thousand words. ![]() |

Before To*e Direct in the offices, freak Placepot dividends would now & again occur.(12 years ago or more?), but hardly ever now.
It was good fun in the 80s & early 90s to have big perms in the shops knowing they were not in the tote pool. |
|
By:
My perms were refused before the toat was even introduced, after having several big wins over a months period the hills shops around my area put the stakes up to 10pences when no other shops anywhere were doing so.You mention 12 years ago which is about right, hills did exactly the same with handicap chases on 6 horse tricast races at around the exact same time another bet that was knocked back and probably the best value bet around apart from the ppots.

i knew a lad who 15-20 yr ago made his fortune from placepots in the shops not in the pool,he targeted small field meetings, jumps on bad ground, and he would have a 5k placepot single line(1 line to 5k,).i know he won 350k and 287k just from a big stake single line ,where the number of runners never got above 8 per race,
|
|
By:
If that were true he was either very lucky, stupid or both.
|
|
By:
Really, comingupthehill !
£5,000 single line stake on a placepot, or have I misunderstood? Could you name the obliging (skint) layer please? |
|
By:
he was a semi pro footballer, and he moved from a terraced house to a detched mansion in alderlay edge within 3 months,we are talking in the silver bucks wayward lad days, where you would have 3 races with bankers in for placepots and only 3 to find.so a 5k ,10k line if not affecting the pool is a good bet.
|
|
By:
It would be impossible to get that bet on as it wouldv'e been phoned through just on a £50 straight, thats a lot of petrol.
![]() |
|
By:
laddies at first, then they stopped him - he was the reason they went into the pools,he struggled in the end to get any sort of bet on,he went to the track ,stephen little would lay him, once they went into the pool then the bet becomes pointless.
|
|
By:
Well as being as he was a football player ''at the end of the day''it was a mugs bet and he got lucky IF he got that amount on.
