Phar Lap - Winner 1930
The name Phar Lap is derived from a Thai phrase meaning 'lightning' and, true to his name, he was one of the fastest horses in Australia’s racing history. Phar Lap was foaled in Timaru in New Zealand in 1926 and came to Australia where he raced from the ages of two to five years. He stood a mighty 17.1 hands tall (approximately 1.75 metres high to the highest point on his back where his neck and back join) and was able to gallop at speeds of over 60 km per hour. But more importantly than this, at a time when Australia was suffering the disastrous financial and social crisis known as the Great Depression, Phar Lap became the hero of the nation. Like other battlers, Phar Lap was slow to show his real ability but with persistence, he became one of the most successful racehorses. From 51 starts, Phar Lap secured 37 wins, three second place runs and two third place runs, with 14 in succession in the 1930–31 racing season. Phar Lap was proving to be the major contender in the lead-up to the Racing Carnival of 1930. Affectionately known as the ‘Red Terror’, he was favoured to win the 1930 Melbourne Cup. However, some people stood to lose a lot of money if Phar Lap won the race. During his preparation and track work for the Cup, he was attacked. As his strapper Tommy Woodcock, was leading Phar Lap back to his stables with another pony, Tommy sensed something was wrong and led them down a side street, pushing Phar Lap against a fence. Moments later a car came around the corner and gunshots were fired. Luckily neither Tommy nor the horses were hit. After that, Phar Lap’s trainer Harry Telford was not prepared to take any chances and kept him in secret stables; he even dressed another horse in his rug to trick would-be attackers. The drama continued as the truck transporting Phar Lap to the Melbourne Cup had engine troubles and had difficulty getting started. However, Phar Lap finally arrived at Flemington with a police motorcycle escort and entered the race as favourite. The crowd of over 72,000 cheered to a deafening roar as the horses began to race. Despite Phar Lap carrying a weight of 9 st 12 lb (62.5 kg) – a very heavy weight for a four-year-old horse – he managed to win the race by three lengths. The next year he ran again but had to carry nearly a stone more and this time the weight was too much. Following his Australian career, Phar Lap was taken to Mexico to run the richest race in the world, the Agua Caliente Handicap in Tijuana. Phar Lap’s fame rose to international status as he beat a field of the world’s best racehorses by two lengths in record time. Sadly, however, just weeks later, Tommy found Phar Lap in a distressed state and the horse soon died from what was initially thought to be a case of severe colic. People were shocked and dismayed as the news of the ‘Red Terror’s’ death spread to Australia, and soon rumours of poisoning were circulated. Experts still argue over the cause. Recent research indicates that Phar Lap died from an accidental overdose of arsenic, possibly contained in a tonic. |

EIGHT CARAT – the grand dam of Theme Song ranks as the only mare ever to produce five individual Group One winners. Such is her influence that this success is breeding on through both her sons and her daughters. She is now the first, second or third dam of thirteen Group One winners. Two of her sons have sired Group One winners; and three of her daughters & three of her grand daughters have already left Group One winners. This is Australasia’s most popular & commercial family, regularly producing the top price yearling of the year. In fact the top price yearling ever at NZ$3.6million is her grand son Don Eduardo, who is a Group One winner.
Eight Carat was unplaced herself as a racehorse but is a half sister to the champion Habibti, one of the greatest female sprinters of all time. Eight Carat is also a half sister to Kreisler, a very successful sire in NZ. Her sire Pieces of Eight was a stakes winner of the Eclipse S-G1 & the Champion S-G1, and was by Relic from a mare by the influential Dante. Eight Carat’s dam line traces directly to Lady Josephine and is one of the most influential stallion-producing female lines in history. Her third dam is a half sister to Royal Charger, and her fourth dam is a half sister to Nasrullah. This is also the direct female line of the great sires Fair Trial, Mahmoud, Prince Taj, Abernant, Kalamoun, & Tudor Minstrel |

Quite interesting that regarding Phar Lap's form as the horse seemed to improve with age, yet when Deacon Blues was pointed out as a possible rival to Black Caviar, we have the Aussies saying how he only won his maiden group races this season.
It seems only Aussie horses are allowed to improve with age. ![]() |

Still waiting for Antipodean participation and an explanation why they think they have the best printers in the world? firstly we dont breed printers. 2ndly moron, i replied name the last 5 world champion sprinters and their breading....simple....says no more. |

What's a "het" moron megsy? Did you perhaps mean "the" moron?
If you are going to pull people on their typos then you had better make sure your don't have any yourself mate.......I'm sure even you though could work out that printers was meant to be sprinters.......and then you add breading instead of breeding just for good measure. Oops. ![]() And yes I knew what the specific question was but my response was you seem to desperately cling on to sprinters as if they are the only kind of races out there. Oh and by the way, these best horse in the world claims are a bit pointless really until each significant country puts up their best to race against each other and that's not really ever likely to happen. |

2003,2004,2005 world ratings champion sprinter silent witness (AUS)
2007, 2008,2009 world rating champion sprinter Sacred kingdon (AUS) 20010, 2011 world rating champion sprinter Black Caviar (AUS) poor take over target had 8 starts in england and was aged 8yrs, 9yrs and 10 years of age in his 3 ventures to england, he was either beaten by another australian horse or a american sprinter. what dont you understand?? your own racing peers were part of the judging?? same who have Frankel at the top end of ratings, you want to dispute that too??...of cause not !!! |
|
By:
read it and weep
|
|
By:
Proves my point then if it's all about ratings and not what the horses do against others from other countries, considering it's supposed to be a "world" thing and horses like Silent Witness (AUS) not only didn't race outside of another country for its first 18 races but didn't even do so on any other track but Sha tin for them. Then first time away from there it got beaten into 3rd. It then also failed to win any of its final 9 races despite 8 of them being at Sha tin. If you can't see the the flaws in naming any horse that does that as a world champion then there really is no hope for you.
Sacred Kingdom, would that be the one that finished 4½L behind in 5th here in the Golden Jubilee Stakes behind 3 of ours and one from South Africa and ended its career just about winning half of its races? The winner that day was Art Connoisseur and that one only ever ran 4 more times after that, finishing 12th of 13 (beaten 20L), 15th of 16 (beaten 17½L), 12th of 14 (beaten 18L) and 11th of 14 (beaten 9L) and had a winning career record of 4 wins from 11 starts......top class form eh? ![]() As I've said elsewhere I've never said anything negative about Black Caviar and what she has done but it's only fair to point out she's doing it in one country only and would have to do it elsewhere or other countries send their top horses over and she beats them for it to have a bit more credibility to label her a world champion. By the way, if she had only won half of her races would she still be a "world champion" too? I've also previously said that I personally think the ratings are largely pointless and so the same applies to Frankel (I'm not really that keen of cherries) although it is worth pointing out that he has beaten horses from Ireland, France and Japan and that other horses he has beaten have gone to other countries and like Ireland, France and Germany and won Gr1s to frank the form. As for takeover Target's career here, after it won it was beaten by Miss Andretti and also: Les Arc x 2 - UK trained, USA prefix Soldier's Tale - UK trained, USA prefix Equiano - Spain trained, FR prefix Kingsgate Native - UK trained, IRE prefix Fleeting Spirit - UK trained, IRE prefix So let me see, either you are wrong here about the only being beaten by other Aussie or American sprinters or you are trying to suggest its the letters that come with the horse's name that count. If that's what you mean, surely then So You Think is a NZ horse and with its sire being High Chaparral (IRE) and dam Triassic (NZ) what claims exactly did Australia have on him then?......Unless of course you are being hypocritical once more and want the best of both worlds when it suits. ![]() |

lol A lot of Antipodean seething.Btw Megsy PRINTERS was intended to wind you up as we are well aware you think you have the best sprinters and probably think you have top printers as well.
Printers and sprinters probably have something in common in Aus,all your sires and dams originated from UK bloodlines. So you see,you have nothing that is actually Australian by origin. ![]() ![]() |

There hasn't been a great Austrailian racehorse, sire or dam but i have to say that there has been some truly great Australian Jockeys.
Scobie Breasley and Ganet Bougoure had no peers imo. Granted it stared to go downhill from Brent Thomson onwards but nether the less i can't think of two many countries that have produced as many top class Jockeys. |
|
By:
Most of us aussie's are irish or scottish if you go back far enough (just 2-3 generations and most people will have countless ties).
So i'm not sure how far you want to keep going back with racing tbh. Once the horse is bred in the country (regardless of what it was out of) then it is that country imo. And for all intents and purposes good kiwi's are aussie's. It's like this with the kiwi's. Australian actor russel crowe once won an oscar and New Zealand actor russel crowe was arrested at his hotel in New York. |

I agree tommyjane but according to megsy when Takeover Target came here he was either beaten by another australian horse or a(sic) american sprinter. because all the UK trained horses that beat him had (USA) after their name......although he is obviously ignoring the ones that had (IRE) plus the ones that although might not have won the races still finished ahead of TT anyway, horses like Iffraaj, Amadeus Wolf and Main Aim. African Rose finished ahead of him too but I would consider that to be a French horse seeing as it was trained by Mme C Head-Maarek.
I suppose if I really wanted to split hairs I could also point out that TT came over here 4 times and not 3 as he claimed and was aged 7 when he first came over. |
