Walsh whip ban fuels riders' anger at Aintree
By Lewis Porteous 5:31PM 22 OCT 2011 THERE was a delay to the penultimate race at Aintree on Saturday and the immediate speculation was that jockeys had refused to leave the weighing room in protest at a five-day whip ban Ruby Walsh incurred in the previous handicap chase for novices. Walsh, riding Edgardo Sol, was involved with a head-to-head battle with the Sam Twiston-Davies partnered TheCockney Mackem from the last fence, with Edgardo Sol prevailing by a nose. However, Walsh was adjudged to have struck the winner nine times through the course of the race, one more than the permitted eight strikes that the new whip rules allowed and as a result was handed a mandatory five-day ban. Reacting to the ban, an angry Walsh said: "If that deserves a five-day ban, this game is f****ed." It is understood that that Walsh, along with his weighing room colleagues, refused to leave the weighing room for the following race after the stewards handed out the ban and it was not until the trainers with runners in the 2m4f handicap chase were called to the weighing room that the ten jockeys agreed to participate in the race. The contest went to the Jamie Moore-ridden Hector's Choice, with Walsh finishing third aboard the Sue Smith-trained Gansey |

if everyone kept within the rules there would be no problem..
or is ruby walsh above the rules...... this exactly what happened with the old rules...... so seems to me there are some jockeys will not obey any rules...past or present. |

Cornelius Lysaght #Aintree: Ruby Walsh has threatened not to ride at some fixtures in UK in protest at new whip rules; deemed to have used it x9 in 4-40 race Does he really think that cutting his nose of to spite his face is the way forward, can just see the attendance figures at Exeter etc plummeting because he`s not in attendance,in danger of disappearing up his own arse, bet it`s on the days with the dodgy novice chasers are debuting. |

Don't you people want to see jockeys get the most out of their horses.
This is not a petti competition , this is supposed to be sport of the highest order and winning is the game. ![]() ![]() You ...ts wanna go play fookin netball or sumthing......................Jeez ![]() ![]() |

holmes, i dont suppose you owned, trained or rode the horse who lost because someone else broke the rules?

No i dont. However if i backed the 2nd i would have no complaint about ruby's ride as that is why i watch/go racing. I don't want fookin jockey's not riding whole heartedly. I would not go racing to watch hands and heels races and would certainly not bet on it,
![]() I want 100% commitment from jock and horse, at least while i'm alive anyway. ![]() ![]() |

rev,if u watch the race again, its clear that ruby's mount is responding to his urging's where as twiston davies' isnt and he too was using his whip almost just as much,The cockney mackem is clearly a bridle ponce and didnt deserve to win

by the way,
how do you get a picture in the avatar box please. ta ![]() |

There might be an argument holmes that the horses who require more stokes with the whip are not giving 100% in the first place.
|
|
By:
Well done Mr Holmes. Actually you are not speaking to punters. Those above who criticised you have no interest in the best horse winning and are not gamblers, they are serial losers. I certainly wouldn't swap my Bf account with any of them.
If they were gamblers they would be horrified at this happening to our sport. But they aren't so they don't give a sh@t. |

By:
ots, i dont like the cockney mackem either, fookin hound. fact is if ruby stayed within the rules, the cockney mackem woulda won. holmes, i cant remember really, you have to upload pictures to you gallery thing first. i only did 2 and wouldnt bother doing any more. awful hardship

There seems to be misunderstandings whether taps on the shoulder whilst holding the reins count according to Ruby.
It wouldnt be the 1st time that Racing has the messages mixed up ![]() |

if he took his hands of the rein then it counts

no one can deny it was an over vigorous rides no matter how many strikes, and no ones telling me after watching the head on that the horse didnt feel that

Spot on ranader.
The BHA will not back down any further on this issue. They are too arrogant. The current situation is only going to worsen.Without corrective steps racing is heading for very serious trouble. The only solution that I can see is for all factions in racing; trainers,jockeys,race-courses,bookies,punters etc. to band together and demand the resignations of those responsible for this fiasco and to appoint people from their ranks to run the sport. Failing that the interested parties should form their own Authority run by racing for racing and operate under it's code, relegating the BHA to oblivion. |
|
By:
Ireland and elsewhere should refuse to recognise the bans.
|
|
By:
Interesting thought, salmon. Wonder what the BHA would make of that. Probably say that it proves Britain is the leader in the sport and all those bloody colonials should know their place!

Ive just watched the Walsh ride and its in no way bad and agree with him.
In the words of Keegan, i would LOOOVVVE it if other countries didnt recognise the bans |
|
By:
and if anyone believes a word these jocks say, ryan moore said jocks would hit them 2 or 3 times less to avoid the bans so on that basis walsh hit it and he did lay into it 3 times to many, thought the argument earlier in the week was horses were getting beat because jocks wernt riding them out not hitting them to many times
|

The problem I have is I want the best horse to win. I don't want horses abused but I want them to produce their best. Some do so without recourse to the whip but some don't. The ride Ruby gave that horse was strong but the horse kept finding for him. It obviously was not running to its best. Had he not been finding the 2nd horse who was going much better until the run in would have won.
The lad who hit his horse several times when not likely to be in contention deserves a ban. That is unnecessary abuse. Any rule that permits or restricts jockeys from winning races is a charter for cheats. That is not good for our sport. The BHA should drop the number of hits and as they are watching every jockey anyway they should have enough experience to judge whether a horse has been abused or encouraged. And punish accordingly. If the stewards cannot differentiate between a good ride and a bad one how on earth can the general public? How can anyone possibly judge whether 8 hits from Paddy Brennan is equivalent to 8 hits from Amy Ryan. By reducing the number of hits the hardest hitting jockeys will begin to get the majority of the rides because owners and trainers need winners. |

1st time poster - 'no ones telling me after watching the head on that the horse didnt feel that '.
Well I am telling you that of course he felt it but it didn't HURT him. - have you ever seen a whip ? Obviously not as they DO NOT hurt the horses. I don't know how many times people have to keep repeating this. |
