Second was struck about 11 times inside the final furlong, including twice when clearly held and clear of the 3rd. Is that acceptable?

Don't you mean only in the rest of the racing world?

Nothing more than love taps - and nothing compared to Spencer on Cape Blanco.

This is where the discretion of the stewards should come in - most of us agree some whippings deserve a ban - like the one Spencer handed out to Cape Blanco.

For the Cape Blanco ride I would have banned Spencer for 7 consecutive grade / group 1 race days. For that ride in Ireland, a 1 day ban with a warning of a heavier ban the next time.

That is where they have got it wrong with bans for offences in big races, imo - the jockey should then be banned for future big race days, not days when there is only bread + butter stuff on.

George, I agree about the penalties. It's also pointless banning someone for 15 days if they only have 1 mount a month. There will be a lot of opportunities coming up for such jockeys on gambled horses if the BHA don't act. I also think they should consider amending the result wrt prize money (i.e. not the betting result) where they think extra hits have affected the result.

Bans for Group races is an interesting idea .
