I presume none of you approve of jump racing. Yes?

What is more 'cruel' - asking a horse to risk its life jumping an obstacle at speed / slogging around 3 miles in the mud / jumping round the Grand National course - or persuading a horse with a whip at the end of a Flat race?

If we are going to question the whip, then surely we should be questioning other aspects of the sport - particularly jump racing. As far as I'm aware no horse ever died from being hit with a whip, or the 'persuader' as I prefer to call it. However, how many have died jumping a fence?

So please, none of you who disprove of the whip, tell me you follow jump racing. If you do, then you are an hypocrite, imo. And that includes McCririck.

Imo, the whip issue is the thin end of the wedge. Jump racing and racing 2YOs, for example, could be argued are more 'cruel'.

Fwiw, I follow both codes and don't have a problem with any of it. All I'm saying is if you think using the
'persuader' is wrong then surely you should questioning other aspects of the sport as well.

*an "air-cushioned" whip, not forgetting.

So is that settled - none of you anti-whip boys approve of jump racing and horses risking their lives jumping obstacles at speed?

I thought as much.

After all, not many horses have died after being persuaded with an air-cushioned whip to try and go faster towards the end of a Flat race.

Feck, anything you want to add?

Well said George in fact the whole industry can be seen as cruel as we breed these horses for racing it is not natural. What happens to all the horses who dissappear after 1 season. Then while we are at it Fishing, Greyhounds, Crufts, eating any animal all cruel. Nothing however is worse than hitting a horse 1 more time than you should.Anti whip brigade should get life.

Actually I think the worst cruelty happens to the horses at the end of their careers. People are happy enough paying money to stable & feed their horses while they are in training, but too many don't think about supporting the horse after its racing days are over. Not just the ones slaughtered for dogfood/glue/whatever, there are too many abandoned, neglected or maltreated.
