He knew the rules, we know the rules, why did he hit it too many times in the last furlong?

Exactly! Is he not able to control his arms? If he breaks the rules, he pays the price. Why is he now surprised that he has been banned?

I find it staggering that he's complaining, no horses about him, not a driving finishing involving loads of horses, hit it six times inside the final furlong, that's against the rules !

If the police say we can have 2 pints before we are not allowed to drive, we don't drink three and then say boo hoo if we get nicked !

As he said it is likely telling Messi not to kick with his left foot.
Don't be surprised when Messi kicks the ball with his left foot because he does not play football so well unless he does.

The banned is not based on cruelty to horses.
It is nothing to do with racing.
It is pandering to a few people who most probably know next to nothing about racing. It is pandering to a few Fleet Street journalist and this is a certain route to ruin.

You two, Celtic Son and Magoo, have proved you know absolutely nothing about this game. He is one of the greatest jockeys of his generation with the softest hands in the business. He wants to win and these new rules prevent him and others from doing so. Your ignorance precedes you.
By:

What do you mean it's easy to ride a race from an armchair, ffs he only needed to count to five with nothing happening anywhere near him.

Jockeys are trying to hold racing to ransom now.

bilbobaggins, are you saying that in order to win, Hughes has to hit a horse more times than other jockeys? The rules are the same for all jockeys. If he can't win abiding by the rules, perhaps he is right in giving up now.

This is staggering, basically you are supporting the fact that you should have an extra pint over your allowance before driving by spouting garbage about trying to win. They are the rules, you stick to the rules, whether they are right or wrong.

Hughes' problem is that he cannot continue riding under the current rules. He has stated on RUK that it is impossible to do his owners trainers and himself justice under the new rules. Perhaps you should pay a bit more attention to what he and other experts are telling us.

he only missed the whip allocation by 1.
Give him a bit more practice and he'll be able to make that massive adjustment

You cant tell the people who dont understand race riding.

According to some on here you just sit on a horse and count how many times you have hit it. Cry

Nonsense, what part of this is difficult to understand, there are rules, he's broke them twice in less than a week ! There has been about 70 plus races this week and apart from Buick, only two small time apprentices have been banned on the Flat haven't they? Hughes has done it twice !

No wonder jesus wept. Some horses need to be encouraged more than others. If the horse is going forward let him be encouraged more by use of the whip. Most proffesionals will know when a horse has no more to give and will not continue to whip him. 5, 10 15 who fookin cares as long as no coont is dying. CryCryCry

You obviously don't understand the statement about the beer. It is against the rules/law to drink a third pint, so you don't drink a third pint because you are told not to. It is against the rules to hit the horse more than 5 times in the final furlong, so you don't do it !

Why are so many other jockeys not having this problem?

Celtic Son. Tell me something. How long does it take to drink three pints while sitting in a chair ? How long does it take to hit a horse 6 times, while travelling at 35 m.p.h. while doing everything possible to avoid getting killed? Your statements show a complete ignorance of horses ,horse racing, and the competitive nature of those jockeys who put their lives on the line and provide us with a spectacle and a game unequalled in any other sport.

The experts say the whip is not cruel and Animal Rights have not said it is not cruel.
The ban is not there to save the horse from harm.
Just because a rule is brought in does not make it right.
If it is wrong people must fight it. They must stand up against it.

It seems some people are robots and if they are told something it must be right. The Church said the world was flat, but a few people show it was not.
Rules which are nonsense should be got rid of.

One logical reason for the ban?
The only thing people can bring up is the public don't like it. Well when was there a survey, a referendum?
There hasn't been one to my knowledge so it is a few people driven by emotions and not logic.

I find it staggering that some people on this forum don't understand what the word rules mean.

Would you prefer it if jockeys accrued extra smacks per furlong the longer they ride as a prize? I am not even saying the 5 smacks of the whip inside the final furlong is correct, what I am trying to put across is that the rules say only 5 are allowed inside the final furlong and I could see no reason for that extra one close to the line tonight when it was clear he wasn't going to catch the winner.

Hughes would be the last jockey you would expect to struggle with it too. He has often been accused about not using the whip enough in the past! Stange situation but a good horseman for sure and one of the best horsemen around. Agree with Celtic though in that it is strange how they seem to lose count- also strange how some jocks seem to think the limit is 3 smacks. They all need to give it time as I cant see it being changed by that stubborn bunch

Ok, for those who seem to think it was fine, watch the race and tell me that last smack was required.

I have seen many horses take off because of the whip. When you are jockey with the will to win then i can imagine it would be very hard to change your instincts instantly.

I can definitely agree with that Ibrahima but those who just come on here and say 'it's a joke, the rules are terrible' are just missing the point.

It must be incredibly difficult to change habits, but other jockeys haven't had the same problems this week and I defy anyone to suggest that horse benefited from that last smack tonight as she was running on strongly. If he was in any doubt, knowing the rules as a person who was already banned, you err on the side of caution as no punter can have a problem with a jockey riding inside the rules.

i dont have much time for Hughes, but fair play to him for making a stand.if the rules aren,t changed then there has to be a strike.brought in to pander to fookin do gooders who know fook all.at the end of the day if you own a lazy horse it will never win another race.

Up the limit to six in the final furlong. He won't break the rules at all then.
By:
TRD.Racing

i think if they made it 9 smacks allowed,7 inside the last most flat jockeys would be happy with that

"I find it staggering that some people on this forum don't understand what the word rules mean"

Have you actually got any argument that doesn't consist of simply misrepresenting the position of others?
