My final point on this is that Richard Hughes, in my opinion, is the best jockey riding at the moment and should easily be champion jockey, no doubt about that. If I owned a racehorse, I'd love to have him riding the horse for his skills and ability to have the horse in the right position.

However, whether the rules are right or wrong, he's broken them twice in a week now and that's his fault not the rules.

Why TRD - the dull feckers claim it's impossible to count to 5 in the heat of battle.

The mythical 'lazy horse' so what if it never wins another race - why do want to see races won by horses who don't want to win?

Six Gun. There was a survey carried on as part of the BHA review, run by a  company which contacted people that are on it's books as regular answerers of polls. They asked if use of the whip was cruel. The majority said yes. They the went on to explain why whips were required and that according to the experts in the sport the whip did not hurt or harm the horse if used correctly. They were then asked the same question. Half changed their minds. Which shows that at least half of those polled hadn't a clue about racing. So,in part, the BHA has been swayed by a group of people who no nothing about racing and are such sad pathetic lonely souls that they've got nothing better to do than answer polls.

I am not sure of your point Gonzo. Celtic son has made his position very clear- he can't understand why the jockeys can't adhere to the new whip rules and exceed the number of smacks permitted. He has made that clear and it is you who is just mindlessly criticising him. You are contradicting yourself without giving any form of counter argument.

Sorry one final point, yes the 7 and 9 idea sounds sensible to give jockeys some help but it's absolutely 100% certain someone while break that rule and say they want 8 and 10, so where does it stop?

their was me thinking this survey must been conducted at a racecourse, a high street or around a sporting arena.

Please do not tell me it was conducted via the internet using poll addicts ?

CelticS you are starting to come accross ok, the rule in my opinion should not be a number. it should be that is just over the top like in the national.

We have used Richard Hughes for the past 15 years and FULLY support him today. Lets hope the BHA do something about this rule immediately.

gradual implementation would have helped, bit whether the bha / pja messed up who knows; frankly the whole implementation and change management is shambolic on the bhas part

It would be nice to see jockeys justifying their riding fee by doing some serious pushing and shoving where necessary

"I am not sure of your point Gonzo. Celtic son has made his position very clear- he can't understand why the jockeys can't adhere to the new whip rules and exceed the number of smacks permitted"

No, he is coming up with straw men arguments like suggesting that we don't understand what 'rules' mean, and coming up with ridiculous analogies to do with drink driving.

It's nothing to do with not understanding the concept of rules; the entire argument surrounds whether the rules, and the reason for their implementation are correct.

Celtic Son's points are very valid and well made- I am not sure why people are so against him as everything he says is correct. Rules and laws are there for a reason-and whether these are right or wrong- they should be maintained. Hughes has failed to do this twice.

Defintlydum, why dont we shot all the LAZY horses, that should take about 80% of the race horse population out of the system, you really are one of the clueless, who think horses are dum like you.

in the analysis after the race RUK never talked about RH hitting the horse too many times, it just looks normal and natural.  of course he didnt obey the rules but he his just saying the rules stink and he cant do justice to the owners of horses as it stands now

TRD.Racing
I agree with you about  9 smacks allowed,7 inside the last. There are going to be a lot of unhappy punters out there when their horse cost them money  because the jockey could only hit the horse 5 times inside the final furlong. And as for jump racing horses like Deano's Beeno would never have won a race. In my opinion the rule is wrong and I for one agree with Richard Hughes' descision.  For what it is worth I will be monotoring which horses need stronger handling before having a bet.  I think it will cost the racing industry millions of pounds as a result of this stupid rule.  GOOD LUCK ALL.

TSD

But we're constantly told that horses won't do this or that if they don't want to. Surely in trying not to line up, Deanos was saying he didn't want to race. The answser - on one occasion it was for McCoy to hit the horse about 50 times before the feckin' race. That can't be right.

The rule is a complete Joke If it is to make racing look better to those outside how can a Jockey be banned for whipping a horse 6 times while in the same race a Jockey whips his 7 times and its OK

Big mac slaughtered Hughes his words suggest Hughes is retiring because he cant whip horses = a terrible epitaph. Mccririck is the voice of racing and is so respected.

If you agree that using a mobile while driving affects your ability to react, then how does that sit with race riding and counting strokes?

Stupid quote function.
There are companies who do surveys.
I did some of these once. You fill in 100's of questions.
There is no evidence given to base your decision on, its tick a box.

The scientific evidence is the whip is not cruel so the decision goes against this and has likely been based on a tick box survey.

Hughes problem is that the people who govern racing are living on a different planet from the real racing people who actually know what they are talking about.A major shake up within racing is needed but the problem is Turkeys dont vote for xmas do they?

Richard Hughes's problem would appear not too complex.  The BHA armchair jockeys are as good at making rules as barstool soldiers are at fighting wars.  They know everything because they have to put nothing into practice.
By:

When: 13 Oct 11 23:47
these new whip rules are totally insane, all the jockey's should come out on strike for a week and if they did strike this new whip rule would be binned quicker that a losing betting slip.
if things look bad now just wait till the jumps season takes off proper, there's going to be countless horses jumping the last and looking home and hosed and then getting beat because the jockey can't give it a couple more taps, tremendous fun i'm sure for in play traders but shocking bad p.r. for the sport as far as betting shop punters go, they'll be turning their backs on racing in their droves.

Nothing is wrong with Richard Hughes ; I just hope more jockeys get behind him. And even if they don't these new rules are a big own goal against racing, and need to fall
