I find it staggering that he's complaining, no horses about him, not a driving finishing involving loads of horses, hit it six times inside the final furlong, that's against the rules !

If the police say we can have 2 pints before we are not allowed to drive, we don't drink three and then say boo hoo if we get nicked !

As he said it is likely telling Messi not to kick with his left foot.
Don't be surprised when Messi kicks the ball with his left foot because he does not play football so well unless he does.

The banned is not based on cruelty to horses.
It is nothing to do with racing.
It is pandering to a few people who most probably know next to nothing about racing. It is pandering to a few Fleet Street journalist and this is a certain route to ruin.

Report Mr Magoo • October 13, 2011 8:51 PM BST

The experts say the whip is not cruel and Animal Rights have not said it is not cruel.
The ban is not there to save the horse from harm.
Just because a rule is brought in does not make it right.
If it is wrong people must fight it. They must stand up against it.

It seems some people are robots and if they are told something it must be right. The Church said the world was flat, but a few people show it was not.
Rules which are nonsense should be got rid of.

One logical reason for the ban?
The only thing people can bring up is the public don't like it. Well when was there a survey, a referendum?
There hasn't been one to my knowledge so it is a few people driven by emotions and not logic.

I find it staggering that some people on this forum don't understand what the word rules mean.

Would you prefer it if jockeys accrued extra smacks per furlong the longer they ride as a prize? I am not even saying the 5 smacks of the whip inside the final furlong is correct, what I am trying to put across is that the rules say only 5 are allowed inside the final furlong and I could see no reason for that extra one close to the line tonight when it was clear he wasn't going to catch the winner.

Hughes would be the last jockey you would expect to struggle with it too. He has often been accused about not using the whip enough in the past! Stange situation but a good horseman for sure and one of the best horsemen around. Agree with Celtic though in that it is strange how they seem to lose count- also strange how some jocks seem to think the limit is 3 smacks. They all need to give it time as I cant see it being changed by that stubborn bunch
Report Celtic Son • October 13, 2011 9:12 PM BST

I can definitely agree with that Ibrahima but those who just come on here and say 'it's a joke, the rules are terrible' are just missing the point.

It must be incredibly difficult to change habits, but other jockeys haven't had the same problems this week and I defy anyone to suggest that horse benefited from that last smack tonight as she was running on strongly. If he was in any doubt, knowing the rules as a person who was already banned, you err on the side of caution as no punter can have a problem with a jockey riding inside the rules.

Report Celtic Son • October 13, 2011 9:21 PM BST
My final point on this is that Richard Hughes, in my opinion, is the best jockey riding at the moment and should easily be champion jockey, no doubt about that. If I owned a racehorse, I'd love to have him riding the horse for his skills and ability to have the horse in the right position.

However, whether the rules are right or wrong, he's broken them twice in a week now and that's his fault not the rules.

Six Gun. There was a survey carried on as part of the BHA review, run by a  company which contacted people that are on it's books as regular answerers of polls. They asked if use of the whip was cruel. The majority said yes. They the went on to explain why whips were required and that according to the experts in the sport the whip did not hurt or harm the horse if used correctly. They were then asked the same question. Half changed their minds. Which shows that at least half of those polled hadn't a clue about racing. So,in part, the BHA has been swayed by a group of people who no nothing about racing and are such sad pathetic lonely souls that they've got nothing better to do than answer polls.

No, he is coming up with straw men arguments like suggesting that we don't understand what 'rules' mean, and coming up with ridiculous analogies to do with drink driving.

It's nothing to do with not understanding the concept of rules; the entire argument surrounds whether the rules, and the reason for their implementation are correct.

I agree with you about  9 smacks allowed,7 inside the last. There are going to be a lot of unhappy punters out there when their horse cost them money  because the jockey could only hit the horse 5 times inside the final furlong. And as for jump racing horses like Deano's Beeno would never have won a race. In my opinion the rule is wrong and I for one agree with Richard Hughes' descision.  For what it is worth I will be monotoring which horses need stronger handling before having a bet.  I think it will cost the racing industry millions of pounds as a result of this stupid rule.  GOOD LUCK ALL.

these new whip rules are totally insane, all the jockey's should come out on strike for a week and if they did strike this new whip rule would be binned quicker that a losing betting slip.
if things look bad now just wait till the jumps season takes off proper, there's going to be countless horses jumping the last and looking home and hosed and then getting beat because the jockey can't give it a couple more taps, tremendous fun i'm sure for in play traders but shocking bad p.r. for the sport as far as betting shop punters go, they'll be turning their backs on racing in their droves.
