BHA Richard Hughes FINED AND BANNED for whipping the horse 6 times inside the final furlong(5 is the maximum)

Has Betfair just pulled the other thread on this topic?
By:
Oi, where's me thread gone?
By:
Why pulled?
By:
hughes says it was for corrective matters....you are allowed to do that....obviously they didn't believe him
By:
Exactly!
There was nothing said that was wrong. I put a comment on the other thread and now the thread is gone. This is an important topic. There is an interview on RUK about why he used the whip and he says so he didn't bump into the next horse (and get a 2 day ban). This whip thing has only just started. The official said it was brought in because the public wanted it. 90% of the public don't know about it or care. We are talking about 1% of fanatics. |
By:
How exactly are they going to police it though, after every race watch all replays and have one person watch each jockey each time or the same person watch the race 16 times if there are 16 runners in it? Or are they going to ask jobsworth punters to phone in when they notice anything?
Maybe someone should go on Dragons' Den and pitch a whip invention with a LCD screen or voice software that counts the strokes for the jockeys! |
By:
These rules are going to prove to be unworkable.
Won't be enough jockeys available to ride ![]() |
By:
What happens if a jockey breaks the rules but the stewards don't pick it up? Does he get away with it like footballers do?
By:
This will just help the few extremists that want racing banned. Whip stories are going to be everywhere now when theres no abuse happening.
By:
their setting up a special punters hotline....so that we can shop them

^^ denathorn - we have this invention called television, you will probably be watching it now you dc!

KIEREN FOX and Richard Hughes became the first jockeys to be found in breach of the new whip guidelines when riding out the finish of the 1m2f handicap at Salisbury on Monday. Fox was found to have struck the winner Orthodox Lad 11 times in total, seven inside the final furlong, with the stewards handing him a 15-day ban. Fox also forfeited his percentage of the winning prize-money, as well as his riding fee. Hughes, who was third on Swift Blade, was found to have struck his mount six times in the final furlong, one above the allowed amount of five, and was given an automatic five-day ban. Flat jockeys can now strike their mounts only seven times during a race and five times inside the final furlong, roughly half the number of times they were able to use the whip under the previous guidelines. Prior to these offences, Flat jockeys appear to have adapted well to the rule changes, with no offences at the other meetings in Britain on Monday at Yarmouth and Windsor. Explaining the bans at Salisbury was stewards' secretary William Nunnerley, who said on Racing UK: "We have worked very hard to talk to educate the jockeys and it is disappointing that there were breaches, especially Kieren Fox as he was well over the top." Reacting to the ban, Richard Hughes said on Racing UK: "I only used the whip as a corrective measure, the horse had his head up beside me and I kept pulling on the left rein. "I pushed and pushed and gave him a flick on the neckwhen we got close to the other horse [Orthodox Lad]. When I dropped the stick he tried to duck in behind. I feel a bit hard done by but the stewards said six is six." |
By:
I've watched the replay of Hughes' ride six times and for the life of me counted 5 not 6 hits. This whole situation,(even if it was six) is absurd. Has anyone out there other than the Stewards counted six?
By:
Timing is a disaster.IF it had to be introduced next season would have been first choice.
By:
slap down the neck
By:
For every smack over the limit, you should demote the horse 1/2 length.
By:
just watched it back again, he hit it twice put stick down, hit it twice put stick down, granted he did hit it half a dozen times late on but was hardly brutal imo.
breaking habits will always be hard to do, like bad habits you pick up driving. the horse was hanging, ok the rules are set in stone but this is going to kill the game stone dead if that ride is deemed so bad. 15 days very very harsh imo |
By:
Unbiased - The, "timing," was deliberately today - so that it was in place for this coming Saturday's 'Champions Day' at Ascot.
The BHA and, more so, Racing for Change are under the DELUSION that the WHOLE WORLD will be watching their jamboree. Anybody would think that all Premiership football has been cancelled - and Asda and Tesco's are closing for the afternoon. |
By:
maybe wrong but would guess 99% have never had a problem with the whip issues and animal welfare.
By:
onlooker has a valid point imo.
By:
Onlooker, nail on head imo
By:
agree also with onlookers post,
maybe they are trying to justify their overpaid existence. maybe they have shot themselves in the foot with the timing issue. |
By:
Agree, the menace of television and the media!
By:
It's since they banned parents and teachers hitting kids. In this day and age you are not even allowed to kick a dog. Bring all that back and public wouldnt be worried about the horses.
By:
think the majority on here care for horses welfare and dont want to see a horse thrashed in a finish. rides like quealys in the breeders cup are highlighted and criticised but was there a massive problem in the UK with these type of rides?
i agree that the rules had to be looked at but bringing these unworkable and unmanageable rules at this time is madness and a panic solution imo |
By:
Cheltenham could be interesting - assuming there are enough jockeys available are the Stewards going to watch each race 20 odd times and count the whips for every horse? Even then they are bound to miss a few - and what about courses where the view is obscured for a few secs?
By:
So Hughes used the whip to correct his mount from drifting in to another horse yet was banned on it... hmmm.
Wonder what the law is about danger in the work place. Imagine if he had not used the whip and brought down another horse, the jockey ended up in ICU. Then he gets sued, has to sue the BHA for restricting him and forcing him to ride in a gung hoe manner in order to sta within some un workable rules. |
By:
it's obvious why they hot them over the limit.....look at BF SP versus industry SP...both were expected. Fox will be looked after I am sure.

By:
Now that denathorn is a very good point indeed.
By:
I think ALL the jockeys should use the whip 6 times in the final furlong.
They can't ban them all. There would be no racing and no jobs for these tin pot Hitlers. They would have to pull the rule. |
By:
trusty.... look at the ride, he tried to win that is all. the experts on racing Uk didnt even pick up on it at the time. it wasnt a win at all cost ride.
By:
K.fox an appreentiece gets 15 days.If he were to get just 2 rides
per day comes to more than 3k I reckon. Not on really for someone doing his job, alot of money to lose. |
