Now that the proper stuff is almost upon us thoughts are wandering toward the HCGC,KG,GC etc.

I know at least one who rates Time For Rupert as one to usurp Long Run,cant buy that on any known reasoning.

I have no interest in this CASLESS person. I was pointing you in the direction of something that COULD beat Long Run. You can forget about Kauto Star and Denman. Too old at 12 these days.

Report Molerat • October 5, 2011 11:26 PM BST
I know what you meant SS (in both cases).Cant see how you can write KS and Denman off just on age grounds.Modern thinking seems to write NH horses off at 10 and yet there is no reason why a 12yo cannot win a big one or 13 for that matter.
Report Busvaldo • October 5, 2011 11:28 PM BST
No doubt you will be chalking them up appropriately!Laugh

Evs each of 2 to pick up a Grade 1 this season.[;)]
Report denathorn • October 5, 2011 11:31 PM BST
Kauto and denman havent been overly raced, should get at least 1 more great run from them. Not sure about cheltenham, imperial could do it there, but the KG and maybe the hennesey

Schooled very well recently, always was going to be a chaser.Very interesting this season.[;)]
Report salmon spray • October 5, 2011 11:35 PM BST
Last 12-y-o to win The Gold Cup was What A Myth in 1968. Tied Cottage was admittedly the moral winner about 30 years ago. But fewer big races are won by older horses now. May be training methods or possibly smaller fence or even breeding. Kauto Star was still at his best at 9,slightly surprisingly for a French-bred but has been going gradually downhill since. Denman has looked fragile since his Gold Cup win though obviously he has come up with the odd exceptional performance. I think you will see them both have no more than 2 races then be retired. Pity because if the handicapper was realistic they copuld win something like the Whitbread but not off 170.
Report Molerat • October 5, 2011 11:35 PM BST
No problem cashless,KG and GC more than paid for any future upsets.[;)]
Report denathorn • October 5, 2011 11:35 PM BST
Idk about that, Longrun defo is the one to take over the mantle over the coming years, he is that good. If kauto, denman or imperial fail to deliver this year then it will be all Longrun. He is gonna be a great horse.
Report Far From Trouble • October 5, 2011 11:36 PM BST
Weapon's Amnesty in the Gold Cup if back to the way he was before

Captain Chris may do him at Kempton

Don't think Long Run is all he's cracked up to me, may have to learn the hard way though Laugh

Brother,its all a mind game!Laugh
Report Molerat • October 5, 2011 11:39 PM BST
FFT how can you say that about a horse so young who has already won a KG and GC,beating the best chasers around?

Including the best Kempton horse since Dessie and probably the best ever KS.Shocked
Report Far From Trouble • October 5, 2011 11:42 PM BST
Think both pieces of form are suspect.

Only serious challenger at Kempton bled and didn't run his race, Riverside Theatre a doubtful 3 miler although decent at Kempton

Gold Cup form questionable at best, given how Denman and Kauto looked to have him cooked at the top of the hill but the old guard tired towards finish, and Long Run just kept on. Look at the rest of the field in behind, they all come back to them as if they ran on at the finish

He isn't the second coming imo, but obviously he has to be respected
Report Molerat • October 5, 2011 11:43 PM BST
Clock at Kempton didnt lie despite any others not firing.
Report Far From Trouble • October 5, 2011 11:45 PM BST
Suppose it doesn't but race times are misleading imo, a lot depends on how the races are run.
Report Busvaldo • October 5, 2011 11:46 PM BST
Clock at Kempton means sweet FA as you well know....
Report RyanWe • October 5, 2011 11:49 PM BST
I still don't think that LR jumps well enough and I really don't believe that he beat a Denman or Kauto Star at their peaks. They aren't/weren't even 90% the same horses imo.

We'll see though.
Report Molerat • October 5, 2011 11:51 PM BST
Apart from visual evidence it is fairly reliable busvaldo,LR was about 4 secs faster than KS was in his[;)] previous years romp.
Report revedesivola • October 5, 2011 11:51 PM BST
master minded romps the kg[;)]Cool
Report Molerat • October 5, 2011 11:54 PM BST
Always respect your views ryan but he has never looked like falling, slight lack of confidence from SWC was the problem imo, slightly hesitant at his fences, not now.

Thats the tricast sorted again reve.Cool[;)]
Report snorlax • October 5, 2011 11:54 PM BST
Weapons Amnesty if his injury has left no long term scars is a challenger for the Gold cup, same with Pandorama if somehow the heavens open around March [;)]
Report denathorn • October 5, 2011 11:55 PM BST
reve, if he does then ruby walsh is a lying cnunt, cause I remember a comment he made 2-3 years ago. Asked whether Master minded would stay 3 miles he said "He wouldnt get 3 miles in a plane"
Report flushgordon1 • October 5, 2011 11:56 PM BST
whos to say that last season might not be long runs best season, a lot of french breds form tails of very quickly at 7 or 8 and they were very good young horses.
i could see bostons angel and magnanimity both by winged love improving again this season and although the sun alliance has not been a great race and second season chasers find it hard i think last years race just might be the exception.

Just being facetious flush but I do think LR is going to be similar,NH will be very careful with his campaigning.

But Dessie did mange to give a Irish Hennessey winner weight and a thumping at the age of 12 at Sandown

Just think what he would have been rated with Phil in charge??
Report Molerat • October 6, 2011 12:47 AM BST
Times have changed zilzal, not so many old fashioned bred chasers and not so many running at 11 or 12.Still no reason why KS or Denman dont have one left in them imo.
Report zilzal1 • October 6, 2011 12:51 AM BST
Old chasers go quickly between 11 and 12, cant see either of them winning a grade one unless its really weak
