Tony Charlesworth, that was him Ribero1. Apologies.
There was a hole under the fence to get into the Ripon course side I'd dug as a young 'un. Twas better than asking an adult 'mind if I can come in with you Mr'. Easy to get those 25p each ways on as an early teen with several bookies in the mid to late 80s. Bit trickier for the youth of today I would imagine. The above wasn't one you could get on with I should add.. |

G is for Graham Green. Most dapper bookmaker you could imagine. Used to arrive in a Rolls Royce to the races with some beauty on his arm. Passed away following fight against big C. Everytime I paid my bets after the race he used to say "Taaaaa Kiiiidddd".

When I used to live in the North West, I don't suppose anyone knows the guy who used to trade at Port Sunlight and St.Helens dogs and had a missus who looked Fillipino, she was quite a tasty girl. He used to wear a sheepskin jacket with blondish hair and a moustache. Also at St.Helens would be Pat Whelan who layed at White City Liverpool. On the other side of the track at White City was a guy who used to wear a camel coat and I remember his generosity one week when I'd lost my Mum's wages and he gave me enough to cover them and a stern lecture. Decent guy.

By:
G-Jimmy Grey,The very sociable gent who traded as Matt Lowery Newcastle, pure old barsteward when on the stool but away from the course he was a pleasure to have a drink with.
H-Jim Hepburn (Heppie),Scottish Bookie, would argue with his own shadow on course but once again get him away from the course & he was good company. Both real characters who have unffortunately passed away. |

Just a follow on to the above re: White City, Liverpool. I remember a Ladbrokes rep. setting up a pitch one night, a few yards away from the other boards but at an angle so he could see what they were chalking up. He was always the last to put his prices up (what's new?) but I think the more established bookies soon pulled the carpet from under him because he disappeared after a couple of weeks, never to be seen again. At the time I felt sure the other bookies were wheeling and dealing to make sure he took some big hits. Or does that sort of thing not happen?

I once said to Alec about the rabbit following him about,he replied that he wished he could employ him as he was so sharp.
What the rabbit had sussed out was that, when Alec laid a thick un on the phone he used to stand up straight & the shoulders went back.On these occasions the rabbit knew the money was going to fly around the ring so he watched what Alec was betting then he took off & backed it. |
