the guy who used to compile all the speed ratings ,he used to have his own section in the weekender, most people regarded him as the best in that sphere [;)] used to talk about dosage index ,to determine if a horse could stay e.t.c his system works 99% off the time .

Dancing Brave clocked the last 5 furlongs of the Arc quicker than the winner of the prix De labbaye that same year.
That may mean very little tho as the veteran Carraciola clocked the last 6 furlongs of the Queen Alexandra quicker than the 6f Golden Jubilee in 2009 winner the same day either the clerk had waterd out the bias & more on the stands side overnight or henderson was keeping a sprinting stars true talent hidden you decide.

Dublin Lad.... pity it was only for 4 furlongs, majority of the time. Rambling river, only a handicapper but as fast as anything in the final furlong if the gaps came!

i was privileged to be at Haydock to see the fastest horse in the world-the mighty KLUTE or as i call it the fat useless shirehorse-KLUTE
More seriously the fastest i ever saw in the flesh was Dayjur, the day he won in Haydock he showed scintillating speed and cetainly had the wow factor

You beat me to it Gerry, I was going to say Brondesbury as well. Tony Ives was the pilot if memory serves.

Dancing Braves penultimate furlong in the derby was handtimed at 10.2, his Arc final furlong was calculated at roughly 10.8
Had Dancing Brave saved a bit and not run so fast in that penultimate furlong he would have beaten Shahrastani

Aye Slippy. Saw it win at Epsom on one occasion. It was about 15 lengths clear after two furlongs and the jockey spent the last two furlongs easing it down!

grendel if the great Dancing brave had run the penultimate furlong slower then he would have lost more distance(or not gained as much) on Shahrastani. I think if grev had kept him a closer early doors might have been a better option

geoff m his final furlong was about 11.8, so you can see how uneconomically he ran the last 2 ... if he ran the penultimate furlong at say 11.1 he could easily have run the final furlong in 10.8 and made up the ½ length beaten distance and it would have looked even more spectacular

Following on from Wollow conversation Blackbarn Ironically think it was also a Hobbs horse(sure this 1 ran 2nd) to Amaranda. She had run placed on debut @ Craven meeting.
