mentalbird - thanks for that. I didn't manage to pick him out first time, will have another go. Out And About was a favourite of many, as he always went off in a clear lead. Looked like a 2.5 miler on that showing. Did well to get as far as he did over those fences as he looked knackered soon after half way.

Sage I have written on another thread recently re the 1963 Hennessy. I had Mill House backed that day and having seen the race I reckoned that MH had been very lucky and would be very unlikely to ever beat Arkle again. Arkle had made a very bad mistake at one of his fences and in addition he was just out of his novice season whereas MH was the reigning Gold Cup winner. We will never know how good Flyingbolt was but leaving him aside I reckon if Arkle had never esisted then Mill House would even now be considered the greatest steeplechaser ever. And of course he would have won at least 3 Gold Cups. That fact alone tells us how good Arkle really was.

There were, I think, only 2 races that Flyingbolt and Arkle both contested (not in the same year, of course) - the Irish Grand National, and the Massey-Ferguson - both handicaps. In both, it can be argued, Flyingbolt comes out ahead. He bolted up by 15 lengths in the Massey-Ferguson, carrying, I think, 12-6, and cantered home in the Irish National giving away 3 stone. Arkle was beaten in the first (admittedly carrying 12-10, and only 7 days after winning the Hennessey), and struggled to win in the 2nd. Flyingbolt was probably more precocious - but it's hard to pin him down because he was basically done at 7 because of brucellosis.

I was always a great admirer of the Jim Joel NH horses - he always had some classy animals - in the famous black colours with the red cap. One of the most beautiful, but ultimately disappointing, horses was one he had I think trained by Andy Turnell...I´m pretty sure it was called Midnight something...Anyone remember? It was a 2.5-3m hurdler/chaser, I think it won its first two and looked like it could make up into a world beater over fences but it didn´t go on. A big strong black beast it was...

I wish I could remember what happened to it...if I remember rightly it didn´t turn out to beas good a jumper of fences as its appearance suggested. Lacked a turn of foot I think, more of a staying galloper...?

Just found the form for Midnight Count...from Dec 88 to March 91...12U3B/42U3/55PU4P/
Won first time out, then beaten in a 4 horse race, then went off 4-1 in the Queen Mother Champion Chase won by Barnbrook Again, where he unseated, then all downhill from there...They must have thought it was something special! ...unfortunately for my bank balance it wasn´t... |

You can see (something of) his previous races (before Dec 88) if you click the double arrowhead, pointing left, to the left of his name. It will take you back to his first race (with fewer and fewer details as you go back in time), on Dec 6 1985, when he made his debut in a 2m4f Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham, as a 5yo.

He won that debut at 10/1 from a field of 21, chased home by Oppidan (15-2) and Ramadi Dawn (5-1 jt fav).

I was at the Cheltenham festival when he ran 4th to Pearlyman in '88. It was the only day I've ever been (too crowded for me). I don't remember him at all - I was taken by Desert Orchid vainly chasing Pearlyman, and trying to overcome his right-hand jumping.

His 2nd race was the Tolworth hurdle, at Sandown, which he won at 9-4.

Aah Into View. One of my favourite horses. beat salmon Sprat in a novice chase, starting at 50/1 I think. Then ran in a very memorable 2 mile novice chase at Sandown, ridden by Kelleway, where he was out the back of the telly at the pond fence, then staged a fantastic run to run down the 2 who had been battling for the lead (one of which was Sam Butcher, ridden by Johnny Cook, I think) and storm by up the hill. Then Fred Winter tried to convert him into a Gold Cup horse, as he did with all his best chasers. Didn't quite make it, but did have a set-to with Spanish Steps one day at one of the midlands tracks - came off best I think.
Scot Lane was one of Martin tate's I think. Might have won the 3 mile hcap chase at Cheltenham. |

In the modern NH game, with so many new owners from the City, and so many horses from the flat and France, NH racing seems to have lost so much of the tradition it used to have - the old school trainers like Forster, Rimell, Stephenson and Winter; and the old racing families like Vestey and Joel. One old school trainer I always used to like was Neville Crump, with his horses ridden by David Atkins and Colin Hawkins.
Does anybody remember a lovely big flashy chestnut called Ballet Lord? I always thought he would be something special but I think his jumping let him down... |

Yes indeed. Scot Lane did win the 3 miler at the festival at 20/1, among other races for Tate.
I can see Into View in his black and white colours now, lovely big horse. |

mini me - you'll be happy to learn that old Topsham had a very happy retirement here in Sussex not that far from where you struck that bet. A gentler old soldier you could't wish to meet.
