What a cracking Gold Cup that was when Alverton won - Night Nurse, Brown Lad, Diamond Edge, Gaffer, Royal Mail, Royal Frolic, Tied Cottage and Aldaniti...it seems like we just don´t have races like that any more...or am I just being an old faart?

Shalimar - thanks so much for posting the 1980 Triumph Hurdle Card. My eldest daughter was born in December 1979 and virtually from birth she was POPSI'S JOY. The calendar year 1980 was really rather a good year for me, my daughter, and of course PJ, (who raced till she was 11, and died aged 25.) That 1980 Cesarewich will live me for ever. Lester and I was on at 14's

Still recal the 'Shock Result' , could not imagine a race where Bula & Pendil would both lose .
Bula's defeat in bottomless ground in the Gold Cup of '75 is still the one result that fills my with sadness. |

Sorry Cork, Fairy Fisherman won the Bell that year, six duck eggs and I reckon it had not tried in a race for well over a year. I had 200/8 and 1000/30 was a lot to win when I was on £45 a week. Had 1000/70 Shine On in the last that day as well.
I now back horses to win what I used to stake. It was definitely easier back then. |

Amazing how I struggle to remember recent Grand National winners and can lucidly picture the stuff from that time.I really think the buzz has gone and that's nothing to do with ageing - other rival sports still have that something about them.

Agree, it's just a gimmick to the under 30's, forming background entertainment only to a marathon drinking session. And when these 'fans' leave the course, they'll bet on footy and other sports.

Looking at that Ces field, it seems odd that the only slightly unusual name is Luca's in the trainer column and of the jockeys those well known overseas boyos Thomas, Crossley & Jones....!

Madhatters,I had this debate with someone at work who was saying that footy, cricket, rugby , ect have become dull due to over exposure and back to back televised fixtures .I disagree because its down to choice and you can pick and choose what you like - however,with racing the whole model has gone sour - with flat racing,it's all more diluted than ever before apart from the top 5% of fixtures which are dominated by a more concentrated few than 30 years ago, while Jump racing is being neutered step by step and we have a generation already with children of their own who have no respect for it whatsoever and won't be won over.

Going back to the 75 Gold Cup won by Ten Up, Racing was abandoned after the race and Racing was robbed of the clash between Tamalin and Brown Lad who were due to clash in the big Novice chase on the card
Great memories of the time for me include front running stalwarts such as Glanford Brig and Fighting Taffy and Tree Tangle catching Border Incident on the run in of the Novices final at Ascot. My 1st days racing was when Bula beat Tingle Creek in a match at Sandown and the second was when April Seventh held off the late run of Captain Christy in the Whitbread with my Beloved Crisp in 4th Feck, i feel old |
