the saying..GAME AS A PEBBLE..any ideas why we say it?

nope never heard of it up north, must be a southern thing, unusual though southerners are big softies,so it cant be a southern saying the saying up north goes...GAME AS FOOK..

My old grandad always used the saying his reasoning was a pebble can get thrown, kicked, trod on but was always there for more. I had no reason to question his answer ;)

Pebbles was a very game mare trained by Clive Brittain, when a horse is particularly brave during a race and at the finish, it is reminiscent of some of the performances that Clive's horse produced, the phrase became 'game as a pebble' because 'game as a pebbles' sounds funny.
