yes i do like the saying ,,game as a pebble,,used to describe a gallant horse..for years tho i never really got it,, my only idea is that you throw a pebble into the sea and it always finds its way back to the beach!thus it never gives up? is that the correct assumption?

My old grandad always used the saying his reasoning was a pebble can get thrown, kicked, trod on but was always there for more. I had no reason to question his answer ;)

stems from the first world war.
the Peebles regiment were considered the bravest fighting regiment and thus the phrase "game as the peebles" in the trenches soon developed this got **ised down the years to pebble |

Pebbles was a very game mare trained by Clive Brittain, when a horse is particularly brave during a race and at the finish, it is reminiscent of some of the performances that Clive's horse produced, the phrase became 'game as a pebble' because 'game as a pebbles' sounds funny.
