Difficult to assess until we know whether Tidal Bay is an intended runner (must be worth a shot) but random early thoughts as follows:
Hey Big Spender ran OK at Aintree and is starting to look like a well handicapped horse on his best form (was never right last season). Poungach looked like he'd benefit from a step up to an extended trip in the Badger Ales Chase. One of the most interesting entries is Beeves who jumped superbly for a novice when narrowly failing to give 5lbs to Shutthefrontdoor at Aintree - surely unlikely to run though given the obvious chance held by Sydney Paget who was so impressive at Haydock last Saturday. Pricewise on the case tomorrow - even if you don't like his tips, we should get some indication of running plans from the trainer quotes. |

Explains the collapse in Goonyella's price. He tipped Notre Pere a few years back and given that this horse has the same trainer and has followed the same route - Irish National, Punchestown, Troytown- was an obvious choice. Not sure his running style would suit Chepstow and Silver By Nature is much better in given their Punchestown running. That said, he's only 6, is carrying a lot less than Notre pere and may have the assistance of Mr Flynn so plenty of positives. Price has gone now though.

Im on Sydney Paget at 25's but cant say Im best pleased with a 13lb hike. Time to lay off maybe, especially as they may wait for the National Trial in Feb. Emperors Choice at 25's could be worth a look as he mugged McCains horse on the line at carlisle last season before beating subsequent Midlands National winner Big Occassion at Lingers - excuses for last 2 runs (ground and reappearance). Another at 25's to take the eye is Saffron De Cotte who has course form, beat Godsmejudge on chase debut ( now 148) then ran 3rd in a cracking novice at Haydock (1st Poungach now 143, 2nd Super Duty now 148, 4th Knock a hand 133 and 5th Gullinbursti now 148, getting in here off 130. Stable has made a great start and he reappears at carlisle now weights are out (Edmond won it under a penalty) and wouldnt be surprised if he goes close. Cant have it deep enough.

By:
nice voucher, betily - can see your point about the hike but he really did win with any amount in hand on Saturday.
Where did they say that they might wait for Haydock in Feb? I must have missed that. |
|
By:
Where did you get 25's from? Best I see was 12's!
I like Global Power for this but not sure if he'll get in off 128. Needs loads to drop out. Anyone know the max field size? He has good course form, 235, and loves Heavy ground. Only had 7 chase starts, 2 wins, and trainer reckons he has know learnt how to train him, only a 7yo. The race he won last time out at Carlisle was also won by Silver By Nature several years ago before he went on to finish 2nd at Chepstow so a good guide. Just needs to get in. I'll take a chance and back him as he has been confirmed for this race by trainer and if he does make the cut he'll be 16/1 or 14/1. |

Placed in a National
Likes heavy going run ok at Chepstow in the past over hurdles ran in the race that last years winner ran in at Cheltenham Trainer won it before Owner won it before Step forward Tour Des Champs 25-1 |

cheers Angel.
I believe the sponsors were 20/1 about Sydney when betting first opened. |

By:
Reaseheath - they havent said as much but if they do duck the race then Haydock is the obvious next step given the hike in its ratings. I know Miko De Beuchene did the double and silver by nature almost did but off 145 it would be difficult.
Sint - there was plenty of 25's before he won at Haydock (mines with bet365). I took the view that he was fancied for saturday and given he had won impressively at Chepstow in a novice chase last season was worth risking. Thankfully he won (backed him saturday too!) but I think that 13 lb is a big rise though I beleieve Notre Pere defied a similar rise a few years back. Theres actually plenty with chances at this stage. Steamship - Tour des Champs is a horse I like but I wouldnt agree that he likes heavy. I think a better surface - like many Robin Des Champs - suits him better. Mind you, his trainer doesnt seem to agree, this was a quote after he won at Ludlow last december. "He has jumped and stayed very well in that testing ground so we might be thinking in terms of the Welsh National in a year´s time" - Nigel Twiston-Davies, trainer. To my eye his wins in bad ground came in small fields, his better runs in better ground came in bigger fields. Think he will pick up something decent this season though. Money for Saffron Du Cotte today too. |

paraphrasing a few of this mornings trainer quotes:
Sydney Paget - could go back to Haydock for Tommy Whittle because he's won there or to Leoapardstown for Paddy Power Chase because it's worth a lot of money - participation of Tidal Bay at Chepstow might be deciding factor because SP would have a nice weight then. Goonyella - Welsh National is the target Highland Lodge - what happens in Hennessy will determine his participation but if Hennessy and Welsh National were run on consecutive days, he'd be running in Welsh National (presumably she means she thinks Welsh National is more suitable race) Jonjo - yes but no but yes but no but if but maybe Nicholls - Tidal Bay dropped 8lbs makes Welsh National attractive option, they'll look at Lexus but Welsh National might suit him. Hawkes Point (if TB runs) and Join Together other stable possibles/probables.Did n't mention his other entries King - Godsmejudge unlikely, Sandown a week on Saturday and Warwick in Jan are the plans. Midnight Appeal, maybe but will decide after he's had a go over Aintree fences next weekend. Pipe - Amigo probably, I'm not giving you any hints about the others Mullins - too early to say, no way am I giving you any clues to tip one of mine up antepost Well Refreshed - Welsh National is target, race should be ideal will run at Sandown next week first Sherwood agrees with sint that Global Power might not get in but this is the plan and he won't run before. Handy Andy and Hey Big Spender are probables but Handy Andy runs at Newbury on Saturday first Will Safran de Cotte get in? If Tidal Bay runs, Hey Big Spender will feel like he's running loose with 10-3 (won't be the only one to be fair). I remember they wanted to target the race last year but had an interrupted prep and could n't get him ready in time. The stats boys will tell you he can't win 'cos he's 10. Anyway, as I don't have the fancy prices about Sydney Paget, I don't see much point in getting involved until the field becomes a bit clearer. |

Im sure they have made similar comments about Tidal Bay before and not ran him (though in fairness they did have a pop at the Hennessy last season under a big weight). Just wonder whether they will chance SP in the race if TB doesnt run given he is only 6 and is so well thought of?
I wouldnt worry about any horse not getting a run as stacks will fall by the wayside before the day as it doesnt tend to be the sort of race that horses miss the cut in. I agree that Hey Big Spender would be a big e/w player off that weight given he was running well in the race 2 years back before falling. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then but looked in good fettle at Aintree last month and it would make a nice change for the horse not to lumping 11-12 in a handicap as he normally does! |
|
By:
I hope Tidal Bay comes out tbh. Gonna put some out of the weights otherwise or make jock bookings very complicated.

Could end up with egg on my face here if he wins on Saturday but why not just save him for Wales? He'll get his ground there and have more time to get over his big effort of trying to give 26lb to Standing Ovation last time out. Surely that would have taken something out of him imo. |
|
By:
she said with the Welsh National there is always a weather concern and he's well enough to have a crack at the Hennessy.
Can understand it, nearly 5 weeks since he ran so they'd be between a rock and a hard place if Welsh National abandoned or postponed |
|
By:
...also I suppose after last season's nightmare she's keen to run them whilst they're in good form and rude health.
Of course, she might end up with egg on her face if he has a tough race on Sat without winning, then she runs him in Welsh National unsuccessfully and that leaves a mark on him for the rest of the season. |
|
By:
yes fair point, best to run them when fit and well.
|

By:
Sustained support for Safron De Cotte (25's to 16's) and not pricewise inspired either. Due out on Sunday at Carlisle which suggests a big run is expected and stable going very well.

By:
always thought this race was made for merry king, todays run in the hennessy as not put me off.
|
|
By:
Generally speaking you want to avoid any horses who ran in the hennessy in this race, not enough recovery time between the two.

I quite like Hawke's Point, before Cheltenham he had beaten Gullinbursti and also finished 2nd to Harry Topper and in front of Bensalem and Pearlysteps. Those lines of form suggest to me he is a mid 140s horse, and you'd think from watching his races the welsh national would be ideal as he had looked a dour stayer until the cheltenham run. I have had some small amounts on here at 28 and 30 so far.

Alfie Sherrin jumps off the page for me. Trainer has a fine record in such races and thought he ran a cracker against some unexposed types in the Fixed Brush hurdle. Not that many miles on the clock for a 10 year old and stamina assured, think he has to be on anyone's short list.

Im not a trends man but Ive always made it a rule not to back ANYTHING that ran in the Hennessy in the Welsh National - just feel its an after-thought rather than the plan (my records go back 18 years and the winner has never come from the race). I broke that rule a few years back and fell for High Chimes after a staying on 6th in Hennessy. Welsh trainer, won on heavy, Chepstow form etc. etc. Ran a stinker and pulled up. Will never do it again.
As for a 10 year old winning it... Riverside Boy, 1993. Only Martin Pipe when he won it 5 years in 6 managed to pull it off. Save your money on Alfie Sherrin and back him for Aintree, for that surely is the plan. Just remember Richie McLernon after he won at the festival 2 years back immediately saying he would love to ride him around the national fences as hes some tool. Jonjo plays the long game, as we all know, and my moneys down already - 33-1 5 places at Betvictor. |
|
By:
Yes Alfie Sherrin is a national plot, ran last week in same hurdle race as sunnyhillboy did on route to his great run at Aintree.
Heavy ground would be against Alfie as well |
|
By:
Synchronised ran in the same race too before his win in the Lexus. Jonjo clearly uses it as a prep for one of his best staying chasers.

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh about Alfie

Alfie? Alfie who?
![]() Anyhoo, thats Safron de Cotte off my WN shorltlist after that laboured performance. Strong in the market today which suggests this wasnt a warm-up and well backed ante post last couple of days.. I pressumed they had waited for the weights to come out to run him under a penalty so all in all a pretty mediocre performance. Hoping to see Emperors Choice entered up at Chepstow next weekend. |
|
By:
pretty encouraged by HBS effort yesterday, over a distance short enough on a flat track and on ground as lively as he would want plus the first two pulled well clear and the second appears to be an animal of some potential (but I'm biased so I would say that!)
Another to catch my eye on a circumstantial basis is One in a Milan - trainer on record as stating he knows the horse is well handicapped and looks like he might have had his mark protected for this - he's entered over fences at Ludlow on Wednesday so we might learn a bit more then. The weather is becoming a slight cause for concern - don't think I'm alone in assuming this will be a slog in the mud but it's been unseasonally dry and there is virtually no rain in the forecast for Monmouthshire over the next 10 days, they race at Chepstow next Saturday so let's see how the track is riding then. Appreciate it's the best part of a month away yet and both weather and forecast can change quickly. |
|
By:
It was a good effort by HBS though he obviously gets a penalty so is a little less attractively handicapped now than he was. He does, however, go into the race in form, unlike some. He's a funny horse as Ive always had him down as a mudlark but arguably his best last 5 or 6 runs have been on g/s or better so maybe a slog in the Chepstow mud (assuming it does rain at some point!) is not what he needs.
I read the same Evan Williams article (may have been the RP stable tour) about One In A Milan but cant say there was much encouragement at Ffos las the other week and he has been guilty of bigging up a horse in the past to no avail. See if he runs Wednesday. |
|
By:
Jonjo is a master when he steps up horses markedly in trip but have to agree on previous form Alfie doesn't want a slog. If it was unusually decent ground then big big chance as I think he has to go up a few pounds to get into the Grand National. Hate to be boring but I do think if it's heavy then Goonyella will be a massive player, really like his Troytown run finished behind some decent sorts in Mad Brian who I think has a big handicap in him and Colbert Station a decent yardstick. It wasn't enough of a test for him and if he gets the usual Welsh National conditions he is the horse to beat as he is only 6yo and lightly raced.

Owner is saying Rocky Creek will run here .. presumably off 156 or thereabouts? He'll need to be a better horse than Synchronised to win off that mark. He'll make the market for the rest.
|
|
By:
Have backed Ace High and not too worried if he's a few pound wrong at the weights if Tidal Bay runs and even better if hr doesn't. Acts really well round the track and I thought a cracking first run for D.Pipe last time at Haydock. Travelled like the best horse IMO and will be bottom weight not top weight on favoured track.

Hadnt looked at Ace High shockster but has to be of interest. Cant knock his novice win at Chepstow beating Duke of Lucca and Teaforthree hands down despite some iffy jumps and a tendancy to go right which appears to have stayed with him up until his debut for Pipe the other saturday. Was apparently injured after that but had been targeted at last seasons Hennessy until a bad run at Ascot (that was just prior to Dartnall having to shut down because of the herpes virus so may have been one of the affected horses as he ran no sort of race that day). Guess you can forgive his first run back (unlike his owners
) and lots to like about his Haydock run, particularly if theres more to come. If there is, he could be well handicapped and he looks a big horse so a light weight would be good. Hasnt been committed to the race yet but there will be worse 33-1 pokes on the day if he turns up. Still not entirely convinced by his jumping, however. |
