Every spring the Melbourne Cup field of final acceptances is released on the Saturday before Melbourne Cup Day. That Saturday is Victoria Derby Day and the live announcement of the Melbourne Cup field is made from Flemington directly after the day’s racing action at around 5:30pm (VIC time).

This means that the 2013 Melbourne Cup Final Field will be released on Saturday November 2, 2013.

It is a long process to whittle down all the hopeful horses to reveal the official Melbourne Cup field. Things start at the beginning of September when the Melbourne Cup nominations are taken, numbers usually exceeding 150 early entries.

First declaration stage narrows down the number of Melbourne Cup horses a month later at the start of October but as much as half.

Second declarations follow about three weeks on at the end of October before the final declaration or acceptance stage on Victoria Derby Day.

Thank you both, gentlemen, but we surely could without this LYNTON CROSBY who seems to have a deep hatred of we Brits, perhaps his great grandfathers accommodation did not suit!!!!!!!!

Have there been rule changes whereby a bet on the MELBOURNE CUP  can be paid out by BETFAIR, if successful,
or do the winnings remain in the AUSTRALIAN WALLET?

It's up on Racing Victoria's site. Tres Blue is 12th on order of entry so would comfortably get in, not sure if he's gone to Australia yet though. Maybe he goes out with the 2nd batch of internationals.

yes, it was mentioned on twitter a few days ago that the sale was still subject to vets. That was from the French journalist who sparked that rumour last year on the eve of the arc that Danedream would be returning, so who knows.

Last year I think Fiorenete arrived with the later flight of internationals. Personally it wouldnt bother me, some seem to thrive at Werribee and do very well without a prep run, Fiorente, Red Cadeaux

I've backed Tres Blue at 33-1, followed him since his decent third to Flintshire in June and looks a good type for this race. He's tough, likes a battle and stays very well. His price at the moment is too big and if Flintshire runs well Sunday it will look even better! His new owners sound bullish about his chances and he's a guaranteed starter, number 12 on the list.

Tres Blue

Australian syndicator Bruce Slade has completed the purchase of Melbourne Cup entry Tres Blue with the northern hemisphere-bred three-year-old to race at the spring carnival for the Gai Waterhouse stable.

Tres Blue, currently 12th on the order of entry and guaranteed a start in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 5 under 51kg, will run in the colours of Slade’s new syndication company Round Table Racing.

Tres Blue has been purchased in a deal put together by James Harron Bloodstock.

The son of Anabaa Blue has won his latest two starts in France at Group level over 2500m and at weight for age, beating strong competition including Cirrus Des Aigles, the world’s highest rated horse currently in training.

“He has winning weight for age form around the leading chances for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and in the past couple of weeks the form around him has just got stronger and stronger,” said Slade, a long time associate of the Waterhouse stable as her bloodstock director.

“He is an elite class racehorse who is set to carry a very light weight in this year’s Melbourne Cup. That has to make him a leading chance.”

Tres Blue will follow the same path taken by the Waterhouse import Fiorente last spring by having his first Australian start in the Melbourne Cup.

“Just like Fiorente, Tres Blue will be quarantined in Newmarket before arriving in Australia on October 19 to finish off his Cup preparations at Werribee under the care of Gai Waterhouse,” Slade said.

“He is the perfect horse to launch Round Table Racing. I have always had the dream of one day bringing success and enjoyment to people through thoroughbred racing.

“My time with Gai has taught me that Group 1 results come through sourcing the highest quality bloodstock and managing them carefully.

“In Tres Blue I believe we have the first box ticked, the rest is now up to our team.”

Not a bad run from Penglai Pavilion in the Arc to give Tres Blue form another little boost. I think I might have another dabble at 33-1 EW, even though 3 yr olds haven't got a great record in the race.

One of the Euros. Waldpark and Masked Marvel running in G1 mile races over there is trolling. LOL. As a result Waldpark trades at 170 for the Cup, PDL at 10. Madness. PDL completely unproven at the top level over longer distances. Weight no advantage either. Waldpark with the far better pedigree. All the best form over 12f and the dam won the German St.Leger over 2800 metres. Old trainer Woehler knows how to train a two miler. Altano just won the Prix du Cadran. Waldpark finishing a head behind Novellist in a Gr.2 in May and hasn´t been given a hard race or a suitable trip since. Horse must be training like **** to be that price.

Thanks MrDinos. I've been having a look at the card, and think i'll have a shot at this race. With regards to Simenon, i doubt he will run off 8st 6. He'd have to win the powers stakes on saturday, which i think would inflict a penalty.

Fiorente was always held in high regard by Stoute. I like the fact he is by Monsun too as he should really come into his own over 2m which he proved when 2nd last year. He wont mind the ground whether it's firm of soft. He is 6/1 Favourite for the race currently and not been missed by the bookies. Are they intending to run him again before the race?

Gai Waterhouse content as Fiorente shows potential in Turnbull

GAI Waterhouse is on target to notch her first Melbourne Cup after Fiorente, runner-up in the great 3200m last year, stormed into equal favouritism with Puissance De Lune after the pair excelled despite not winning the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.

Fiorente, brilliant winner of the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley three weeks ago, showed the same blistering finishing burst to come from last of 16 at the 400m of the 2000m race to be beaten only a length into fourth place.

Puissance De Lune, courtesy of a brilliant rails-hugging ride by Glen Boss but handicapped by a too firm track, was runner-up in a Group 1 for the second time at Flemington in a month, this time beaten a short neck after losing the Makybe Diva Stakes by a half-head.

Corporate bookmakers responded immediately to the performance of both. Sportsbet kept the Darren Weir-trained grey solid at $6 for the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup, but shaved Fiorente from $8 to share favouritism.

“Given her effort to finish runner-up in the Cup last year and the super form she is showing now, Fiorente deserves to be right at the top of Cup betting,” said Sportsbet’s Haydn Lane.

Betstar made Fiorente the $5 outright Cup favourite, with Alan Eskander saying he also will be hard to beat in the Cox Plate, for which he is the $5.50 equal second favourite (with Puissance Du Lune) behind Atlantic Jewel ($4).

Puissance De Lune, who has dominated Cup betting, has slipped from favouritism with Sportingbet, according to Michael Felgate. The bookmaker has Fiorente at $6, Hawkspur at $7 and Puissance De Lune now at $7.50.

The TAB installed Fiorente the $6 favourite, ahead of Puissance De Lune and Hawkspur at $7.

Hawkspur, who ran home from 15th at the 400m to finish fifth in the Turnbull in a similarly impressive effort to Fiorente, has firmed to $5 favourite for the Caulfield Cup with the TAB.

His Chris Waller-trained stablemate Royal Descent is the $7 second favourite after fading to finish 11th.

Puissance De Lune’s trainer Darren Weir, although a tad frustrated by another second in a Group 1, said the grey was on target for both the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.

“He is racing well and I’m sure the cushion in the track at Moonee Valley will suit him much better,” he said.

In other Cup news, Sea Moon was first past the post in the Bart Cummings (2520m) but beaten on protest by Araldo. He gained confidence after two unlucky runs and will press on for a Cups campaign, according to Nick Williams.

Another Lloyd and Nick Williams galloper, Seville, won the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m) and firmed from $51 to $26 in the Melbourne Cup.

Happy Trails, so underrated as a now dual Group 1 winner, unfortunately was overshadowed by all the Cups and Cox Plate activities.

He won the Turnbull and firmed from $67 to $26 for the Cox Plate for a delighted trainer Paul Beshara, who this week must face a stewards inquiry for allegedly treating the horse on the day of the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley three weeks ago.

“Maybe he will get the recognition he deserves now,” Beshara said after the gelding added the Turnbull to last year’s Emirites Stakes success.

Fawkner, also in the Williams camp, finished third and has firmed in the Caulfield Cup to $26 with Nick Williams saying he is the camp’s best chance of winning the race.

Simeon - 8st 6Lbs, number 32 in the list of 134,M.Cup 2 Miles.
Btn in Group 1+2 races this year, has a nice weight, but is he quick enough??.

TOP Irish stayer Simenon was cut to 16-1 (from 25) by Paddy Power for next month's Emirates Melbourne Cup after posting a solid prep run when finishing a close-up third behind the former Sir Michael Stoute-trained Sea Moon on his Australian debut at Caulfield.
Runner-up in both the Ascot Gold Cup and Lonsdale Cup at York this summer, Simenon was shuttled out to Australia last month in an attempt to secure his place in the Flemington showpiece.
Although the six-year-old missed out on victory in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes, trainer Willie Mullins was still thrilled with the performance as Simenon missed out on second by a short head to Oasis Bloom, with Sea Moon a further three-quarters of a length in front.

TRES BLUE UPDATES

RacingNetwork.com.au

Gai Waterhouse is looking forward to this coming Saturday not just because she has two runners in the $2.65 million Caulfield Cup (2400m).

Gai will put the saddles on former Irish gallopers Glencadam Gold and Julienas in the Caulfield Cup, but her attention earlier in the day will be drawn to the Werribee Quarantine Centre.

Her latest international arrival will be the highly-rated Tres Blue, a horse purchased and sent to Australia with one race in mind – the Melbourne Cup.

“I’m excited about him, can’t wait to see how he has travelled when he gets here on Saturday morning,” Waterhouse told Racing Network this morning.

“He’s a beautiful horse, totally different to Fiorente, but I’ve been studying his videos and watching his form and he’s an exciting horse with genuine class,” she settled.

“I’m really looking forward to him arriving.”

Today's update on Tres Blue. His UK prep could not have gone better. Now wishing him the safest of travels to Aus.
