is darlan a deffo runner in fighting fifth

hes got 19 lbs to find on official ratings with rock on ruby. im not saying he wont win but its not hard to see why hes 4/1. some would argue 4/1 is too short

surely the chance of him unseating has to be entered into calculation of a value price. imo he has a greater chance of unseating if hes doing handstands

Wouldnt back any of Hendersons horses given numerous horses over past 2 seasons not showing inc 2 last weekend fraught with danger, and no darlan at 4s not great price if all turn up imo.

sorry but nobody is going to be able to give you a definite answer, hendo wouldn't point anybody in the right direction for a p1ss

however he did mention the fighting fifth as the likely destination in the papers on sunday after he was withdrawn from the racing post handicap

so yeah, assuming he's trying to keep his champion hurdle horses away from each other then i'd say

darlan > fighting fifth
grandouet > bula
binocular > christmas hurdle

looks as likely as anything imo

but rock on ruby and cinders and ashes are pretty much confirmed for the race, surely darlan can't get much shorter in the market unless one of those pulls out?

Newcastle can get testing. No guarantee Darlan runs in that instance unless NJH would be happy to do it off level weights as opposed to the handicap.

Im by no means saying ror isnt a serious horse, hes always there or there abouts but its no coincidence that the front 2 were the front 2 for the entire race whilse ruby and ap were too concedrned with each other.

i mean overturn is a grand sort and looks a fair chaser too but he was regulary put in his place over hurdles time and again. what, has he suddenly improved on his 50th start?

yeh,i do sgree Ruby and AP were a bit too concerned with each other,i was fuming at the time having had a nice price on Bino.But any horse that goes off prominent,quickens off that pace and extends the lead after the last gets my vote as a very good winner of the race.Whatever the opposition got up to!!

At 0/30 with Mr Power, Rock on Ruby is a MUST bet. Current champion, rated 19lbs better that Cinders and Ashes. Ground will be in C&A favour more that ROR but that does not mean he can't run on it. I see no reason why Darlan should turn round the Supreme form, especially on the predicted heavy ground. ROR for me

Sure, C&A has form on heavy, but there's a reason why he's rated 19lbs behind ROR. There's nothing to suggest ROR won't handle heavy, he certainly has the stamina required and is NH bred.

I was a bit disappointed with ROR at Aintree after what I'd rated a pretty decent Champion Hurdle. However, in retrospect the key to this horse appears to be freshness. This is borne out by Fry planning a 3 race campaign for him this year. Just look at his form figures (after his debut) when he's had a lay-off of 2 months or more : 1111.

TBH, I thought 9/4 was a decent price a couple of days ago, so with doubts over the participation of Darlan (even though he'd have plenty to find too), the drift to 3/1+ seems ludicrous to me, so I've topped-up.

The fighting fifth isn't great.  Grandouet wins the Champ Hurdle all day long this is just second fiddle to that, The irish raider will probs win the rest are just high end handicappers who will now want a trip.

Roobuck ROR only other win in his last seven races was a handicap. While Zarkandars only two wins in last 18 months were handicaps also. That means 1st 2nd and 5th could be classified as such although being a young horse there may be hope for Zarkander still.

Arkle the argument you use about Zarkandar is frankly ridiculous being as his last run was after the CH and before he was injured he won graded races at Kempton, Cheltenham and Aintree beating Grandouet on two of those occasions.

Oh and the 3rd and 4th in the CH were the previous 2 winners, one of which is favourite for this years event.

roobuck if your the type of person who chooses horses on quotes in the RP etc etc, it's flowered media son there's nothing else to say, ROR isn't anymore than a high end handicapper.  Listen he was a bumper horse and was put with Fry as they thought peanuts of him at Nichols yard he then started showing a little and had a one off against top types also having a lesser one off after a long season, he wants a trip and doesn't have the speed to win a CH this season, look how he gets outpaced and stays on, soft ground, stiff tracks,galloping tracks all palced... didn't see a race course until late on and now he's getting older he'll be regressing. As for Zarkandar he's a classier type much better breed and ouzes class and constitution but he'll peak too early this season and have his day in the sun before CH, he's not a spring horse.. did you see his seasonal reapperance??? He had a bloody hard race he makes hard work of his races too and therefore he'll be well over the top come CH and certainly won't be fresh. There's your RP quote right after the CH flop and he goes off Fav as he'll of cleaned up before then 'he's had a hard season and this was probably one step too far, we'll freshen him up and let him streghthen up over the winter maybe pop him over a fence in time and step him up in trip he's still low mileage' P Nichols 21.03.13....

ROR is the c hurdler,and no reason why he cannot win again given a similar type of race,which i would think connections will try to achieve.hes still a young horse and was quick enough this year and will be quick enough next year.whether hes the best horse on the day is another matter,but no way would i pooh pooh his chances based on his form thus far.

Grandouet may well beat Zarkandar at a speed track like Aintree but not at Cheltenham. Zarkandar will be fresh for CH, may be the next race after the Bula. Lets chat again after that race....son

Think if Zarkander can turn up in March at his best he will beat Grandouet again.

Trifolium will take his chance in the Grade One StanJames.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle on Saturday.

The five-year-old, third in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham earlier this year, is also engaged in Sunday's Hatton's Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse, but is instead set to cross the Irish Sea.

Trainer Charles Byrnes hopes a wind operation can help him put a disappointing seasonal reappearance behind him.

Byrnes said: "He's definitely running at Newcastle and we're looking forward to the race. He's had a minor wind operation since his last run.

"It's only a small field on Saturday and there is some good prize-money. Hopefully we'll bring a bit of it home with us."

I hope that Ciders wins and have backed him for the CH already but the prices for Saturday make no sense if you look at the RPRs and the market for Cheltenham which makes Darlan, Rock on Ruby and Cinders almost equal prices. The going must be the explanation.

No Darlan or Rock on Ruby on Saturday. ROR will take on Zarkander and Grandnouet in the International Hurdle at Cheltenham in 2 weeks, some race that will be!

Just the four runners confirmed for the Fighting Fifth Hurdle on Saturday: Countrywide Flame, Cinders And Ashes, Bothy and Trifolium.

Big relief to see First Lieutenant declared. backed it at 17 earlier and was horrified to see it at 25 next day. Back to 12.5 now. Might well be a repeat of the RSA with him and Bobs Worth fighting it out.

Has good Cheltenham form, but every other time I see him run, he seems a weak, irresolute type. Can't see him manning up in a grueller like this.
