As you know I'm not the greatest form/time analysis forumite however I am going to York everyday next week, liver functioning properly permitting, and I would like to know what to put my few quid on (also see my thread in the Ebor 2011 bit). I just have a feeling that Bazza is going to clear up. I'll have had a few (guaranteed) snifters and will cry a tear when the great man retires nevertheless let us not forget it's about making a few quid and (eventually) getting back home safely. Much appreciated chaps and thanks in advance.

I've not really looked at much just yet Liberator but do think Await The Dawn is progressive. If the going is Good him and Midday should have a great battle but i'll be backing ATD provided he is odds-against.

Bapak Chinta has the assistance of Paul Hanagan and he'd be my pick for the Nunthorpe, provided again the going is Good. Requinto has been supplemented which is an interesing consideration also.

Not looked at the Ebor or any anything else yet...

Figgis and Co are the people for times etc ..

Have a great week, loto.  My only thoughts for now are that Hills are being optimistic betting 1/5 1,2,3 in the International.  Cirrus ran today so he's not turning up and it seems likely that there will be 7 runners at best.  I've had a dabble on Roderic e/w (although not sure he's a runner either!).  Well worth backing something with a view to getting some advantageous place terms that surely won't be available on Wednesday.  In the Voltigeur, the 25/1 Genius Beast, again e/w with Hills, is worth some friendly fire too.  Looks like he defo runs, Frankie booked, shouldn't be as big as 25.

The opening day (Wednesday) looks very difficult for backers.  In the Acomb Stakes (2.30) I'm prepared to give Fort Bastion another chance, especially if he's a decent each-way price: on the face of it he disappointed last time in the Superlative Stakes (where he started favourite), but I thought that Peslier gave him a poor ride that day and he was never given a proper chance to get into the race.  He's up against no fewer than seven once-raced maiden winners and three other last-time-out winners, and it's anyone's guess which of them will turn out to be the best, but the pick may prove to be Brian Meehan's Archbishop, a lovely sort who won a slowly-run Sandown maiden but looks to have a touch of class.

In the Great Voltigeur (3.05) Al Kazeem and Sea Moon (an erstwhile Derby fancy) are interesting lightly-raced handicap winners, but it's a long time since a horse won this race on the back of a handicap win, so it's best to focus on the runners with solid Group race form and the best of those (by some margin) is Seville, runner-up in two Group 1's and taking a drop in class.  He's probably not going to be a backable price but he's very hard to oppose.  The only concern is the fact that O'Brien has a dreadful record with his three-year-olds over here this season (just two winners from 29 runners).  Namibian is a typically tough Mark Johnston horse, who's won a couple of Group 3 races, but more is needed here.  Genius Beast has some decent bits of form but seems to lack a change of gear.

In the Juddmonte International (3.40) Await The Dawn will be a short price to gain his first Group 1 victory.  He's been impressive in both starts this year and it's hard to pick holes in his form, but if he's too short a price he might be worth taking on with the ultra-consistent Midday, who loves the track and is a proven Group 1 performer.

The opening sprint handicap (2.00) and the nursery (4.15) look impossible to fathom, but in the concluding 10f handicap I'm interested in Barren Brook, a previous York winner who is progressing nicely, has a good turn of foot, seemed to idle in front when winning last time at Doncaster, and this time benefits from the services of Kieren Fallon.  However, a good run from Thimaar in the Great Voltigeur earlier on the card would be a clear pointer to the chances of once-raced maiden winner Eagles Peak, who beat him at Newmarket last month.

Love the short ones, theformman?

Couple more down the swanee today?

FWIW I think the 14/1 Al Kazeem is on the generous side.  His trainer doesn't tend to call geese swans and this horse seems to have been saved for an Autumn campaign, starting on Wednesday.  His Newbury form is solid and it's interesting that they're pitching him in here. Worth a small dabble imo.

I agree re Al Kazeem. Yes it was a handicap, but beat what has turned out to be a field of very progressive horses easily and giving weight. On the book Seville clearly is the one to beat but wouldn't want to take 11/8 about a horse that while has been Group 1 placed, has only one a maiden.

On Thursday I want to be with Vita Nova as likely to be an e/w price. Clearly a lot to find, but again very progressive and whilst the 3yo's will be very hard to beat, Cecil would not pitch her at this level if he didn't think she had a chance.

If it comes up soft for Ebor, then Montaff e/w for me

Good luck all

Grin love a nice rock solid fav i do,

but lets be honest, this is as rock solid as they come, the only unknowen factor in the race is sea moon,he may very well be a very good horse for the future, but he still looked extremely green when winning last time out and after this long break will more than likely need the run and probably wont be upto the task of beating seville in any case,
Seville escapes the 3 pound penalty as he is not a group winner yet and is top top level group 1 horse facing nothing of his level here, form stacks up all over the place in UK,Ireland,USA and France, everything else is playing for place money.

I honestly cant understand why he is not odds on and am certain he will be on the day or sooner and i state again,if he does not win this then i'm giving up

p.s just the one down the swanee today, only backed GLPlain

I think the Voltigeur is extremely tight between the top 3 in the betting. I know many form students will have Seville well on top here but I have only 1 pound between each of them, Namibian, Sea Moon, Seville, in that order. Seville undoubtedly has the most potential judged on what he did as a 2yo but this year, even though he's been running in supposedly better class races, I don't think he's achieved any more than the other two. Like I say, it's possible he could improve here and the margins are so close there's really nothing between them, the pace of the race could make all the difference but the value definitely lies with the other two.

Laugh i was wondering how long it would be before you came on an opposed me figgs,i cant help wondering if i was sint that posted confidence behind seville would your response be the same[;)]
Interesting that you only have 1 pound between them,as timeform have seville 5 pounds ahead of namibian and 11 pounds ahead of sea moon,
Also i find it hard to believe you managed to keep a straight face whilst typing in that Seville 'supposedly' has been running in better class racesLaugh

Seville

Juddmonte Grand Prix De Paris (Group 1)
Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (Group 1)
Investec Derby (Group 1)
tote sport Dante Stakes (Group 2)

Sea Moon

Give Generously To Macmillan Stakes (Handicap)

Namibian

bet3 65 Gordon Stakes (Group 3)
Queen's Vase (Group 3)

ConfusedConfusedConfused i think the above speaks pretty much for itself,i'm not even going to get into naming the difference in quality of horses in these races

Also you seem to have covered youself pretty well (which you seem to do in many threads i have noticed) by saing you believe all 3 can win and conviently saying that seville could 'possibly improve' and if wins you will no doubt say he improved like you stated,
imo it is unlikely that a race fit 3yo colt half way through the season is going to show a great deal of improvement on his last 2 stats, but i dont believe he needs to any case,

lastly, since you have them so close in your ratings are you willing to lay me 3/1 7/2 on seville? i think notMischief

I couldn't disagree more, Figgis (but that's the great thing about this sport, we're all entitled to our opinion).  Seville was beaten 1½ lengths in the Dante by Carlton House (who was beaten about a length in the Derby and finished a close-up fourth in the Irish Derby), with Pisco Sour (subsequent Gr.3 and Gr.2 winner) 2½ lengths back in third; he then failed to handle the track at Epsom (finished tailed off); his next two performances put him well clear of his Great Voltigeur rivals - a close second in the Irish Derby (behind subsequent Gr.1 Secretariat Stakes winner Treasure Beach), in which he reversed Epsom form with the Derby third and fourth, and an excellent second to Meandre in the Gr.1 Grand Prix de Paris where he finished three lengths clear of the previously unbeaten French Derby winner Reliable Man, with Treasure Beach back in fourth.

Namibian, by contrast, has scraped home in a couple of Group 3 races, firstly over two miles from Solar Sky (beaten nearly nine lengths in another Group 3 next time) and then over the Voltigeur distance from Fiorente, Hunter's Light (winner of a Listed race at Hamilton) and Yaseer (tailed off behind Census in the Geoffrey Freer next time).  Sea Moon won a Yarmouth maiden on heavy ground at the end of last season (by a length from Little Rocky, who has been beaten in handicaps off a mark of 87 in his last two starts) and this year has won a 10½f handicap at York off a mark of 92 by a length and three quarters (from a horse that had previously been beaten over six lengths in a similar race at Newmarket).

On all known form Seville is well clear of both Namibian and Sea Moon.  For Seville to get beaten by either of those two, one of them will have to have made considerable improvement (which is quite possible) or else Seville will have to run below his previous form (again, quite possible).  Either way, the odds favour a Seville victory and I wouldn't want to oppose him.

As for those races you mention, the Derby excepted (in which Seville performed abysmally), they were nothing special and typical of many 3yo only group races.

It looks like I also need to explain to you that my aim is to make money at this game, whatever that takes. Strange as it may seem laying 7/2 about available 11/8 chances is not part of my modus operandi. Occasionally I have a strong view and I make that clear, as with Pisco Sour, but many other times I don't know for sure which horse will win, however, this does not stop me from seeking and often finding value in a race. I find this is a better approach for me than crowing to all and sundry that the next short priced favourite cannot possibly get beat, then looking a right **** when it does just that [;)]

Agree with the value approach, but cannot have Sea Moon as value at 7/2.

In it last race, Sea Moon beat Waltz Darling by 10 lengths giving it 3 lbs

Waltz Darling then beaten 27 lengths by Fulgur receiving 2 lbs

In May, Al Kazeem beat Fulgur 3 lengths giving 11 lbs

...and Sea Moon is 7/2 and Al Kazeem is 14/1? I know different races, distance, ground etc, but whilst it may well prove to be a very good horse, 7/2 is no value
By:

When: 15 Aug 11 21:31
My approach is similar, Figgis - I like to find a horse that is bigger odds than it deserves to be.  But on this occasion I can't find a value alternative to Seville and so won't be having a bet (unless there is a gamble on the Stoute horse, in which case I will either lay the Stoute horse or back Seville).  If Seville reproduces either of his last two performances he will win (in my opinion).

I can assure you I am being totally honest in my assessment(not that I'm completely honest about everything in my life but we won't go into that [;)]). Yes you're right, if Seville wins easily I will be inclined to believe he improved but that does not mean I'm covering myself because I would still believe I was right to oppose him at this stage. It's not that unusual for one to improve this late in the season, I've seen it many times over the years and Poet's Voice last year is still fresh in the memory. I'm not even sure how I'm going to play the race yet, all I know is I won't be backing Seville, not because I believe he absolutely can't win, of course he can, but because I don't see any value in his price on what he's achieved.

I can see why you think Seville's form is superior and you might be proved right. I just think that Sea Moon put up a very decent time performance at the weights last time, one that would've given him a serious chance in the Irish Derby. He did have a bit of a tough race though and I fully understand them not pitching him at the race so soon after. I also take your point about Namibian and I agree that his latest 2 performances don't look great. As mad as it probably sounds it was his performance when beaten at Musselburgh that impressed me, it was another good effort on the clock at the weights. I don't usually go near 2 mile races but it was on the strength of that that I backed him at Ascot. Like you say he just scraped home there but it was a slowly run affair. I wimped out last time and had a pathetic place only bet on him, I was kicking myself after. Again he just scraped home but again it was slow run. I reckon he has a good chance on Wednesday but I'd like to see a truly run race.

Maybe, it's just a bit worrying that even though her other wins looked impressive they were achieved off early crawls and today when she was properly tested she failed to deliver. What was that all about with Galikova's pacemaker? Looked like he wanted another snail pace.

I Just dont believe today was the same GL that went 7 straight wins,2 of which were group 1 classics,as i posted on the other thread,Fabre was not exactly giving off positive vibes going into the race saying he wishes he had another week to work with her and she is a little short and this is not the main target,
Have watched it a few times and i have to agree with her jockey that she hated the dead ground and it totally blunted her usual turn of foot,if you watch it again you will see that she was the last horse off the bridle and travelling better than any,Galikova was being pushed along a full furlong before GL's jockey even made a move, but she found nothing when asked today, just ploded on,they are obviously both very good fillies and i'm sure she will prove that run all wrong next time out

Just out of curiosity, do you subscribe to Timeform? I see on the ATR website their pick is Sea Moon. Do they often pick horses that have 11lbs to find? It's a genuine question, as while I certainly don't automatically back my top rated horses I would very rarely back one that fell 11lbs short.
By:

When: 15 Aug 11 23:12
No dont sub to timeform or anything like that, just have a look at there site after backing a horse just to see there view on it and found this quote earlier today

'But Seville has 5lb and more in hand of his rivals in the Voltigeur, and currently boasts an 11lb higher Timeform rating than Sea Moon, who is joint second favourite with Census at 13-2 for the St Leger next month. Seville is the 10-3 favourite for the Classic on the exchange.

Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin said: "Aidan O'Brien clearly has a very strong hand in Wednesday's main races at York, but whether Await The Dawn deserves to be as short as 5-6 is very debatable.

"Seville would appear to hold more convincing form claims judged on his Group 1 runner-up performances in the Irish Derby and Grand Prix De Paris.

"His main Leger and Voltigeur market rival Sea Moon may be "sexier" in that he comes here with less miles on the clock, a big reputation and a rare Timeform big "P", but the fact remains that his York handicap win only came off a mark of 92.

"To put that into context, Hoof It steps up to Group 1 company on Friday after winning off a mark some 19lb higher at Goodwood last time; Sea Moon clearly has a deal on in this company."
By:
jair1970

Totally disagree with that analysis TheFormMan.

Think Golden Lilac got found out today and would happily back Galikova to beat her every time from now on.

Horses with a turn of foot will always look classy in a slow run race but given a true pace, will have to be superlative to pitch a 11s final furlong on the end.  That's not to say she isn;t classy, more that she's won races that have suited her and has come up short off a decent pace today.

Re the Voltigeur

It's far too simplistic to take a look at the entrants and purely react to the seemingly 'obvious' form.

Sure Seville has been competing at a high level, but the horse has developed a severe case of seconditis.  Add this to the fact that he's dropping down in class here but clearly prepping and his trainer's miserable recent record in the race and you've got too many questions to answer at very short odds.

I would have full respect for Sea Moon and Al Kazeem here as horses that haven't shown their hand yet; particularly for Sea Moon, this has most likely been the plan for some while and both can show themselves to be much better than their form currently suggests.

Amongst the rest of the field Namibian is clearly a tough sort and i'd not be ruling out Regent Street to outrun his odds, though pacemaking duties possible.

This race is often more competatiove than first appears on paper and this year is no exception IMO

Really, in no way is Seville a good bet at the prices.
By:
Figgis
When: 15 Aug 11 23:22
Another problem with this Voltigeur is as it looks quite competitive (at least in my view) there is a danger that the winner might have a hard race and leave his Leger chances behind, some connections will probably be mindful of this.
By:
TheFormMan
When: 15 Aug 11 23:38
I would hardly call it a miserable recent record,

2010 2 runners,MIDAS TOUCH 2ND
               JOSHUAS TREE 3RD
2009 no runners
2008 no runners
2007 4 runners,YELLOWSTONE 2ND
               MACARTHUR 3RD
               ACAPULCO 4TH
               MAHLER 5TH
2006 2 runners,PUERTO RICO 3RD
               FIRE AND RAIN 6TH
as you can see,its not a race he targets every year and they have all run ok,the only of the above to go off favorite was Yellowstone, the rest were all fair prices and ran upto there form,i would certainlly suggest that Seville is a better horse than any of the above and very much merits his current price
By:
jair1970

No winners screams miserable to me
Especially when you're looking at short odds on a twicer that's clearly prepping.

I seriously doubt that the essential component they're looking for in Seville's CV is a Group 2...

He could win. He could win easily.  But nothing suggests that he's a good value bet at the odds.

Dream Ahead last week, Goldikova today; both horses that have run in deep races and been allowed to go off very short prices despite numerous possible improvers facing them.
I just feel that the Voltigeur has a similar shape to it; it usually does.

dont wont to put you off Al Kazeem(esp at these prices),but he had a slight setback after Newbury.I e-mailed Mr Charlton as he was down to run last weekend(i fancied him if he ran think it was at Newmarket) and he informed me of this, but did say he would be back for the GV.

Agree - great stuff this.

FWIW I think Seville is by far the most likely winner of the race and I have always been a big fan (he is in my TTTF). However I wouldnt be wanting to back him at the price. I think Namibian is rather under-rated coming from the less fashionable Mark Johnston stable. I agree he has only scraped home the last twice but he is a horse who always seems to find that litle bit more and I think he could give the fav something to think about. I backed Solar Sky at R Ascot and was counting my money a furlong out until this one rallied really well. I think the race will be run to suit and, in SDS, he has arguably the strongest jockey out there at the moment.

Not much of a fan of Sea Moon but have heard he is working the house down on the gallops and has certainly been given a campaign aimed at the second half of the season.

So my bet would probably be a win on Namibian with a reverse forecast cover with the fav.

I am firmly against ATD at the prices and backed TO and Midday last week when it became clear they were both likely runners. ATD did NOT look like a horse who wanted to step down in trip at R Ascot and IMO he is way too short for a horse having his first run in Group 1 company and up against proven Group 1 winners. I would admit that he is still unexposed and could just be a cut above these but happy to take him on. When AOB is REALLY confident he only runs one so the fact that ROC is in there is another reason to be wary I think.

The race will be run at a decent clip to play to ATD's stamina but I think this will favour Midday as well. She is so classy and so consistent and I can't see her being out of the first 2. Twice Over has perhaps seen better days but he did show a return to form last time out and goes well here. 8-1 was too big and he has been such a great benefactor to me over the years I almost HAD to back him!

I love this meeting and can't wait for it to all kick off tomorrow.

Roobuck, im not sure Vita Nova will be an eachway price going purely on the ante-post market on here last week, she was 11/4. But with BB, Laughing Lahses, Banimpire and WOW all set to reoppose one another, plus the addition of Snow Fairy, then she really should be against that lot! Perhaps the market just got ahead of itself when they announced Midday would switch to the international ?

re Seville .. if he improves for the extra distance, then he ought to be winning this. He has had 4 runs this season so they cant be making any fitness excusses afterwards, imo, ditto for Namibian.  Sea Moon is the one prepping, imo.
