Not liking M. Fabre's latest angle. What constitutes 'a big field', I wonder?
By:
Something out this AM HM ?
By:
Fabre seems to be suggesting O'Brien is throwing too many darts for his liking with around 9 of the 22 declared so far.
By:
Maybe if O'Brien shaves this avalanche of arrows down to Recital and Seville the only ones with a realisitc chance, Fabre might be happy.

thanks

"For me (shouldn't he have said 'Pour Moi'? No sense of fun those Frenchies), the number of runners is very important," Fabre said. "If it's a big field I will not bring him over. If I plan to run he will travel on May 25, but I have to talk to the owners."
Sounds like the trainer's still carrying a few Derby scars from yesteryear. Doesn't want his horse being banged about round the Downs and coming home on three legs again. Andre, we all know you're the guv'nor, but just do what you're told for once, eh? There's a good chap. |
By:
Sounds like he doesn't really want to come over but maybe is being leant on a bit.
Be surprised if more than 14(?) turned up, and what's his definition of a big field? The plot thickens... Thanks for putting the quote up Headmaster. |
By:
Yep, exactly that jair. What is a big Derby field? We need to know!
By:
Think he is getting cold feet.cant see pour moi making the race.
By:
I can understand Fabres reluctance as he was probably never being aimed at the race, but surely Magnier / Coolmore will make the final decision

I seem to remember Fabre being a vocal critic of the Derby in the past, his view was that the race put too much of a strain on still immature 3yos. I'd say the main reason he's done poorly in the race is he simply hasn't sent a horse good enough. I've certainly never been tempted to back any of them until Pour Moi. Incredibly the overhyped Visindar started as short as 2/1 fav a few years ago. The obvious exception was Pennekamp, but he was injured in the race, which must also have tainted Fabre's opinion of the Derby. However, I'm sure he'd still love to win it and I'll be surprised if he doesn't run Pour Moi.

Pour Moi is owned by the biggest breeders in the world and is owned by billionaires. Their success is built on producing middle distance getting sires who can win the biggest races and the biggest name to have on the CV is the English Derby. If not that, then the Arc. Montjeu and Gallileo are the hottest sires and their priority must be to get another Derby winner out of either to keep the momemtum going. Seville can run for Gallileo so who runs for Montjeu? Recital or Pour Moi? The French Derby is a poor alternative for them but Fabre is always planning to win the Arc and he will be thinking about the best programme for that. So, I think the PM decision is in the balnce with Recital and how that one is working. |
By:
Sandown
Given their usual approach to the race, don't you see them giving themselves 2 options of getting a Montjeu winner? I can only see them remaining hopeful rather than confident about Recital's prospects, even if he does continue to please at home. |

Fabre is all-powerful and is allowed to do what he wants by any owner including Shk M & I guess Coolmore. Otherwise, he sacks the owner (Wildenstein). If he says he wants to train PM to win the Arc & the French D or Grand Prix de Paris more likely is a better stepping stone then I think Coolmore will not lean on him. But, If Recital disappoints in his work, it will be a close call who wins out. |
By:
Of course they could run 2 Montjeus- don't think that will be a factor in the decision but they will want at least one to run.
By:
I like Fabre - typical French arrogance and also not a little intelligent i would say.
Although he would perhaps not be keen to make it a big public thing, I suspect Fabre not having won a Derby is a bit of an irritation to him. I am hopeful he comes for the Derby with this horse; not least because i plunged at 20/1. I still wonder if this Derby is very open. You can certainly question the value of the Dante form and the OB pair don't look that special. Maybe this is Fabre's best ever chance. |
By:
Yes, fair enough. I still think Fabre himself will be too tempted to go for the Derby with this colt. Could be wrong though, I prefer to predict animals than people [;)]
By:
Yes the ante post game though is a good one if you can second guess the trainers. When a horse is a doubtful runner you get big odds. When they are confirmed as definite the odds shrink. Getting on first is a splendid way to trade.
Of course predicting Fabre is a rather tricky matter. I hope he comes but have zero confidence. I am sure he will do best for the horse whatever the rewards for his own ego. |
By:
Coolmore will determine whether Pour Moi comes to Epsom - and that depends on how good they think the Ballydoyle colts are. The English Classics are much more prestigious than the French and if Fabre has a horse good enough (Zafonic, Pennekamp) it will come to England. Unless it is owned by someone like Wildenstein who doesn't really care for English racing.

By:
are you an arber then Cry ? It seems your trading Await The Dawn also ..
Be careful, Eric Morrise will have your nuts on a plate for arbing. |
By:
Price is still solid for PM here .. if Fabre goes to the effort of bringing him over for the Breakfast with the Stars, and provided he takes to his gallop around the track, then he'll run whether there is 10 or 20 runners.imo

By:
Is Fabre all-powerful?
I appreciate that it comes down to who pays the bills but would he happily let Godolphin take Cutlass Bay, Cavalryman, Rewilding and Simon de Montfort from him, if he was indeed 'in charge'. |
By:
Doesn't Fabre only have 2 Coolmore horses or so at the moment.
Wouldn't be a big deal for either party if there was a falling out and they parted ways. Also I can't see Coolmore taking orders from anyone as to where they will run their horses. |
By:
I tend not to be rich enough or have the patience or organisation to be an "arber". I do though back in the hope that its a high price and sell low, using my own view to decide how much to lay and how much to keep when the price (hopefully) drops.
The idea of seeing my "nuts on a plate" is not an image that would be much kop on daytime telly. Whio the awful pervert is called Eric Morriss who would like to see such an image I dread to think. |

By:
bit and pieces wanting to back him this morning, the 100 quid wanting to get on on the place intrigues me, could well be a intended runnercon
By:
this horse was 12 on here this morning now shortening everywhere decision may have been made
By:
Looks like he's on the plane for the 25th.
By:
Judging by the insider or journalist money on here you are right.
By:
Coolmore also now have Roderic O'Connor for the French Derby so everything points to Pour Moi coming to Epsom - will be interesting to see if he or Recital goes off the Coolmore No.1 on the day as they normally hammer into one specific beast.

Judging by the insider or journalist money on here you are right I suspect you were right too, eric. The story that explains the mini-plunge on Saturday morning appears to have taken two days to be made public, unless I'm taking the wrong trade paper. |

Pour Moi has arrived en Angleterre and is eyeing up his kingdom as we speak.
All good atm. |
By:
Headmaster, where did you get that information from, please.

By:
An Epsom mole, eg.

Headmaster...merci beaucoup

I have just topped up at 7/1 now that Pour Moi has been declared an intended runner by Fabre. He proved this morning that he handles the track (in an exercise gallop at Epsom) and is clearly in great form. Despite the anticipated deluge of money for Carlton House on the day of the race I expect Pour Moi to start significantly shorter than 7/1.
By:
Given that Fabre has now declared his horse a runner, it would be nice of Coolmore swiflty followed suit and announced who from their battalion will be taking part.
Since PM has been declared the prices on both Recital and Seville have drifted with little money to back, but the fact is at least one of them will be running. |

Breakfast With The Stars
Fabre: Already widely reported - said all the right things and it appears to be all systems go for the Derby. The colt definitely has a little Montjeu streak in him. Was swishing his tail a touch in the paddock, although it was quite windy. Got a little warm on the way down too but did his thing well. They went a tad faster than anything else that worked and he was just nudged out to go well clear of lead. Impressed everyone there, it seems. Stoute: Not too much to say about Carlton. Sounds like it's been a smooth prep with no real story to tell. When quizzed about this recent 'electric' workout he used the word 'satisfactory'. When asked about Havant said something like "the plan is to run at this stage" but, to this ear, didn't sound too bullish about her. No expert in Stoute-speak, though. Dunlop: Very happy with Native Khan this morning. Didn't use the event for Snow Fairy or Ouija Board but felt it would do this lad some good. Expecting a big run on Saturday week, and said Fallon had given him as firm commitment as Fallon ever gives that he would be steering. O'Brien: Name-checked Rod O'C, Seville, Recital, MT and Treasure Beach in that order, although couldn't remember Treasure Beach's name, which might be slightly off-putting for TB fans. No clues beyond that - expects decisions to become clearer early next week, and that Carlton House would be hard to beat. Balding asked if the boy would keep the ride on Rod...no clear answer. Murtagh's name mentioned by CB for any possible spare ride and wasn't ruled out . St Nic on course for Coronation, CB only a possible for the race. Crisford: Was quite clear that Ocean War (Frankie) would be their only rep. Casamento off to France and Genius Beast waits for Ascot. All would be left in at confirmation stage, though. Sheikh Mo would be 'thrilled' if Carlton won the Derby, apparently. Can't quite remember but think it sounded like Khawlah may struggle to make the Oaks. All good with BB. John Warren: Spoke brilliantly - really good interview about Carlton House and The Queen. Stoute was aiming CH at Sandown but pulled the plan 5 days before saying, 'I want to do a proper job on him we're going straight to the Dante'. At one point was recalling a recent 7f gallop after which Ryan Moore said the horse had so much speed. Wasn't discussed but stamina probably the only chink in his armour - get the impression they all know this is a proper G1 horse. Channon: Zain Al Boldan doing fine. May run Fork Handles as well. Everything else very doubtful. Would love to see Her Maj have it off on the Downs. Couldn't quite hear Harrington and missed Gosden. |
