Killyglen is of real interest to me.
Former aintree grade 2 winner, likes to race handy, Irish trained and given very easy time over hurdles. He is ground dependant but imo he is no 66/1 chance. Hopefully he will get a nice weight today, seems to have slipped under the radar for most. |

Last year's winner Don't Push It and Neptune Collonge both share top weight of 11st 10lb for the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree on 9 April.
Don't Push It ended Tony McCoy's long wait for an Aintree winner in 2010 when triumphing under 11st 5lb. Paul Nicholls' Neptune Collonges, winner of the Argento Chase last time out, is among 10 entries for the trainer. They include former Irish National winner Niche Market on 10st 13lb while What A Friend, who is part-owned by Alex Ferguson, is off 11st 6lb. Donald McCain's Ballabriggs is as low as 14-1 favourite with some bookmakers and he has been handed 11st for the feature event. Willie Mullins' The Midnight Club (10st 13lb) is also prominent in the ante-post lists along with Big Fella Thanks (11st 1lb) and West End Rocker (10st 5lb). Mullins has nine possibles in total with Dooneys Gate (11st 4lb) and Scotsirish (11st 2lb) the highest rated of his team. Dermot Weld's Majestic Concorde is an eyecatching entry on 11st 5lb. Merigo won last year's Scottish National and he has been given 10st 1lb in the initial list while the 2010 Irish National winner Bluesea Cracker, trained by James Motherway, has 10st 4lb. Becauseicouldntsee is another to note on 10st 8lb while Evan Williams has two contenders in Deep Purple (11st 7lb) and State Of Play (10st 6lb) who has finished fourth and third in the last two renewals. Plenty of last year's runners could be back for another crack with fifth Hello Bud (10st 5lb), sixth Snowy Morning (10st 9lb) and seventh Character Building (10st 4lb) among the 101 remaining entries. David Pipe sent out Comply Or Die to win in 2008 and that horse has 10st 8lb this time while stablemate Or Noir De Somoza has the heavier impost of 11st 5lb. As well as Tidal Bay, trainer Howard Johnson has Grand Sefton winner Frankie Figg (10st 3lb) with Dermot Weld's Majestic Concorde an eyecatching entry on 11st 5lb. The four-and-a-half-mile marathon has a safety limit of 40 runners and O'Neill's Quolibet, a French recruit who has yet to run in this country, is currently 40th on the list. |

Nicholls must be pretty pleased with 11-6 for two-time Grade 1 winner What a Friend.

Howard Johnson (Tidal Bay 11st 9lb, Santa's Son 10st 5lb, Royal Rosa, Frankie Figg 10st 3lb, Belon Gale 10st 1lb): "The main aim for Tidal Bay is the Gold Cup so we'll see.
"I have schooled him over National fences before and he jumps them like a buck. There's nearly a month between them and he's 10 now but we'll see. He wants a marathon trip these days, which is strange for an Arkle winner. "If he ran, we'd know our fate early. He'll either take to it or tail himself off. "Santa's Son should get in and at this stage he'd be my main hope. He's won a Castleford Chase so he's got a bit of class and he came out of his win at Musselburgh in very good shape. He'll stay. "The others might struggle to get in but we know Frankie Figg loves it there.'' Dessie Hughes (Vic Venturi 11st 6lb, In Compliance 10st 5lb): "He's got the same weight as last year. We'll have to put up with it, but I'd have liked to see him with a couple of pounds lower. He'll run in the Bobbyjo next Wednesday. "In Compliance is warming up nicely for it. There's a conditions race coming up for him at Thurles in the next 10 days and he'll probably go there.'' Donald McCain (Ballabriggs 11st, Sagalyrique 9st 13lb Khachaturian 9st 10lb): "I've no complaints with that for Ballabriggs. He's a Cheltenham Festival winner so it was always going to be around the 11st mark. "The bonus is that Don't Push It is likely to run so the weights aren't going to change at all. I've no complaints. "The other two aren't likely to get in and we're going to the Racing Post Chase with Sagalryique and that will decide where we go after that.'' Gordon Elliott (Backstage 10st 12lb, Nedzer's Return 10st 8lb, Dev 10st): "That will do. Backstage won his point-to-point at the weekend. He might have one run under Rules before the National. "Nedzer's Return qualifies for the Fox Hunter's as well so I'll have to discuss that with the owners. Dev won't get in." Jimmy Moffatt (Chief Dan George 10st 12lb): ''That's a good racing weight. I'd be happy with that, he's off his correct mark. Don't Push It will run so we'll stay under 11st. We don't want to go through that barrier as not too many win above 11st. "He'll have a spin over hurdles at Haydock on Saturday, then he'll go to Cheltenham for the handicap chase he won last year then he'll go to Aintree.'' Henrietta Knight (Calgary Bay 10st 10lb): "I suppose that's not too bad a weight and he'll go straight for the National.'' Martin Lynch (Oscar Time 10st 9lb): "It looks like he's rated me a few pounds above my Irish mark which I'm not too happy about given that I haven't run the horse over fences since I've had him. "But, at the end of the day, if he ran he's got less than 11st which is a nice racing weight. After that, you just need all the luck in the world!'' Noel Glynn (Becauseicouldntsee 10st 8lb): "I'd be happy with that, hopefully we get him there now as we had a setback the other week. "He's only a week away from going back into work so he's going the right way. We wouldn't have time for a run so it will be straight there. "I was expecting more so that's a pleasant surprise. He's only eight so hopefully he'll be going back for a few years yet. "I led in Numbersixvalverde for my cousin (Martin Brassil) and we were drunk for a week after that!'' Malcolm Jefferson (King Fontaine 10st 6lb): "That seems all right. Don't Push It will probably run so it won't be going up either. "We want to see how he goes on Saturday (at Haydock) first, that will tell us something. If he isn't in he can't run. He's eight which isn't a bad age for the National. "Everything has to go right between now and then but it would be a handy weight if he ran.'' Alan King (West End Rocker 10st 5lb): "I'm very happy with that. It's a good racing weight so let's just hope things go according to plan on Saturday (at Haydock). Once we get this weekend out of the way we'll start worry about the National after that. "You'd hope he'd get in but I'm not worrying about that just yet.'' James Motherway (Bluesea Cracker 10st 4lb): ''It's a nice racing weight, we can't complain about that. "She's due to run in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse next week. My owners and myself will probably make a decision after that as to whether she'll go to Aintree or not. "My main concern is the ground. She does need some cut, that is my one fear. If it came up too fast she wouldn't take her chance. Most of her best runs have been on soft so we might have to put a back-up plan in place.'' Andrew Parker (Merigo 10st 1lb): "He's got the same rating (137) as last year. He's not altered us so it's going to be a struggle to get in. There are masses of horses above us in the weights so we will just have to see if we are lucky. "He's in great form, I've sat on him this morning. If he doesn't get in, we'll go to Ayr instead for the Scottish National. We'll just have to let fate take his course and see what happens. "He may go to Ayr next week for a novice hurdle just to get that sharpener into him.'' |

All these little pen stories are very nice,
but can someone give a FULL list of the weights, then we can judge for ourselves wether our horse/s have a chance of getting in? |

Thanks to both Chewy11 and Bad Beat Histaks.
My highest weighted horse has a good chance of getting in and my second horse a slight but hopeful chance. As regards chances of getting in most recent good form gives a better chance than a horse showing a lack of form, in other words if a few horses are rated the same, but a horse runs after the weights published and wins, that horse would be treated better than losers. |

Neptune Collonges in great form and he's of an 8lb lower mark. Fantastic jumper, galloper, will stay, perfect age - but will he run?
|
|
By:
At first glance I rather like BecauseIcouldn'tsee @ 33/1 - though with the trainer reporting he had a little problem I won't play until much nearer the time, and preferably when I know who's jocked up.

backstage carries 5lb more than his official rating, only horse I can see who is, think we have been unfairly treated by the hcapper. oscar time carries one pound less than offical mark aswell!
|
|
By:
First race I usually look at his the irish grand national, and Oscar time is the most interesting horse from that race, especially with his winning form on yielding ground at leopardstown.
|
|
By:
i agree with you vinnie just bet him at 25 owned by waley cohen been given light season one run over fences now to put him spot on strong traveller my idea of the winner for super sam
|
|
By:
Oscar Time well in compared to Irish handicap mark, gamble already commenced by the looks of it.
Backstage not particularly well treated by the UK handicapper but still capable of winning this off 10st 12lbs |
|
By:
I think you should all have a look at Killyglen.Likes flat tracks and good ground and his form against Wogan shows him to be a better horse than Ballabriggs. Also won on the Mildmay course 2 yrs ago.

From a handicap point of view, someone has pointed out that,
Neptune Collonges is 8lbs lower than his official rating, but there is one horse that is 13lbs in off Smiths original rating, he gives as his reason that the horse is not as good now as he was, how does he know? The horse last ran in France on NOV 28th and finished 4th in a grade 2, just 8 1/2 lengths in front of him was MID DANCER who has been a top jumper in France and the winner looks like the next leading jumper for a few years in France, so OR NOIR DE SOMOZA, must be thrown in at the weights. |
|

You just gotta love AP MCCoy and his 2 minds. I think he mimes while Frank Berry talks
![]() Don't Push It tried and tested up 5lbs and AP isn't sure? [:o] Let me refresh your memory AP a few weeks ago you said...."If they want to run Synchronized they can go without me" Didn't he also say he wouldn't get of Don't Push It for anything? He was never ever ever going to ride Can't Buy Time last season and there's even less chance he will do so this time round. Horse wouldn't get the trip for starters. Listen not to the man's ramblings he will ride Don't Push It and with only 5lbs more to carry he must be on the short list of likely winners. |
|
By:
Have to agree with you there Rondetto
Horse won a 500k chase last year carrying 11st 5lb by 5 lengths and 20 lengths (handicap mark of 153) and finds himself returning the following year carrying 5lb more with a handicap mark of 160. Before the GN weights were announced his official handicap mark was 164 so that looks pretty favourable treatment to me all because the handicapper wants to compress the weights from top to bottom thereby attracting the better horses to the race. As someone who has been backing Backstage and three or four others antepost throughout the winter, and who wasn't giving DPI a second glance thinking the weight differential would be far more severe, I am feeling a bit aggrieved at the way they have manipulated the situation here. |

As I wrote from a handicapping point of view, that is just what it was, but several years ago there was a theory that 2 and a half milers could win the national, I think it was due to F Rimells horse GAY VULGAN, winning and he had never won beyond 2 1/2 miles, but the sire was VULGAN and he was a sire to inject stamina into his offspring, the fact that because of the extreme distance, the race is run a bit slower than most 3 mile chases may help horses to get the distance, so long as they can jump.
OR has won 16 of his 32 races 2nd 6 and third 2, winning over £i million in prize money and in most cases raced against top class. |

I'm a big fan of the french horses and am always interested to see when they are handicapped in their early runs in GB. I have backed many of F Doumen's runners in the GN - a number have ran well for a long way.I was not questioning the class; record or handicapping aspect of OR. In looking at it's form (as you say win and place to run ration v impressive) it is noticeable that every run over 22f (2m 6f) it has been either been well beaten or has uncharcteristically fallen. Clearly you may be right on he breeding front re stamina influence...unless I have a clear explanation for its failure over longer to date there must be a question mark... |

any predictions as to who will be withdrawn march 22nd
"those that ran in gold cup???? |

Only prediction Tidal Bay if he goes for GN is way over priced, and will be single figures.Gold Cup trip too short for him and he was only just getting going at finish.3 wins from 7 runs at Aintree and if like i think he will take to these fences will do for me.

I was soft enough to back Tidal Bay in the Gold Cup (at 50-1 mind you). I think he would **** his pants over Aintree fences - Mildmay form counts for nothing imo - and throw the towel in sharpish. Not for me.

Like Northern Alliance, but given connections, why such a big price?
