Runs today in the 3.40 at Southwell and if it wins nicely the 16/1 will all be gone.

It was impressive on debut and they have been furstrated by the weather entries wise since. Should win today but more importamtly they think its another Monsignor.

Do with this as you will.

I am only really sharing the views of the trainer - never seen a man so convinced.

As for times - the only time I pay any attention to at the racecourse is what time the bar shuts.

Different Strokes and all that Cool

the form looks solid though .... the 2nd Sire de Grugy came 2nd again in its next race beaten by the Henderson horse Bobs Worth which has since won a decent race at Cheltenham . Sire de Grugy then won at Fakenham by 19l ..race wasnt up to much but won as easy as you like.

The way Knight Pass went away from the field was very impressive and it will be interesting to see how it does with a penalty on its back. I have a little on for the Champion bumper but wont go more until I see how it copes today and what the Irish challengers are like.

Think the Egerton horse is being a little underestimated tbh going on the betting.

Greatrex was on GetOn earlier and seems confident, though.

Watching brief for me, 16/1 is top price currently for Cheltenham, fyi.

I have a piece of 16/1.

By a twist of fate i know the owners of Egy's horse very well. I contacted them this morning to let them know what Greatrix had told me about his horse in case they were thinking of a big bet today (Mccoy up is usually a good sign for one of Egy's).

What do you know - they think theirs is top class and they really fancy it.

too much information [:(]

Tucho - I have £30 for the Festival at 16's and a little more at 4/5 for today both on Knight Pass.

Hardly earth shattering stuff.

I think Knight Pass is 1 2's on shot personally today.
Report Panto Prince January 5, 2011 2:49 PM GMT
sorry a 2's on shot.
Report Can't Catch Me January 5, 2011 2:50 PM GMT
Also have a few bob on this beast at 16/1/. Will be watching keenly. The only thing that puts me off is Greatrex tbh. He's had the next Monsignor a few times now and they've all turned out to be duds.
Report Tucho January 5, 2011 3:23 PM GMT
i was just being facetious, good luck with your champion bumper bets

i just meant if you have spoken to both connections and they are both strongly fancied today, why not back the 4-1 shot instead of the 4-6, if avoca promise gets beat at least you'll have the cheltenham bet on knight pass to look forward to

unless in the extremely unlikely event they are both beaten out of sight
Report sintonian January 5, 2011 3:28 PM GMT
Got the impression Noel Chance fancied his earlier. Johnson booked and has been nibbled, just fyi. Could be a good bumper today.

gl all. cheering Knights Pass.

Report Can't Catch Me January 5, 2011 3:46 PM GMT
Impressive performance imo.
Report Panto Prince January 5, 2011 3:49 PM GMT
Well the 4/5 was ok but I'd like to see it line up at Cheltenham where the 16's could look pretty big. Sounded impressive - will take a good look tonight.
Report sintonian January 5, 2011 3:49 PM GMT
Did it well.

Noel Chances horse was runner-up too and I think he quite liked it igven Jockey booking and the fact it was nibble at this morning. Should be a few winners from the race.

well done ccm, Panto.

moments like these when wish I had had the courage of my convictions and piled on for Chelts - never mind ...a small bet is better than no bet. The way that horse eased to the front, went clear and then eased down carrying 11st7lbs was highly impressive. The Sandown bumper he won always features good horses... Bensalem a couple of years ago and then Megastar,Wayward Prince,Master of The Hall, Stoneys Treasure last year. Presume will put it away until the festival now.
Report ben10 January 5, 2011 3:57 PM GMT
Impressed with that, looks a good long range call for this race with obvious contenders not really forthcoming.
Report CVByrne January 5, 2011 4:07 PM GMT
Sorry but the bumper is never a race for big ap betting. So don't worry about your stakes minger.
Report Can't Catch Me January 5, 2011 4:09 PM GMT
Looks fairly versatile with regards to ground too. Looked pretty soft there today.
Report Can't Catch Me January 5, 2011 4:12 PM GMT
Generally 10's now. SJ as low as 7/1.

Bit of a rick at WH imo.. remains unchanged at 14/1 if anyone is still interested. Cant believe they wouldnt have cut him? Just topped up at that price....
Report Can't Catch Me January 5, 2011 4:13 PM GMT
iyo of course CVB.

It surely follows that the more you had on at 16/1 the better it would be now?
Report toffeeboy January 5, 2011 4:15 PM GMT
14's for the next 5 mins I would guess at Hills for those who want it.
Report CVByrne January 5, 2011 4:17 PM GMT
Yes, in hindsight it would be. But he is right keeping his ap stakes small enough with the bumper. He did the right thing on the whole not going big. Bumper is a  very  tricky race to discern.
Report Can't Catch Me January 5, 2011 4:20 PM GMT
Not so sure its trickier than alot of others myself. I know a few fella's who are very glad they had the courage of their convictions with Dunguib!
Report CVByrne January 5, 2011 4:24 PM GMT
True, but it's still a hard race in general to work out this far in advance. So little form.
Report Can't Catch Me January 5, 2011 4:29 PM GMT
Yeah especially with the Irish runners. Havent seen too many contenders yet have we. Mind you, I think we're behind with all the novice races this year in terms of form in the book.

Definitely the least amount of AP bets I have had for some time. Might be no bad thing!
Report Panto Prince January 5, 2011 4:29 PM GMT
I can tell you now if it lines up there will be money for it as there was for Dunguib. When I was told that connections couldn't have Dunguib  beaten it was 8/1 with the books. That was in late Dec. it was still 8/1 the morning of the race. The plunge only started half an hour before the race it was manic I have never been in a betting ring with so much money flying about for one horse. The connections of Knight Pass are not shy of a punt but I think it will be a late one.

I didnt play ante post that year for the exact reason that CVB outlined but got on at 5/1. On that basis I am ok with a small chunk of 16's which is the right balance between getting a good price and not getting carried away in what is usually a very hot and quite rough race with loads of fancied horses.

You will recall that connections of Rite of Passage (no mugs) were absolutely gobsmacked that they didn't win that year they thought they had something special (turns out they did).
Report Minger January 5, 2011 5:12 PM GMT
its ok and thank you for your concern....I have managed to pull myself together now as the price has settled down. Billys currently 12s and around the same on here.So no huge damage done ....my knee jerk squeal was that of the gutted punter who has picked out a very nice prospect and is now going down the "if only " route as opposed to the far more rational "I really should not do my conkers on a horse that has only run once and might possibly win the festival bumper and become the second English horse in a row to beat all those decent Irish horses at an ante post price of 16/1 for a  20+ runner race that is 3 months away"
All that said I will have some more on at some stage...hopefully once the price has drifted following the facile sucess of a Mullins wonder horse. As much as I like Roger Charlton I can not have Keys as the winner.

That and also Quartano I think they rated.

As far as WG is concerned none of them compare to this beast - and judged on what happened today I am not surprised.

Putting aside 16/1 voucher it looks pretty useful Grin

impressive but that was a really poor bumper 16s ok but 7/1 fav ridiculous
many more horses to come out yet
Report Panto Prince January 5, 2011 9:45 PM GMT
Just watched the race twice.

May not have been a great race but KP quickened very well and given that it was pulling hard early on and was exposed to the front quite early I am impressed.

I cant see how that won't go close at Chelts - faster pace, more cover, better ground etc.

Knight Pass was cut to 7-1 for the Champion Bumper by Stan James after a facile victory in the southwell-racecourse.co.uk Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race at Southwell on Wednesday.

Warren Greatrex's Accordion gelding was sent off the 1-2 favourite under Wayne Hutchinson and he easily accounted for his rivals without coming off the bridle.

Gores Island (16-1) was second with Victor Leudorum (28-1) back in third.

"He's got everything," said Greatrex. "I don't want to fall into the trap of talking him up, but I love the horse and he's got a serious future.

"Wayne said it was like a piece of work.

"I would have thought he'll go straight to Cheltenham now. He'll handle the track and the prelims, he's very professional."
Report Panto Prince January 6, 2011 7:06 AM GMT
FaTotesport - if you look back you'll see NH racing has a rich and varied history which even goes back beyond the 2010 Supreme Novices Hurdle.
Report woodworm January 6, 2011 8:27 AM GMT
This was a Southwell bumper!
Price is simply ridiculous imo.
Better races and better horses to come; price as much to do with owner than anything else.
Report Panto Prince January 6, 2011 9:00 AM GMT
Woodworm - feel free to put something up at a value long range price (like the 16/1 that we got) rather than crabbing other people's selections. Would you turn down 16/1 now?

You may be right about better horses still to emerge but there is nothing I have seen in Britain or Ireland that would worry me so far.Keys especially. On that basis its a no bet race for you at the moment - which is fine.
Report Minger January 6, 2011 9:44 AM GMT
First was a Sandown bumper....second was a Southwell bumper with a penalty....I suspect the form of both will turn out to be decent....Cue Card's was a Class 6 Fontwell bumper....hardly what the statisticans would flag up as the precursor to festival bumper success. To write this off because it took place at Southwell is ridiculous.
Report bigmart January 6, 2011 10:15 AM GMT
panto you were correct regarding the horses ability, I have good reason to believe ericht is as good ,the horse lost 15 lengths at the start off its previous race, and was just touched off by a length ,another 4,1/2
back to Avoco promise Avoca promisir was beaten 10 len by your fellow
all things being equel i dont think their is a lot between them if enricht had not lost a huge amount off ground at the start, and between you and me AVOCA PROMISE was given a shocking ride by McCOY Yesterday
he had it way out the back then was all over the track ,a pathetic ride in my opinion, would never have beaten your horse but should have finished a lot closer, given the fact that he must have covered more ground than any other horse in the race ,and making up ground is very hard under the conditions i.e [half way through the race and he is still sitting way at the back] you have picked a nice horse to follow bud and it sure quickened up well given the penalty and ground conditions ,good luck with your bet panto , All the best mart .
Report woodworm January 6, 2011 1:13 PM GMT
Sorry, didnt mean to come across as an ****.
In the context of the original post, horse picked out prior to the race at a good price now appears value. My point was that the horse was expected to win (1-2) and did like a 1-2 shot should have. The reaction by bookmakers to have him installed as low as 7-1 still seems ridiculous. Yes Cue Card won at Fontwell but he is the exception to the rule.

I dont have a horse to put up against him. I have not had a bet and wont do so probably until the day. I would be interested to see what runs in Ireland over the next few weeks before getting involved.

Good luck with your punt.
Report woodworm January 6, 2011 1:14 PM GMT
FWIW I wasnt very impressed by Keys either!
Report Can't Catch Me January 6, 2011 2:08 PM GMT
I agree 7/1 is daft. But 16/1 is still value. He's probably a 10-12/1 shot imo.
