Impressive but 16/1 isn't exactly great value for a maiden victory, wasn't exactly hammered today and Godolphin's ready first time out. Prefer Native Khan perhaps?
Report sintonian • August 13, 2010 1:46 PM BST
Only a few quid for me Ben. Turn of foot was devastating but yep it's just a maiden so tentative.

Dettori was just interviewed briefly and says the horse has a big reputation but he's not ridden it before.

Favourable comparison with the second division I see. Doubts are the stable's recent record with horses from 2 to 3 and the fact that it's too short, that's all I can really come up with. Was a good turn of foot.

For sure he did it well there gents but surely 16/1 is a bit tight (I understand you can get bigger in places). But a maiden win is a maiden win and considering you can get a group 2 winner - Strong Suit at 12/1 and a group one winner - Zoffany at 10/1.... I wouldn't be in any rush to steam in at 16s.

I doubt the supplementary fee would be significant to the Maktoums, so would suggest is he's considered good enough then he will be entered nearer the time.

Very interested to see how he fares in the Champagne Stakes tomorrow. Obviously the form of that Newbury maiden win hasn't quite been working out, with Buckland and Musawama beaten in the past couple of days, but he was visually very impressive, showing a sharp and sustained turn of foot throughout the final furlong and still had running left in him at the line. Looks a very exciting prospect, though at a shade of odds on I may well sit back and watch rather than get involved.
Report mythical prince • September 10, 2010 9:46 PM BST
he'll hose up tommorow. interesting to see what comes out of the national stakes as well. i like pathfork but janood is quite interesting at the prices.
Report Cream Of The Crop • September 10, 2010 9:59 PM BST
he'll hose up tommorow

Hopefully he will. It is always nice to see an impressive debut winner confirm that promise at a higher level, such as Frankel today.

As for the National Stakes, much will depend on how the ground is riding. Janood seemed to relish the rain softened conditions when winning the Washington Singer, though the form of that race was devalued by Zaidan not coping with conditions. I cannot see past Pathfork if the ground is fine for him. Ireland's most exciting 2yo IMO.

Report Shark12 • September 11, 2010 11:25 AM BST
Whilst I think he may win, and you couldnt fail to be impressed with his maiden victory, I thought Saamidd would be a 7/2 with Memory being the odds on favourite - not the other way round. To this extent I think that the value is Memory and Saamidd is over priced.

However I hope he dots up, ala White Moonstone.

you've lost me a bit with that post do you mean Waiters Dream or Approve?
Report mythical prince • September 11, 2010 12:55 PM BST
clearly the old memory's gone! [;)]

they must think a lot of this horse to make him so short against waiters dream and approve, two horses who already show a high level of form. of course if i'm being totally objective, i agree that he represents no value. However i'm not totally convinced that the gimcrack was a great renewal, or the acomb for that matter (the withdrawal of dream ahead left the meehan horse with little to beat)

waiters dream strikes me as a bit of a grinder, so i'm not convinced that doncaster will really suit his racing style, however saamid on looks seems very much like white moonstone, tall leggy and athletic, with a turn of foot, normally such a horse should be ideal for doncaster.

The only worry for me, is that they may go no pace in such a small field, and saamid might pull for his head.
Report Shark12 • September 11, 2010 2:06 PM BST
DOH! Yes I meant Approve, what an idiot!!

I thought the market would have Approve as favourite and Saamidd around the say 7/2 mark.

I would like Saamidd to hose up (as ive done a Godolphin accumulator at Doncaster today) but my head says he's the wrong price.

Report eric_morris • September 11, 2010 2:37 PM BST
Saamidd gave Godolphin a dream start to Ladbrokes St Leger day when winning the Neptune Investment Management Champagne Stakes at Doncaster.

The 5-6 favourite breezed clear of Waiter's Dream, who had grudgingly attempted to make the running, passing the two-furlong marker and slalomed earnestly away under Frankie Dettori.

Without even hitting top gear, the unbeaten Saamidd still had two and a quarter lengths in reserve of Approve at the line.

Dettori said: "From the first day I set my eyes on him I knew he was such a beautiful individual.

"You can see how calm he is and he also has a good physique.

"He's done it really well."

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: "He has always shown us plenty at home, and at Newbury on his debut he was really good.

"He would have been much better suited by a stronger pace here, but he has won it really well - he put the race to bed at the two-furlong pole.

"The plan is to go for the Dewhurst now. He has got loads of ability."
Report mythical prince • September 11, 2010 2:56 PM BST
ran the last two furlongs slower than frankel did yesterday although the frankel race was run at a crawl. seriously hope that frankel is aimed at the dewhurst as that would be a race to savour.
Report eric_morris • September 11, 2010 3:06 PM BST
If you dont mind Frankel being thrown in against these speedsters and compromising his Derby chances it would be a good move. They need top be sure if they are going for the Guineas if they try the Dewhurst with Frankel as the Racing Post Trophy is perfect for him as a Derby prep a la Motivator while the others are scrapping it out in the Dewhurst/Guineas.
Report sintonian • September 11, 2010 4:10 PM BST
I agree Eric.

For all the promise Frankel has shown .. he just does not look a Guineas horse at all imo, and his speed has been shown with plenty of give in the Ground.  Saamidd today showed again his turn of foot and it would have been even more marked on Good or Good to Firm.

If they meet in the Dewhurst on Good Soft then Frankel would have a big chance, but if it is Good or GF this Saamidd will leave them for dead imvho.
Report sj • September 11, 2010 6:32 PM BST
lets hope he winters at HQ.
Report cryoftruth • September 11, 2010 10:34 PM BST
Saamid was very impressive and has very good form now indeed.

A couple of things though. People should try to stop making the mistake of stating that Frankel's win was with "plenty of give". His first win was on soft. The Doncaster romp and easily his best run of the two so far was on ground that was slightly on the fast side of good. he may need good going rather than slow to be at his very best.

regards Saamidd, he has a very good chance of staying 12 furlongs next year and woiuld be a very decent Derby prospect. His sire is young and there is not really enough information to be sure, but Street Cry has the look of a sire like cape cross or other milers, with the ability to get stayers if there is plenty of stamina on the female side.

The dam's side of Saamidd's pedigree is just all stamina - with his grandad being Galileo and his great grandad being Rainbow Quest. he looks sure to get 10 furlongs and will probably get 12. He looks like the best bet for both Guineas and Derby at this stage; except for Godolphin's established habit of taking top class horses away to Dubai and making them disappear forever that is.
Report bornisthekingofSB • September 12, 2010 8:26 AM BST
taking him to dubai (imo) is a big negative in regards the gns.
Report cryoftruth • September 12, 2010 9:17 AM BST
I am old enough to remember when Godolphin first started. They took Ballancine away from Peter Ch H, and she came back and won the Oaks and Irish Derby. Then they had at least one 2000 Guineas winner.
The godolphin spring trials in Dubai had a major influence on the Guineas markets each year. There were British trainers who started over wintering their horses in warm countries as it seemed to be a definite advantage to do so.

How times have changed!
Report PFtrader • September 12, 2010 9:39 AM BST
Agreed

Based on the Godolphin modus operandi over the last few years I wouldn't be in a hurry to back Saamidd for the Guineas next year despite him looking decidedly useful.

Report cryoftruth • September 12, 2010 9:44 AM BST
yes but I am not sure I would want to be a layer either - he looks very good indeed to me, a realy decent turn of foot. The opposition was pretty decent. Meehan's horse had just hosed up by 4 lengths in the Acomb and was made to look like a plater.

The other matter is that the form of the Irish horses all looks a bit dodgy to me. When Strong Suit, Zaffony etc all ran so close together i did wonder whether they could all be special.

The two of major interest are Frankel and Saamidd. It looks like they will miss eachother this year and then maybe head for the showdown at HQ in May.
Report bornisthekingofSB • September 12, 2010 10:04 AM BST

He will not be ready to win anything next season until August! Godolphin don't win anything early season these days! Wouldn't back him at 50's for either the 2000 Guineas or the Derby, it'd be madness! Talented by the looks of things but he just won't be ready in time!!
Report mythical prince • September 12, 2010 12:55 PM BST
i can't really have him as a derby horse cry tbh. the pedigree might say otherwise but he shows so much speed he looks like an out and out miler. still i'd be glad to be proven otherwise.

imo, he won in a canter at donny; a totally different class to the opponents who are gr2 , gr3 winners .  however there was a lowly rated horse quite close. nonetheless they didnt go fast but he was soon in a different parish.  IF he got 12f (i very much doubt it) then the others better start now.  2000 guineas very possible. Approved looks like a consistent sort, so must have a proper chance at newmarket.
Report cryoftruth • September 17, 2010 9:10 PM BST
gart

He is bred to stay 12 furlongs. The stamina on th dam's side makes him at least as stoutly bred as Sea The Stars.

Of course he might not stay, but he probably will do as do most horses so bred.

Of course if he does he seems to have so much speed that he would be quite tricky to beat if he did.
Report cryoftruth • September 17, 2010 9:14 PM BST
He won in a canter at Donny ----

Yes he did, However I saw the third at Donny shagallover a decent field at York, and Saamidd's form is rock solid despite the ease of victory at Doncatster.

The inescapable conclusion for anyone with a whiff of understanding of form is that Saamidd is a top class 2yo, a real top notcher.

Godolphin are certainly not incapable of getting a horse ready for the guineas - they did it before - was it Mark of Esteem?

I would admit their more recent record at the start of the flat has not been particularly awesome though.

If Saamidd was trained by a top trainer in Ireland or here it would be quite a lot shorter though imo. he was just stunning at Doncaster.
Report Figgis • September 21, 2010 8:51 PM BST
One negative about his last run was the time was quite a poor one. Yes I know that doesn't mean he's a slow horse and he appeared to do it very easily but I'd like to see him compete in a faster run race. His debut time was quite a decent one so there's plenty of hope he could handle it but not all Godolphin 2yos improve much from their first run to their second.
Report mythical prince • September 23, 2010 2:58 PM BST

Saamidd, winner of the Group Two Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on September 11, will gallop before racing at Newmarket on Thursday.

The Godolphin two-year-old, who is unbeaten in two outings, will exercise over seven furlongs on the Rowley Mile at 12.50pm and is due to be in the pre-parade ring at 12.30pm. He will be accompanied by two galloping companions.

The Street Cry colt has always had a big reputation and is likely to run in either the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket or the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster next.

He is the 9-1 second-favourite behind Frankel for next year's 2000 Guineas.
