Brilliant post. Where did you get a price for the 1000?

It's ok found her on here. No money waiting to be backed though.
By:
re: prices, you'll need to ring around and ask for prices, as firms have not included her in their published lists - several firms were only offering 20s yesterday

Thanks. I'll probably wait for a while then. Do you think she'll come over here next year or stay at home for the french guineas. She could trade bigger in the winter if she's rumoured to go stay at home a la natagora.

Hi jamesp. She looked very speedy yesterday, quickly away and always up with pace. She looked more of a sprinter than miler to my eyes, although I take your point regarding her breeding.

Nice one James, I think she won really well and looks to have a good chance of progressing. She was quite free in the Papin and will need to learn to settle more when tried over longer trips. The form of the Papin looks really good and she must be the leading juvenile in France beating Dolled Up and Siyouni. What I like about her pedigree is it's all quick ground milers, Hennessy gets fast ground horses and the grand dam Viviana looked best on fast ground, she won on soft but the form of that race looks suspect to me. She has produced firm/fast ground horses in Sightseek and Tates Creek that have won at the highest level. Special Duty's action also appears to be suited to quick ground and if the Guineas was run next year under similar conditions to this year she'd have to go close. I wonder if they'll consider one of the Breeders Cup races for her this year?
By:
Nice to see Mata Keranjang run so well in the Vintage Stakes today - he had finished third to Sorciere and Special Duty on debut and is clearly a smart colt. A good boost for the Yacowlef form.
By:
Ben, I agree that Special Duty will need to settle better. I hadn't looked right back to Viviana in the pedigree, but I agree that she was probably best on good or faster ground (although she did also manage to win a Listed race on soft, as you rightly point out). Special Duty should be fine on anything except really soft ground. I hope they don't send her to America for the Breeders Cup, as that might signal an intention to transfer her to one of Khalid Abdullah's trainers over there - but surely they wouldn't do that to Criquette?! Special Duty has so much speed that I suspect they will keep her to 6f this year, so after the Prix Morny the Cheveley Park Stakes may be on the agenda.
By:
Corporal Maddox also ran well and could have finsihed closer in the Vintage with a clear run, he was 3rd to Dolled Up who was 3rd to Special Duty, so it's all tying in nicely.
By:
It has to be conceded, though, that Canford Cliffs looks a class apart at present. If he can reproduce his Coventry Stakes form (boosted today by the Vintage Stakes win of Xtension) he will be very hard to beat in the Prix Morny. I'll be delighted if Special Duty can finish runner-up to him.
By:
She'll do well to finish ahead of Arcano, let alone Canford Cliffs imo.
By:
whats her foaling date?
By:
Racing Post Ratings (RPR) are usually a pretty accurate guide to past performances. They put Arcano on 111 and Special Duty on 109, each after just two starts. With the 1.5kg (3.3lbs) sex allowance they're quite evenly matched on those ratings. Canford Cliffs (119), however, is well clear of both.
Foaling dates are important to some contributers to this forum, as we know, and of little or no importance to others (I fall into the latter category). Special Duty was foaled on 12 February (which makes her an Aquarius, if I'm not mistaken). |

We're down to just five possible runners for Sunday's Group 3 Prix de Cabourg at Deauville (a traditional warm-up for the Prix Morny), but they include Special Duty's conqueror Sorciere and also Wonderfilly, who finished 5th in the Prix Robert Papin. Full list:
1 ZANZIBARI (A. FABRE) 2 BOLTCITY (JC. ROUGET) 3 LIXIROVA (D. SMAGA) 4 WONDERFILLY (P. DEMERCASTEL) 5 SORCIERE (C. LERNER) Rouget's colt Boltcity beat Zanzibari by a head in the Prix Irish River over course and distance last time, form which was boosted when the third Head Of Steam came out and won at Chantilly this week by six lengths. But this looks a good opportunity for Sorciere. |
By:
Lucky Like runs in tomorrows Richmond Stakes, he was not beaten far by Special Duty, yet he is available at 70-1. Although he does have a bad draw.
By:
Lucky Like was slightly disappointing last time in a Chantilly maiden, just losing out in a photo finish. Looks up against it in the Richmond Stakes and would be better off in maiden company, but they obviously think quite a bit of him.
By:
Sorciere finished 2nd in the Cabourg, beaten by Zanzibari.

Unfortunately I didn't see the Prix de Cabourg (what happened to ATR's coverage?!), but it sounds as though Sorciere was travelling well with a furlong to run before her stride shortened inside the final furlong, which suggests to me that she didn't quite get home over the extra furlong today. But what do I know - the RP report suggests that the trainer may look at the Prix du Calvados over 7f for Sorciere's next race. The winner seems to be a smart colt, so it was probably no disgrace to finish second to him. Wonderfilly finished a couple of lengths closer to the winner than she had in the Prix Robert Papin (behind Special Duty). I'm confident that Special Duty would reverse form with Sorciere if they ever meet again.

have been watching some of these horses with interest since you highlighted them, jamesp.
But don't think any of them, including Siyouni, Sorciere etc , are within 6-7 lengths of Canford Cliffs .... and 3-4 lengths of Arcano |
By:
I'd agree that Canford Cliffs, on his Coventry Stakes form, is several lengths ahead of anything else over 6 furlongs. However I'd dispute whether Arcano is clear second best. In the absence of official ratings for these horses, the Racing Post Ratings are as good a guide as anything else to the respective merits of these horses (in terms of what they have actually achieved on the racecourse, leaving aside speed ratings etc). After the sex allowance is taken into account, the filly Special Duty comes out just ahead of Arcano, with Siyouni (runner-up to Special Duty in the Prix Robert Papin) 4lbs below Arcano (which equates to just over a length). I'm very hopeful that with further improvement to come Special Duty can finish ahead of Arcano in the Prix Morny and prove that she's a genuine classic contender for next season.

James,
Nick Mordin is also a fan of this horse: SPECIAL DUTY had run second in fast time to the smart Sorciere in the Listed Prix Yacowlef at Deauville on her racecourse debut. She apparently got knocked coming out of the stalls in that race and trainer Criquette Head feels she would have won but for that. This certainly seems credible following Special Duty's win in fast time in the Prix Robert Papin. I had thought that the Italian raider Orpen Shadow would outpace everything in the big race as he'd showed tremendous pace to win the Group 3 Premio Primi Passi on his latest start, which was his fourth win in four outings. But Special Duty ranged alongside him right from the start and forced him to go a step faster than he found comfortable. The result was that the Italian horse tired late into fourth while Special Duty kept moving well all the way to the line to win in fast time. This was a Group 1 class performance from Special Duty and marks her out as an even more serious threat to Canford Cliffs than Sorciere in the upcoming Prix Morny. Indeed I'm now wondering whether Canford Cliffs will have the pace to go with Special Duty in the Morny over six furlongs having seen what she did to Orpen Shadow here. In the longer term I now have my eye on Special Duty as a live candidate for the 1000 Guineas. Her sire stayed beyond a mile and gets plenty of horses which do the same. And her dam is a half sister to two US Grade 1 winners over nine furlongs. Special Duty is a decent size for a two year old filly and I can very well see her staying a mile later on. The big clue about whether she'll go to Newmarket for the Guineas will be if she takes up her entry in the Cheveley Park. Criquette Head, like Andre Fabre and other French trainers, believe that it's best to give a horse experience of Newmarket at two before tackling the Guineas. Two of Criquette Head's three 1000 Guineas winners won the Cheveley Parks Stakes at two. And three of the last four French-trained winners of the Cheveley Park went on to win the fillies' Classic. Give her physique, pedigree and the form she showed here together with the record of her trainer, it's surprising the bookies haven't marked up Special Duty for the 1000 Guineas. I'd be very tempted by 25-1 or more at this stage. |

Leo, thanks for posting Nick Mordin's comments (which I hadn't seen). Clearly Nick has been reading this thread! ;)

Well, Special Duty couldn't quite repel Arcano, who's clearly a very smart colt, but she still ran a great race in the Prix Morny today. She has clearly improved another few pounds from her Papin win (as the trainer expected) and is now rated just 4lbs below Arcano, which probably makes her the best juvenile filly we've seen so far this season (just ahead of Jealous Again). She still showed a few signs of greenness and was a bit too keen for my liking, but even allowing for that I thought Badblokes quote of 33/1 for the 1000 Guineas straight after the race was amazing value (WH offer 12s, VC 16s). Clearly they think she won't stay a mile, but she wasn't stopping at the end of 6 furlongs today and on breeding should get the mile OK. I hope that her dismissive Guineas price will have to be radically revised after the Cheveley Park Stakes (her next intended race). Usually whenever Criquette brings a filly over the Cheveley Park, it's as a prep for the 1000 Guineas.

Dismayed to hear Lord Grimthorpe say on 'Get On' (on ATR) this morning that Special Duty could even be aimed at the Abbaye over 5f as an alternative to the Cheveley Park Stakes. Obviously if she runs in the Abbaye she has no chance of being aimed at the 1000 Guineas. If she runs in the Cheveley Park at least it will give them a chance to try different tactics and see whether she can be ridden with a touch more restraint (provided she agrees to settle). If she's ridden from just off the pace in the Cheveley Park and comes through to win decisively they must surely think about bringing her back next year in the Prix Imprudence over 7f as a possible prep for the Guineas.
By:
If she runs in the Abbaye you'll be able to win you Guineas money back :)
Think that race would be ideal for her the way she ran in the Morny. |
By:
Did Grimthorpe mention if the ground might be important to her, out of interest?
By:
No mention was made of her ground preferences. But the way she ran in the Morny it's clear she acts well on fast ground (like most of her family).
By:
Yes I just wondered if that would influence their decision.
By:
I doubt if she'd want soft ground, so with the Cheveley Park and Abbaye only two days apart I guess they'll keep their options open until they have to make the declaration. My money's on the Cheveley Park, provided the ground is good or faster - it's their best chance of winning a Group 1 with her this year. Main dangers will be Jealous Again (if she gets the extra furlong) and Lady Of The Desert.
By:
It might be costly but I could not back Jealous Again, think she was ridiculously forward and has had her big day. Others will at the very least have caught her up and like you say there's doubts about the extra furlong.

Some good news for you James, looks like she'll be heading to Newmarket.
Special Duty on course for Cheveley Park Stakes By Desmond Stoneham12.25PM 17 SEP 2009 FRANCE: Criquette Head-Maarek will bid to win her fourth Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket on October 2 with Special Duty. The trainer has already taken the Group 1 event with Ma Biche (1982) and Ravinella (1988), who both went on to win the 1,000 Guineas the following year. Her most recent winner of the race was Pas De Reponse in 1996. Special Duty landed the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin and was then narrowly beaten by Arcano in the Darley Prix Morny after bravely trying to make all the running. Head-Maarek said: "The Cheveley Park is the target and the filly is very well. She pleased in her work on Wednesday with Stephane Pasquier in the saddle." |

Good news indeed. They'd have been mad to go for the Abbaye.

Great shout Jamesp with Special Duty a number of months ago - fair play your posts have been very informative (especially though not exclusively about aspects of French form). With the Fillies Mile shout as well you've got this years 2 year old fillies down to a tea!
