After the pre race comments you wouldn't be too concerned with the run today (I am not on antepost) as she was expected to need the run and the ground would have been softer than ideal, but there now must be a concern with her staying the mile at Newmarket. I would expect her to be there on 1000 GNS day.

i hate replying to threads like Duncans, it was a trial for a race in a months time, it proved it's wellbeing, and the trainer is one of the best at getting them right on the big day. cheers.

AP backers must have been dissapointed with that run, surely.Never
looked like winning. |

as somebody mentioned earlier, Zafonic got beat in its' trial. cheers.

Criquette has won the Imprudence 10 times. If she says a horse will come on from the race it should be interpreted as "we're hoping for a miracle in the next 4 weeks". The damage is done.
It's always nice to see Prix Marcel Boussac form boosted though. |

I thought I would have my input ben because many of the posts made today seem to be wilfully ignoring what everyone witnessed.

Hatoof? Or do we ignore that fact?
She hasn't had a winner this season, don't see how it's surprising being beaten a length by a horse whose trainer gets them ready and makes his name plundering early season prizes and a horse that had already had a run this season. |

I'm sure you're going to ignore anything that doesn't suit you. |

I don't ignore anything pal, I've already made my Special Duty stake back thanks to Joanna so I in effect have a bet to nothing anyway.

Agree with that, in general it's wise to ignore anything Grimthorpe says. |

Special Duty's trainer Criquette Head-Maarek has won the Imprudence ten times, including with subsequent Guineas winners Ma Bicheand Ravinella - but she saddled Hatoof to win at Newmarket after a trial defeat.
"She needed the race which will bring her on," said the trainer. "The filly ran well and the ground was not in her favour." |

, havent seen the race, and yes i have 7/2 on special duty dont think shell run now at newmarket

Here's all the quotes including jockeys about the winner.
THE participation of ante-post favourite Special Duty in the StanJames.com 1,000 Guineas is in jeopardy after she was beaten into third place behind Joanna (Jean-Claude Rouget/Christophe Soumillon) in the Prix Imprudence on Thursday. A best-priced 5-2 favourite for the Newmarket Classic before the Group 3 trial, the Cheveley Park Stakes winner is now as big as 5-1 with the sponsors for the Newmarket Classic, although she remains favourite all round. Hamdan Al Maktoum's Joanna, a best-priced 16-1 for the Guineas, is likely to bypass the race to stay at home for the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches. Running over 7f for the first time and facing testing conditions underfoot, Special Duty was a market drifter before the Imprudence, going off just about an odds-on chance. The daughter of Hennessy disputed the lead under Stephane Pasquier before being asked to claim the race a couple of furlongs out. However, she had been tracked by ex-Italian-trained Joanna throughout and had few answers when the 13-5 second favourite was brought upsides to challenge inside the final furlong. Joanna went on to score by a half-length over Evading Tempete, who finished well on the rail to take second place another half-length ahead of Special Duty. Looking ahead to the 1,000 Guineas, Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for Special Duty's owner Khalid Abdullah, said: "There is no decision on whether or not Special Duty will go to Newmarket for the 1,000 Guineas for the moment. "We are very aware of the betting market and we will do the best for the filly after taking everything into account. The final decision is up to Prince Khalid. "She needed the race and blew a lot afterwards," Grimthorpe added. |

If all the Special Duty fans thought that was ok today I would have thought they would all be smashing into the 5/1 on offer now.The horse will be unsuited by the mile imo in the Guineas and physically I can't have her at all.The better ground will no doubt suit at HQ but I just don't think that she's anything out of the ordinary.

Given all the talk on here, I am surprised you all aren't retired off laying the odds on today

TMB, I don't agree with you about Special Duty's physique. She is certainly not a small filly, she's a medium-sized filly with plenty of scope for development. She's still a bit light-framed but has filled out over the winter. She was champion juvenile filly last year, she's bred to get the mile without any problems and is still the one they all have to beat in the Guineas. She was nowhere near fully fit today and blew heavily afterwards. She didn't get home in the soft ground today because she patently needed the race. Even so, it was a good performance - the winner is a smart filly in her own right (third in last year's Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac) and was almost certainly much fitter than Special Duty. In three weeks time she will be a different filly. I'm not interested in backing her at 5/1 because a) I have already backed her heavily at 50s and 33s, and b) the firm offering 5/1 would probably restrict me to about £25 or something ridiculous.

I take all your points on board James and I'll be at HQ for the classic weekend. All the best with your fancy ante post vouchers on the filly but I beg to disagree with your view in regards the horses confirmation and the fact that I thought she curled up when the other horses went by her today.Yes she might have needed the race and you have to hold on to that hope if you give her a favourites chance in the 1000G.According to the trainers comments she was not going to blame the ground for the horse's defeat as good horses go on any ground.I would be seriously laying off now and taking profit as I cannot see her lasting the mile in the big one.If I see some guy with wads of cash in his hands screaming like a banshee after the race I'll know it's you.Best of luck either way.

jamesp..were you at Maisons Laffite today?
If not how do you know that SD has filled out? |

My guess at the Racing Post Ratings for the Prix Imprudence:
109 Joanna (a couple of pounds higher than her Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac effort) 108 Evading Tempete (up 13lbs on her easy win in a Listed race at Deauville last time) 107 Special Duty (10lbs below her Gr.1 Cheveley Park win) 95 Wonderfilly (similar to several of her performances last year) 93 Ascot Glory (11lbs below her Gr.2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte form) 89 Lixirova (a stone below her Gr.3 Prix Miesque win) 83 Saying (a stone below her Listed win at the end of last season) At her best (in the Cheveley Park Stakes), Special Duty has already achieved a RPR of 117, which is good enough to win an average Guineas (four of the last five winning performances in the 1000 Guineas have earned ratings of 113, 114, 115 and 115). I see no reason why she shouldn't improve by 10lbs between now and Guineas day. The only other fillies to have already achieved a rating good enough to win an average Guineas are Jealous Again (the Queen Mary winner who will surely not run in the Guineas) and Rosanara (the Prix Marcel Boussac winner who is going for the French Guineas). |
|
By:
I believe the fillies of last year were not that great and on that score she may not have to be that brilliant to win the 1000G this year,so I take your point.

By:
With regard to Special Duty having 'filled out', I'm simply quoting Criquette's own words when she gave an update on the filly a week or two ago. As to whether she will get a mile, the filly has already been working over about a mile at home and the trainer does not have significant concerns about the Guineas trip. But you never know for sure until they actually race over the trip. You can't take today's race as evidence that she won't get a mile, as she clearly 'blew up' in the final furlong due to lack of peak fitness. She's a much better filly on quicker ground. I'm still bullish about the Guineas, my main worry would be soft ground.

Hatoof was beaten a nose. I'm sure you're going to ignore anything that doesn't suit you. Correct me if i'm wrong, hatoof wasn't a pattern race winner before winning the guineas ? |

re: Hatoof. Hatoof was a top two-year-old, she was only beaten a short head in the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac.

Just saw it on ATR finall. Shaken up, no repsonse (that's uncharcteristic), hit once, and when Joanna pulled along side he basically gave up when he could have got second. Still plenty to cling to, I think the key is that she didn't find anything when asked which is not what we've seen from her before so I'm still happy with my position.

Did not look ready in her coat, needs time and some sun on her back.

I don't want to put my foot in it, because i'm bang off form. However, i don't see any problem with her run today. Her real work starts in the next few weeks as her preparation will heat up. The going is a major issue for many horses, as is fitness obviously. Today was nothing more than a training session, and i was happy to see the 5/1 go up. Last year Goldikova never done much first time out on ground that didn't suit, and the rest is history.

Think she was a non trier today then graeme.I'm sure her backers would be pleased about that.
