@horationelson...no it was not me who backed a golfer at 1.01!! Not my game that.
In the early days of Betfair I used to lay 1.03 for five ort six horses in big fields sprints hoping to be matched on at least two of them! Worked for a while but then, as with all on here, many others started the same thing. But no, never backed at 1.01 in anything. |

Re-reading this thread....surely there is no dispute that Scur. Champ was the most eye catching runner of all time?
I truly believe he was taking the p*ss sometimes! Miles behind and then roared through - and then one night, cannot recall where, a huge crowd turned up to see him and he bolted out of the traps and led all the way!!! |

@ The Knight.....My apologies...I have must have previous usernames mixed up

Then the other, rarely mentioned, night when he,……..stopped chasing.

Yes, against Ballyregan Bob (and was it two others, or just a match?) at Wembley in a 12k to the winner one-off race sponsored by John Power.
Scu. Champ was surely close to human! Saw BB fly off that night and though 'S*d this, no chance of catching him so what's the point!!!' BTW. I think it was at Oxford when SC flew out of the boxes to lead all the way... |

There was 4 runners in the race. Glenowen Queen & Track Man were the other 2 both very useful in their own right.

@ Horatio Nelson
I think that was the user 'Knight Commander' on here? I vaguely remember it. I also could be wrong though, but that rings a bell |

Mick the Miller remains the only dog the general public can name.

I was there for the John power Showdown , I'm convinced THE champ seen Bob on parade ,and thought fook that for a game of Soldiers ..
Big call Dan , was a Hero to the British Public back in the day , I seen him in the Flesh , sadly Dead in the natural History Musuem , Not sure where he is now .. Can you Imagine a Super Greyhound being put on display in a museum these days I will Add HOLDEM SPY , Never a GOAT , But he was the peoples Champ for a Couple of years , We need dogs that have a Following We have one at the Moment Mongys Wild dog looks Unbeatable over 700 Meters plus , Mr wallis says was sickness in the Kennel hope he comes back OK , Was looking forward to him in the Dorando tonight , he is a very very special Dog Anyone know what the Mark Wallis group paid for him ?cant believe Mr Holland would have let him Go cheap ....... its early Days but well placed he could run up a sequence , Who or what beats Him ? |
|
By:
Think the reasoning to sell was the lack of long distance races in Ireland, he was indeed a bargain if the amount I heard was correct £15k.
|
|
By:
The question of GOAT is, obviously, subjective and everyone will have their personal opinions.
Bob was unbeatable over a ‘proper’ six bends - nothing rarely, if ever, got even close to him over that trip. However, I was at Walthamstow when he ran down Ballintubber One over 475m. I honestly believe that he could’ve won a Derby, Leger AND TV Trophy. He was the most majestic greyhound in full flow and I feel privileged to have been a regular race goer when he and Scurlogue were around. Whilst I fully appreciate ‘The Champ’s’ enigmatic running style understandably drew the crowds (and I too followed him), he wasn’t, in my humble opinion in the same league as Ballyregan Bob - who was as close as I’ve ever seen to the perfect racing greyhound. |
|
By:
I agree and it was only the closure of White City which convinced conns. not to run him at Wimbledon, who took it over They considered the track unsuitable for him apparently.

The "best ever" question is almost impossible to answer.
Across any sport, across any era it is impossible to have a concrete answer because there are always far too many imponderables. Pele? Maradonna? Ronaldo? Messi? Federer? Nadal? Djokovic? Woods? Nicholas? Bradman? Tendulkar? Lara? Anderson? Root? Kholi? It's the impossible question that cannot be answered in my opinion |
|
By:
Some great names there Horatio - but none of them would’ve got close to Bob over 655m at Wembley!

Mick the Miller's stuffed body used to be on display at the Natural Histoery Museum in Kensington, but then he was moved to their smaller premises at Tring in Hertfordshire. Hopefully he is still there but a search of their Tring site shows no results. I fear 'wokeness' may have led to him being removed from public display.
Aladdin, yes, I, too, was at Wal'stow when BR beat Ballintubber One over the 475m. A video of that race is on YouTube. BR was the most majestic greyhound I have ever seen and the way he powered past the very fast B'Tubber One at the Stow that night was awe inspiring. Second until just after the last bend, he then lengthens into full stride and the deal was done. Lastly, just been reading a book about the sporting summer in England of 1934. An Englishman won Wimbledon (Fred Perry) and also the Open Golf (Henry Cotton). The book also looks at how England played against the Aussies at cricket that summer. But what amazed me was just how prolific Don Bradman was as a batsman. His figures and performance defied belief and, to my mind, puts him top of any list of batsman. |

BALLINISKA BAND - 1977 Derby winner at White City. Equalled the track record in the final and one of the few dogs to go through the competition unbeaten.

Premier Fantasy very fast dog. I'd love a 3 dog betting trial with him westmead hawk and ballyregan bob in Dublin, they wouldn't see were he went.

Hawk wasn’t just as brilliant at SPk as he was over here, imo. He’d still take a hell of a beating though.
|
|
By:
yes the hawk didn't run shelbourne as well as anticipated, regardless premier fantasy was far superior hound to Mineola farloe and droopys maldini, very fast dogs no doubts, but premier fantasy was class above

It is no big deal other people might have different opinions but I think PF was best dog I watched, although I loved college causeway, probably because I won fortunes off him.

“Here comes the Causeway”!

Yep and he had a very good tool to pull in and primed to go and well trained, magnificent performance but i don't think he would have came and done pf, no chance.

By:
absolutely gobsmacked that no mention of toms the best not saying he is the greatest but only hound to win english and irish derby my personal call is ballyregan bob the dog was unreal
|
|
By:
Very very good hound alright Tom's the best, I had wee pup out him as sire, not great, but not bad definitely, had his traits in genuine and running power late, however larkhill jo put him in his place in Glasgow, same trainer I think.

Hope your Keeping Well Rory , Long time mate , are you still going to the Derby ? We never missed a Derby meet at the Don
Another Great Bitch Dolores Rocket won the Spring Cup over 700 yards at Wimbledon Stadium, set a track record at Crayford & Bexleyheath Stadium before victory in the Wembley Spring Cup.[3] After seasonal rest she headed for the 1971 English Greyhound Derby and won the competition and became the first bitch to win the Derby since 1949. After the Derby she broke the track record at Romford Greyhound Stadium when winning the Essex Vase on 6 July and broke the 700 yard track record at Wimbledon on 26 July. Later in 1971 she also won the St Leger at Wembley and reached the Cesarewitch final at West Ham Stadium. She earned £15,044 in career prize money which constituted a new record. |
