2011 Sprinter of the Year and reigning champion Drumcove Lad Love will carry many hopes in an exciting renewal of the old Classic dating back to 1928. Only a Category Two competition nowadays but the cream of the country's sprinters are going for it.

Not too far behind, Drumcove is Fernhill Jess and Dynamo Joe, imo. I would also watch out for Skate On, Glanmire Phanter, Jumeirah Dubai and Big Local. Think Slick Sian and Lissom Jack may have a little bit to prove.

Will be interesting to see how the antepost market shapes up

Belle Vue will suit Little Reminder.
Report 3132 October 2, 2012 7:15 PM BST
Fernhill Jess comes into the event in good form & Lister's Glanmire Phanter trialled well.

Drumcove if staying fit won't be far off...but he's had his share of injuries this year.

Best odds, so far

5 Drumcove
5 Jess
7 Dynamo
8 Phanter
10 Ice
16 Dubai
16 Reminder
16 Sian
20 Local
20 Lissom
25 Skate (over-priced, imo).

Also, newcomer Drumna Ice could be interesting but dont know anything about it? The fact Lister's thrown it in at the deep end, though, says something
Report 3132 October 2, 2012 7:38 PM BST
Lister's dog has real raw pace...his 1st look trial was very nice and he seems to be trapping with more consistency which was his issue.

Just good to see the event being staged in the current climate.
Report woodmanchester October 3, 2012 8:12 AM BST
Having one of my "proper" bets on Drumcove. Already gone in for some 5/1 and keeping some powder dry in case anyone dares go bigger, before i go in again. I would have rated it about a 3/1 shot, country's top sprinter, imo.

Small nibbles 16/1 Jumeirah and 25/1 Skate On
Report miss.wales October 3, 2012 8:29 AM BST
5/1 in a 36 dog sprint comp is absolutely no value IMO, particularly about a dog who was thought unlikely to run again a few months ago.

Don't get me wrong, the Allsopp team have done a great job with him and the owners are proper dog men, but it's asking a lot to defend this title at the favourite's graveyard that is Belle Vue.

Nonetheless it will be brilliant if he achieves it.

skate on for me too 25/1

Sound as a bell as far as i can see at Nottingham, in fact flying. Has course knowledge advantage over main threat Fernhill Jess. Reigning champion and holds Dynamo Joe on last year's form. With respect, honestly dont know what you want Miss Wales?
Report miss.wales October 3, 2012 12:01 PM BST
5/1 equates to being 1/2 to qualify in his heat, evens to qualify in his semi-final, and evens to win in the final.

Bear in mind that the semi-final will be first 2 only and this is a sprint, which makes it heavily dependent on the break, I couldn't possibly consider that to be value.

As a matter of interest I seem to remember Chris Lund's Hurry Back being really short for this comp last year but finishing last in the final.

Report woodmanchester October 3, 2012 1:20 PM BST
Whats QED please? Youre welcome to your opinion Miss Wales but he has won 8 of his last 11 races and i'd rather have 5/1 now, rather than evens in the final thanks. Make no mistake, he an exceptional sprinter, a flying machine. Incidentally, think Hurry Back would have won last year but for running into bad trouble on the crest of the bend, even though he missed the kick. Besides Jess is fav in some books
Report IanP October 3, 2012 2:48 PM BST
What do you mean he was sound as a bell at Nottingham woody ?  He was withdrawn from the final lame, wasn't he ?
Report miss.wales October 3, 2012 3:27 PM BST
Woody

QED is an abbreviation of Quad Erat Demonstrandum, which literally translated from the Latin means That which was to be proved.

Effectively I was saying that Hurry Back's defeat in the final proves my point that these things happen in dog racing, in sprints, at Belle Vue etc.

Good luck with your bet in any event - I love to see good dogs come back from serious injury and I'll be giving him a shout if he gets to the final.
Report woodmanchester October 3, 2012 4:04 PM BST
Thanks Miss Wales, you learn something new every day. The odds you quote for qualification are pretty much the same for the top 5 in the betting, yet one of them seems sure to win it. Out of curiosity, what price would Drumcove need to be to be value, please? Even though, value is a rare comodity and only in the mind of the backer.

Didnt know Ian but checked and youre right, although dont know the reason why withdrawn from final. Thought they were just one-off sprints. Very impressive in the heats anyway, but yes, injury could come into it. Dont think he was 100% when winning the National Sprint against the best around, too. My theory being thats why he eased wide off the second before coming again in his races. Extremely fast dogs are more prone to injury. Fingers crossed

Report wondersobright October 3, 2012 8:09 PM BST
There are too many doubts about the fitness of drumcove lad to be betting him ante-post at his price imo. No trial for fernhill jess Shocked and drumna ice/dynamo joe in possibly toughest heat together. Odds on coupled at 5/5/7/8, so not for me.

16s is an insult for jumeirah dubai, could not be better drawn or be in a weaker heat, and anything under 18 dead at notts is going some. 10/1 is too big about glanmire phanter also the way that won at yarmouth and 15.06 trial not bad for first look at BV.

Drumcove was withdrawn from Notts final due to a minor injury but would be back in a couple of weeks it said on C.Allsopp's blog at the time. Big ask to keep him sound for 3 races in quick timescale after length of time he's been out already.

notts has been running quick all throughout september

do your own research and come up with your own going allowance and see how far away it is from what they gave, its fairly close to the mark imo judged by the long term graded times

drumcove's 10 sept 17.92s (GA was +30, all 4-bend graded/opens +50 or +60)

where is this much quicker run please? Laugh I can see 17.85s in the heats (3 sept), national sprint final 18.11s, semi 17.94s, heat 18.08s, prep race 17.97s, trial 18.18s, and first look crowded 18.12s.

this should be good Wink

I was thinking his last two runs, 17.62 and 17.55. Obviously fast going though, agreed. Sure he still holds the clock at Vue anyway. He may be the only dog ever to dipped beneath 15secs, but i stand to be corrected about that

Main thing for me, Drumcove, Skate through and saver Dubai. If you had backed Drumcoce, you would have been out of pocket. Although he dead-heated, he half lost also apparently! Crazy. The judged called the photo print undicipherable and mustsnt have been as confident as the commentator to call it on evidence of watching them cross the line
Report woodmanchester October 5, 2012 8:43 AM BST
Phanter wasnt well away and looked set to struggle but seemed to be distracted halfway up the run-in by a parader, checked, virtually stopped and beaten a distance. The judge showed the green light, so that was that but i'd have been tempted to appeal for a void race on the grounds of outside interfence if i was Lister. Hard to see it was that quick but the paraders seemed to be loitering and possible something was waved to catch Phanter's eye?

On the night anyway, several fine performances. Plenty in with chances still

Peckham Spring was away and not for catching but when Drumcove Lad turned second, i thought, great, he's in the final. Not meant to be though, as he eased on the crest of the bend, others came rushing through and he was narrowly eliminated. Dynamo Joe second.

Dont ask me how he did it, but Skate On eased round in front of Ferndale Jess on the crest of the bend and won comfortbly. No 33/1 shot for the final now and such is my atrocious luck antepost, thinking of laying him off

Report wondersobright October 19, 2012 9:15 PM BST
yes, but it aint decided on how many races they've won, it's decided on what they've won

lil risky has absolutely no chance of being sprinter of the year on form so far
Report woodmanchester October 20, 2012 6:22 PM BST
Could possibly be some slight speculation though Wonder. Think Risky won Peterborough Derby over 420m, although Risky a sprinter really. If 400m Romford is deemed a sprint, 420m Peterborough could be too? Slightly grey area, imo
Report wondersobright October 20, 2012 9:02 PM BST
I know golden sprint is 4 bend competition but proper 2 bend comps usually decide the winner

peterborough derby cannot be included imo, there's got to be a cut off point somewhere, otherwise the TV trophy winner will up for it as well Laugh

Suppose youre right Wonder but 4 bend sprints at Romford and Crayford not too disimillar to Peterborough really. Only point i'm trying to make really, Scurry only Cat Two, so we could be in a position whatever wins National Sprint will possibly be Sprinter of the Year
Report cappo October 21, 2012 8:38 PM BST
Whatever wins , or is nominated , it should be remembered that it is the Sprinter of the YEAR award - not the sprinter of the last couple of months in the year.
There are some dogs which have been on the go since January, winning open sprints, and competitions each and every month whilst others may end up running in less than a dozen races and expect to be put forward for the award.

Incidentally, the same should apply to all categories I.e. Dog of the YEAR, Bitch of the YEAR etc.
Report woodmanchester October 21, 2012 10:41 PM BST
That's what i was saying, too, Cappo. "Bit late for Drumna Ice to be throwing his cap in the ring." All in good class, i guesstimate Jess won about 15 sprints and Risky about 10, not including 416m Monmore, 420m Peterborough and 450m Sunderland. I would put the pair in contention, although Wonder says Risky no chance
Report wondersobright October 22, 2012 10:47 AM BST
fernhill jess has won 13 sprint opens (2 bends), lil risky 8

I agree you need to consider all contenders across the year but it isn't like the sky 'top dog' competition where most wins count, its about what they've won

ok, scurry is a cat 2 but most of the cat 1 sprinter were in it, and DI hacked up in all 3 rounds, but let's see what notts in december brings before getting carried away
Report IanP October 22, 2012 12:33 PM BST
Drumcove Lad only had a couple of races (winning one) before winning Scurry and National Sprint last year, so there is a prescedent that the winner of the two end of year sprints to be named Sprinter of the Year.
Report cappo October 22, 2012 3:02 PM BST
You are correct Ian, Drumcove Lad only really raced in the last 4 -5 months of 2011 but in my opinion was a worthy winner of Sprinter of the Year as he convincingly beat the best sprinters around in the two top sprint competitions. If Drumsna Ice does the same he may well be a contender for Sprinter of the Year but there is also a good chance that he will be beaten by some of the other sprinters around at the moment.

The sprint division is wide open as there is no superstar such as Jimmy Lollie which is why I believe you need to assess the whole of 2012 and not just the last 3 months.

Incidentally, I believe the National Sprint is also a Cat 2 so there are actually no Cat 1 comps specifically for 2 bend sprinters so if, as has been suggested, "it's about what they've won not how often they've won" there is a "sprinter" who has actually won a Cat 1 comp this year . . . Lil Risky.

Will he win Sprinter of the Year - in my opinion, probably not
Is he the best "sprinter" around at the moment - in my opinion, probably yes
Report wondersobright October 22, 2012 9:46 PM BST
lil risky is the best sprinter around at the moment Laugh, how exactly?

pummeled by jumeirah dubai at brough, beaten at henlow on sky, previously beaten by fernhill jess at henlow and picked off by glanmire phanter at yarmouth

imo they have blunted the speed of the dog by tackling short 4 bend trips where, credit to the dog, its done well
Report cappo October 22, 2012 10:42 PM BST
Wondersobright - If you are able to understand punctuation marks and what they signify, then I would ask you to read my previous posts in their entireity and you will then hopefully understand why your last post does not merit a reasoned reply.

Incidentally, who do you mean by "they" have blunted the dog's speed?
Report woodmanchester October 23, 2012 7:01 AM BST
Personally think Drumna Ice is looking very good. If returning to best, only Drumcove Lad may lower his colours
Report wondersobright October 23, 2012 11:09 AM BST
cappo, please do not insult my intelligence, I understand completely the use of quotation marks

they is connections of the dog, it is my opinion that they blunted the speed of the dog by running it over 4 bends, I think the dog's record earlier in the year versus now backs that up - but it is only my opinion

I don't want to argue, in fact we are half agreeing anyway, the whole point of the discussion was to mull over who is going to be sprinter of the year, not who is going to be 'sprinter' of the year, I agree lil risky is an admirable dog mixing 2 bends/sharp 4 and nobody can take his victories away but he is practically the only top-class dog mixing the two, and the sprint part of the equation (what the award is judged on) is his weakest suit imo.
