Here's the breakdown.
Just 2 days to enter, not on TV, no prizes, not the biggest sporting event... but still 46 runners. So there's plenty of kudos to claim for winning the competition. Here's the breakdown and the FULL entry list. Section A) Molinari's 1st round: 1 person says 67, 2 say 74, everyone in between Section B) 1st round lead: Most players haven't been picked, Spieth and Fowler have though, 5 times each Section C) How many s's to make the cut: Streelman (late entry) doesn't count, it's just the 22 listed. anywhere between 6 and 14 will suit people, with an additional single prediction of 5,16,17 and 19. Section D) The cut mark: No-one really thinks this course is going to be a very tough test for golfers, consequently predictions for the cut run from -1 to +6. Could be a nil pointer, this section. Section E) Best R3 score: only about half the field are still in at this point, however they should be largely the half that are most likely to hit a low score. 1 pick of 63, everyone else 64 to 67 Section F) How many of the top(ish) 20 in the top 20 at the end of R3: Anywhere between 5 (1 person) and 13 will mean points for people. Section G) Top Asian: About a third of lists have Matsuyama to be the man. Section H) Top GB and I player: about a third plumped for McIlroy Section I) Top Continental European: There are quite a few with several picks, but also quite a few with none Section J) Top American: Fowler, D. Johnson and Spieth all well picked. Sundry others, barely picked, most unpicked. Section L) The winning margin: lots of predictions of Playoff and 1, 2, or 3 shots. 1 pick each for 4 and 5, nothing higher Section M) The winning score: A few picks or none all the way from 263 to 282. A spot of abject tiredness has rendered my updating of round 1 a thing of tomorrow morning.
At the time of writing the round 1 leader is Ricky Fowler. If I were a betting man I'd say he'll still be in the 1st 4 when everyone has finished the round. Mr Molinari isn't having the greatest start but then that's what he did last year and he still finished 2nd! Quite a few big names have had a poor start.
