The rules were applied.

the laws were indeed applied but they need to be urgently changed. joe bloggs sitting at home getting on the blower shouldn't be able to affect the result of a golf tournament.
for it to be completely fair you'd have to have cameras on ever golfer out there. clearly the leaders are the only ones who are going to be subject to this kind of "trial by video replay" so how can that possibly be fair? also she didn't profit from her error. the ball was in a slightly different position but no closer to the hole. kudos to her for recovering and nearly winning anyway. if it had been me, I would have walked off in disgust. as she said herself, "is this a joke?" |

why didnt her opponent in the play off just dunk one to let her win

Horrendous decision. Less than a year after the DJ incident no less. Gotta feel for Lexi, stuck around afterwards to sign autographs. How in the name of Zeus do you apply a penalty 24 hours later
![]() In a short span last year we had the DJ debacle then the Muirfield decision (thankfully amended, though the amendment doesn't generate the same news coverage) and now this. The people running the game are an enemy of it. |

The rules are quite frankly an utter joke, the fact they are looking to change so many says it all.....Even in doing that they need to have a big long winded nonsensical trial period, way too many people in Golf full of there own self importance, and i mean in every club in the land, obviously right to the top of the professional game! How can they possibly argue what they did last night was a fair representation of the rule break??
1.Why in the first place is it a two shot penalty? Not the basic one? 2.Why can they return to stuff a day later after scorecard accepted by themselves? 3.How can they think the policing of this rule is fair when the same scrutiny does NOT apply to all in field? 4.If they accept they were wrong in accepting the incorrect scorecard then why dont they offer the player the chance to accept the penalty a day later also, hence alleviating the other prehistoric 2 shot penalty. Now totalling four for moving your ball 2mm!On an 18 inch putt. 5.Anyone arguing this is correct and fair is im afraid one of those mentioned above who for a number of years have ensured the decline in enjoyment of playing and watching golf. 6.As punting men/women how can we possibly now bet confidently on outcomes when these goons can take it upon themselves to dock 4,yes 4 shots a day later, not on day when market settles but on the back nine of a sunday! I believe the girl was roughly 1.27 ish, out to double figures in the blink of an eye,no real oportunity to alter positions as clearly plenty on here had insider info before the amateur US Golf team decided to let us know. 7.If this was to have happened with six to play in Masters there would now be a requirement for backup servers on Betfair Forum and many many other platforms. This however was a professional major and i for one feel very very sorry for the girl who is young and good enough to recover but may never actually do so! |

I agree with nearly all of what you say.
Additionally, it is actually unclear even now whether they would retrospectively change the result of yesterday's competition today or tomorrow, or next week or next month, if they were to discover a rules breach from, say, Ryu's final round. Which is ludicrous. So the process is/was totally flawed, and the tv focus on the leaders makes for a biased review process. My one concern, is that having viewed the footage, I actually believe that her ball was in a small indentation, and she did replace it in a way that avoided having to putt out of it, which I believe is against the rules. Not sure if she did it deliberately - only she can know. The marking and replacing is totally fine and part of a golfer's routine, but she should not have gained an advantage. But golf relies on the honesty of its players and each action of this type cannot be reasonably monitored by an on course official. I noticed Lee Westwood and Oliver Wilson on twitter were both somewhat unsympathetic to her, which tells you something, I think. So for me the next steps for golf should urgently be: 1. Remind all players that golf relies on its players to be honest and self policing. 2. Change the rules so that once your marker has confirmed your score for a hole, that is it. No tv review or any other look back can make a change to your score. 3. Same thing applies to your round total - once agreed as correct by scorers at end of day, that is it. No changes can be made retrospectively. Further, it may possibly make sense to allow a clean and replace close by if a ball is a) in a fairway divot, or b) in pitchmark/indentation on a green. But I would defer to better golfers than myself on this last point! Westwood said it was no way comparable to the DJ incident. He was unwittingly correct. This was far, far worse.
Also, some - including professional golfers - are claiming she was moving the ball out of a small indentation in the green. There's no way you can tell that from the footage, that is totally unfair in my book. |

to me its clear that she didn't replace the ball correctly

sophies right, when I was basically playing full time amatuer golf when I was a student I met plenty of absolute bellends who loved themselves and wouldve been proud of phoning in and costing lexi this tournament

By:
As I mentioned earlier the exact same thing happened to Sergio Garcia at Quail Hollow a couple of years ago, a viewer called in to claim he'd replaced his ball in the wrong spot, the official tackled the golfer and after a long deliberation, decided to take no action. I recall a discusssion on Sky praising the officials for their common sense approach. Not much of that in evidence at Mission Hills last night though!

Im not sure why there is such a fuss here.
She clearly doesnt replace the ball properly. Its not like she marked it and then others putted out and she forgot how she had originally marked the ball. She clearly marks picks it up and realigns the ball then puts it down in a completely different spot all within 10-20 seconds. She can have no complaints about the 2 shot penalty for this it was a clear breach of the rules and her own fault. I have some sympathy with the second two shot penalty for signing for the wrong score. I think where it is clear the player signed for what they thought was correct score and then a subsequent infringement comes to light there should be no additional penalty incurred. As for the viewer ringing in - he wasn't wrong thompson broke the rules he apparently rang in on saturday so not sure why there was such a delay. It may seem harsh but if players can routinely move their ball a few cms on the green then they will to gain a small advantage. Only she knows why she did what she did but there is no doubt it was against the rules of golf |

the viewer emailed yesterday when lexi was on the 7th/8th hole, cant remember which

1st off, which one of u lowlife saddos grassed lexi up?
![]() just watched the vid of last round ,been reading some tweets would appear some are directly or indirectly 'accusing' her of knowing what she did vis-a-vis the ball relacement, avoiding an indent or smth i think that's extremely harsh she doesn't come across like that i had no money on the event but was choked up watching it and mega pulling for her think she showed great courage and class throuout tbf if u have to be pedantic apply the 1st pen but NOT the incorrect scorecard HTF can she have signed for an incorrect s/card when she or anyone else had any reason to think it was anything but kosher? has defo gone up uber exponentially imo and a fine tournament has been forever indelibly tarnished if there is to be trial by TV by disaffected Betfair punters and their ilk should only apply to the round in question if AT ALL and once that round is done and dusted no retrospective BS applies |

yeh as soon as the first tee shot is struck in following round/day they shouldnt be allowed to look back at sh it from the day(s) before

Really Mighty? Really? Kidding me aren't ya. You just can't take 4 shots off the leader in a major halfway through the final round for something that happened halfway through the third. A common sense statute of limitations deal should be applied. Before the round or not at all. And where are the rules officials anyway? Are they not watching their own broadcast? Ludicrous management, even if the penalty was technically there. Still can't get my head around it. |

I have to agree with mighty whites. Ok they penalties are harsh but that's a different issue. The issue is she clearly **** up , how hard is it to mark your ball and put it back down in the same spot seconds later. It's as clear as day that she placed it elsewhere and although there are sad bellend's in the world ringing up to grass , the officials had no choice , she broke the rules clearly.
When do you decide whether the rule should be enforced?? When she marks it a foot away , two feet away?? She didn't place the ball back where it should have went , rule broken |
|
By:
I agree she broke the rules, I have a massive problem tho with being able to wait almost 24 hours before reporting it and being a vindictive **** when it looks a certainty lexi will win the tournament, also the punishment doesnt fit the crime, 1-2 shots ok fair enough, 4 shots, GTFO
|
|
By:
Agree with MW. She marks to the side of the ball, and replaces virtually immediately in front of the marker and in a clearly different spot, not just a few millimetres away (otherwise I doubt anyone would have noticed). Strange thing to do by accident, strange thing to do on purpose for just a tap in.
Rules officials said they were only informed on the 7th hole but it seems likely that the viewer emailed the day before and it was only picked up the following day (public email address that probably gets loads of guff) |
|
By:
Rhino ive some sympathy for the 2 shots for signing for the wrong score card when she signed in good faith but the marking of the ball was blatently breaking the rules. She marked realigned and put it down no where near the original spot all in ten seconds its not like she marked and waited.
The question of when is the cut off point for rule infractions is one open to opinion but in this case the committee will have followed the rule. Personally I don't have a problem with the time scale of things. There seems a grey area between when the rules infraction was reported (apparently on the lpga fan feedback site) and when the committee picked up on it but ultimately she broke the rules. If she had replaced her ball properly then there wouldn't have been a problem. |
|
By:
yeh but the problem with being able to report something a day later is a players gameplan has been totally affected, how is that fair? say for example lexi neverfound out about this until the 18th tee and she had been playing for pars the last 5/6 holes protecting her lead, how is it then right to tell her shes in factlosing the tournment and needs birdies
|
|
By:
But Mighty, the committee did not follow the rule. A viewer did. The committee apparently don't even watch. The idea of a sporting body relying on viewers for adjudication is ridiculous, then to state we didn't get to the e-mail until the 7th hole... FFS. If they read the e-mail AFTER Lexi putts out on 18 and they are presenting the trophy, what then?
|
|
By:
Lexi wouldn't have that problem Grant if she marked her ball correctly which is one of the most common rules in golf

I think if the trophy had been presented the result would have stood as with locke at the open.
The lpga don't seem to have been on the ball as ive read that the viewer reported during 3rd round coverage. A similar thing happened with tiger when he hit the flag and rebounded into the water at the masters then someone questioned his subsequent drop and he was retrospectively punished after signing his card so there is president with the ruling. It was her fault she didn't mark the ball properly and can't complain that it was spotted. The two shot additional penalty should be reviewed and scrapped going forward in the case of someone signing their card in good faith. |

When do you decide whether the rule should be enforced?? When she marks it a foot away , two feet away?? She didn't place the ball back where it should have went , rule broken Key question alright. Though we're talking an inch at most here, not feet obviously. They could have overlooked it if they wanted, it wasn't cut and dried that they had to issue a penalty, which is why they obviously took their time adjudicating it. And as I already stated, there is a precendent on the PGA Tour when Garcia accepted he misplaced his ball at Quail Hollow a couple of years ago and they still let him off. |

so ur ok for in future tournaments a viewer notices something in R1 and waits until said player is on the 72nd tee with a 1 shot lead and then reports it???
what would be your opinion on the above if they had used the old leather wedge to improve their lie, deliberately improved their lie by moving something from behind the ball or dropped a ball down their trouser leg when looking for a lost ball? Dont forget we had the issue with dj at the PGA grounding his club in the sand area on the 72nd hole. That wasn't spotted by his playing partners, referee, caddy or himself but rather by the television footage. Granted he hadn't signed his card but he was informed in the scores tent after he had holed out. |
|
By:
I remember Tiger's like it was yesterday Mighty. If that incident didn't happen I think we Aussies are still chasing our first green jacket. The difference there was, is not a shot was played by anyone before the ruling was made and his score was altered. That is a pretty significant difference in my opinion.

There is no way the offence justifies the penalty in this case; we know it won't happen but she should be at least joint winner in any form of equality - things like this will kill TV coverage of golf vis a vis the popularity of the sport itself

When she replaced the ball it wasn't even close to the original place. It looked like she just picked it up and moved it an inch closer to her (not the hole).
While I have sympathy for her, it wasn't like she picked the ball up, cleaned it then put the ball back in error, she just put the marker down, picked the ball up and moved it towards herself by an inch. All very odd really. |
